2005 Triumph Speed Triple Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Triumph Speed Triple, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I HAVE OWNED A 2005 TRIUMPH SPEED TRIPLE MOTORCYCLE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW. THE FRONT BRAKES HAVE A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WHICH CLEARLY IS "A PROBLEM." OVER FAIRLY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME THE BRAKES BECOME PROGRESSIVELY MUSHY. THIS IS NOT NORMAL BY ANY MEANS IN THIS TIME PERIOD. THE BRAKES DO NOT CONSISTENTLY STOP AT THE SAME POINT WHEN PULLING IN THE LEVER AND CONTINUE TO GET WORSE UNTIL A TEMP FIX IS DONE AND THE PROCESS STARTS OVER. CURRENTLY TRIUMPH IS DECLINING TO EVEN DO THE TEMP FIX FOR ME WHILE MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD IT DONE! TRIUMPH CALLS THIS "PROGRESSIVE FEEL." THIS IS NOT A FEATURE. IT IS A PROBLEM. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE INCONSISTENCY IN NEAR CRASHES WHEN I HAD TO PULL THE LEVER FARTHER THAN I EXPECTED TO BRAKE, ONLY TO STOP WITHIN A FOOT OF A VEHICLE WHO TURNED IN FRONT OF ME. IT IS DANGEROUS AND SCARY. IF SOMEONE HAS NOT DIED YET BECAUSE OF IT, THEY WILL. PEOPLE ARE REPLACING THESE BRAKES THEMSELVES AND SOLVING THE ISSUE. THESE BIKES ARE UNDER WARRANTY AND TRIUMPH SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT IS INDEED A PROBLEM. *NM

BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL IS INCONSISTENT. THIS ALLOWS FOR THE LEVER TO HIT THE HANDLE BAR THUS PREVENTING THE BRAKE FROM WORKING PROPERLY. *NM

I DROVE WITH AT A VERY LOW SPEED (ABOUT 22 MPH), WHEN THE FRAME OF MY BRAND NEW TRIUMPH SPEED TRIPLE (2 MONTHS OLD, DRIVEN ABOUT 1,300 MILES) BROKE PARALLEL ON BOTH SIDES. I LOST CONTROL OVER THE BIKE AND CRASHED INTO A BUS. I WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED (BROKEN SCAPULA, TORN LIGAMENT AT THE LEFT FOOT) AND STILL UNDER MEDICAL TREATMENT, AFTER 4 MONTHS! AN EXPERTISE REVEALED THAT THE FRAME DEFINITELY BROKE BEFORE THE ACCIDENT! TRIUMPH PRETENDS THAT THIS IS THE FIRST CASE OF A BROKEN FRAME - I GOT NOTICE OF ANOTHER FRAME INCIDENT LAST MONTH IN GERMANY WHERE THE FRAME BROKE AT EXACTLY THE SAME PLACE. MY BIKE IS TOTALED AND TRIUMPH IS NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR ANYTHING!*JB

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
