2001 Triumph Sprint ST Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2001 Triumph Sprint ST, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

PLASTIC GAS TANK HAS EXPANDED. LIKELY DUE TO ETHANOL IN FUEL CAUSING WATER ABSORPTION IN PLASTIC. TANK IS VERY DIFFICULT TO INSTALL AFTER REMOVAL. STRESS ON TANK BECAUSE OF IMPROPER FIT COULD CAUSE CRACKS AND LEAKS. *TR

NHTSA ID 11323503 · filed May 6, 2020

FUEL TANK WAS REMOVED FROM MOTORCYCLE TO INSTALL A NEW THROTTLE CABLE. WHEN FUEL TANK WAS REINSTALLED, THE MOUNTING HOLES FOR THE FUEL TANK NO LONGER LINED UP, THE FUEL TANK DIDN'T FIT BETWEEN THE FRAME RAILS AND TO MOUNT THE FUEL TANK A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE NEEDED TO BE APPLIED TO FORCE THE MOUNTING HOLES TO LINE UP. THIS PUTS THE WHOLE TANK UNDER SEVERE STRESS AND COULD CAUSE LEAKS. THE NEXT TIME IT IS REMOVED, I DO NOT BELIEVE THE TANK WILL GO BACK INTO THE MOTORCYCLE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THE PLASTIC TANKS DUE TO ETHANOL FUEL THAT IS REQUIRED HERE IN THE US ON MANY MAKES/MODELS OF THE MOTORCYCLES.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
