Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.
0
Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Vermeer Manufacturing Company (Vermeer) is recalling certain model year 2008-2016 Vermeer BC1000XL, 2013-2016 BC700XL, 2012-2016 BC900XL, 2009-2016 BC1200XL, 2003-2016 BC1800XL, 2005-2014 BC600XL, 2005-2016 SC802 and 2005-2013 SC602 Brush Chippers and Stump Cutters. These models have LED side markers lights that do not have reflectors built into the lenses, reducing the visibility of the vehicle. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
The risk: The absence of reflectors could reduce the ability for others to see the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Vermeer will notify owners, and will supply reflective decals to be installed on the trailer sides, free of charge. The recall began on November 13, 2015. Owners may contact Vermeer customer service at 1-800-829-0051 or by email at [email protected].

The defect: VERMEER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2011 BC1200XL SINGLE AXLE BRUSH CHIPPER TRAILERS MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 24, 2009, THROUGH FEBRUARY 14, 2011. DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS THE INCORRECT LUG NUTS WERE INSTALLED ON WHEELS FOR THE 285/75/R16 FLOTATION TIRE OPTION. THESE INCORRECT LUG NUTS MAY LOOSEN, SINCE THE LUG NUTS DO NOT MATCH THE COUNTERSINK HOLES IN THE WHEEL DISC.
The risk: LOOSE LUG NUTS CAN DAMAGE THE WHEEL DISC AND RESULT IN WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE LUG NUTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT JUNE 1, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VERMEER AT 1-641-628-3141.

WHEELS

Beginning in August 2016 through early February 2020, specific wheels (steel rim) with bolt pattern 8 on 6½ inch circle to be used with 5/8" studs provided by a supplier: -have an incorrect lug nut contact area causing wheel lug nuts to loosen; and/or -can develop possible cracks causing the tire to lose air pressure. Both conditions may increase the risk of wheel loss and the risk of a crash. Death or serious injury is possible. Property damage may also occur. All sales are on hold.

The absence of side reflectors could reduce the ability for others to see the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
