What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

The issues I am having are exactly the ones that were subject to an earlier recall. NHTSA: 24V344 and Volkswagen 919A. From the text of that recall: "Due to a software issue, affected vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset. This can result in loss of speedometer inforation or loss of rearview camera image. As such, these vehicles fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rear Visibility." Displays that do not show critical information, such as vehicle speed or the rearview camera image, increase the risk of a crash." These symptoms are recurring in my vehicle and I have video documentation. Volkswagen is refusing to deal with me because "their diagnostic tools do not show any error message."
What happened: On XXX at approximately 6:49 PM, shortly after departing, the vehicle displayed error and warning messages, entered neutral, and would not engage Drive or Regenerative Brake mode. The vehicle remained inoperable in this condition for approximately one hour near the intersection at approximately [XXX] , during rush hour traffic. The vehicle recovered without mechanical intervention. This is the third occurrence of this failure mode within approximately 90 days. Safety risk: Loss of propulsion at or near a major intersection during rush hour traffic created a severe collision risk to vehicle occupants and surrounding motorists. The vehicle was unable to move under its own power for approximately one hour in high-density traffic conditions. Dealer/manufacturer confirmation: The vehicle was brought to Deel Volkswagen, Miami, FL on XXX and is currently under active diagnostic evaluation. This is the third reported occurrence of the same failure mode. A related drive error was previously documented at a XXX dealer service visit. Other inspections: UNKNOWN. Prior warning lamps or symptoms: Error and warning messages appeared on the vehicle display immediately prior to loss of drive mode. Identical failure modes were previously documented on 02/23/2026 and 05/11/2026. The vehicle has a history of repeated software campaigns and recalls including 97HB, 919A, 57J5, and 57J9 suggesting a pattern of unresolved electrical and software nonconformities. On [XXX], my 2022 Volkswagen I.D. 4 burst into flames and exploded while it was parked in my apartment complex parking structure ([XXX] ). My car was completely engulfed in flames, nearby cars as well as the parking structure experienced heat damage. My life and others were put in danger because even though my car was electric, it was parked in a resident garage near other cars who are gas operated, which could have caused an even more catastrophic damage if the fire would've spread more. Dallas Fire Department was present, and a fire report was conducted (Incident number #[XXX]). As of today, the vehicle has only been inspected by the Dallas Fire department, as well as a virtual video meeting with my insurance agent from Allstate. Before the incident the car charged normally, was operating normally and there was no indication or warning signs to indicate that there were any issues that would have caused this. THEI VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN 2022 AND SO FOR EITHER THE DEALERSHIP OR THE VW DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE. I AM NOT ABLE TO LEASE MY VEHICLE UNDER TURO OR ANY OTHER ONLINE CAR RENTING PROGRAMS. I WAS TOLD THE PARTS WERE BACK ORDERED BUT ALL THE RESALE VEHICLES AT DEALERSHIP ARE ALREADY FIXED FOR THIS RECALL ISSUE.

[XXX] [XXX] September 14, 2025 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590 Subject: Formal Complaint – Safety Defect in 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 (Power Steering and Brake Failure) Dear Sir or Madam, I am submitting this formal complaint regarding a serious safety defect in my 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, which resulted in a crash and a minor injury to my wife. This defect poses a substantial risk of death or serious injury to the driving public. On [XXX], my wife experienced sudden unintended acceleration, followed immediately by complete loss of braking and steering control. She was unable to avoid leaving the roadway and entered a ditch, sustaining a minor injury. The vehicle suffered fender damage. The vehicle was towed to our authorized Volkswagen dealership. The dealership’s technician documented that the power steering module failed. However, Volkswagen of America subsequently dispatched an engineer, who instructed the dealer not to communicate further with us. Volkswagen headquarters later claimed the power steering module failed only because the vehicle entered the ditch—an explanation directly at odds with the technician’s report and a witness account. Volkswagen has refused to accept responsibility, declined to cover medical or repair costs, and denied replacement of the failed power steering module. Our insurance provider also declined coverage, determining that the accident was caused by a mechanical failure. Legal and Regulatory References 1.49 U.S.C. § 30118 – Motor Vehicle Safety Act Requires manufacturers to notify NHTSA and vehicle owners when they determine a motor vehicle contains a defect related to motor vehicle safety. The failure of the power steering and braking systems clearly qualifies as a “safety-related defect” because it directly compromises steering and stopping ability. 2.49 C.F.R. At 43k miles, 90F outside temps, battery SOC at 20%, charged the car at a fast charger getting 140kw. Daytime Running Lights, DRL, were on. After the charging session was over at 80%, the driver's side DRL went and stayed dim. Dealership replaced the entire headlight under warranty. At 77k miles, 94F outside temps, battery SOC at 20%, using a fast charger and getting 145kw with DRL left on. After the charging session was over at 80%, the passenger's DRL went and stayed dim. I normally turn off the DRL and forgot this one time.
Electrical gremlins present at time of purchase (3/14/2025). Entered service and repair on 3/17/2025 and remained for 30-45 days. Upon coming to retrieve vehicle electrical malfunctions still present upon entering vehicle in the service bay, alerted advisor. Car was checked back into service immediately and remained for 60-90 days. Between March and December I have had continuous electrical gremlins present from Dashboard and display malfunction, interior lights malfunction, trunk/doors/locks/windows malfunction to no end and no repair in sight. This specific vehicle is a lemon and riddled with irreparable electrical gremlins, it has cost me significant income loss and loss of faith in the reliability of Volkswagen brand that I love so much.

The front wheel assembly detached from the vehicle while I was driving. The vehicle is a Volkswagen ID.4 currently under lease. Prior to the incident, the vehicle had multiple wheel alignment services performed by an authorized Volkswagen dealership on May 24, 2025 and August 11, 2025. After the wheel detached on February 1st, 2026, the vehicle was towed and repaired by an independent repair shop. The vehicle and repaired wheel assembly may still be available for inspection if requested. The wheel detached while the vehicle was traveling on a public street, which caused an immediate loss of control and created a serious risk of collision and injury to myself and other road users. The vehicle could not be driven and required a tow. A police officer assisted at the scene in arranging a tow truck because the vehicle was immobilized.
The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument panel became inoperable. The contact stated that the instrument panel was blank. The contact restarted the vehicle for the instrument panel to function as needed. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The manufacturer denied a buyback option for the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 16,600. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

CAr failed to move - twice. Taken to dealership twice. Dealership refuses to acknowledge ana address problem, even though online forums reveal that this is a common problem.
While driving to work at 6:45AM, on a secondary road with the vehicle in "B" mode and the main cruise control switch active, but not on, I approached an intersection and was attempting to use the vehicle's regenerative braking. My right foot was off the gas and gently resting on the brake peddle. This is when I felt the car suddenly accelerate. I immediately pressed the break peddle which slowed the car appropriately, but not to a complete stop. I released the break at which point the car re-accelerated. I immediately reapplied the break and came to a complete stop. There was a car in front of me and if I had not reacted so quickly it's possible I would have run into that vehicle. After these two episodes I immediately pulled off the road into a parking lot and got out of the car to do a visual inspection. After seeing nothing wrong I proceeded to drive to work without incident making sure the cruise control main switch was deactivated. The car is waiting inspection by the local dealership and available for inspection. The problem has never reoccured. No warning lamps nor messages present prior to or during the incident.

1. I still can't make sense of what exactly malfunctioned at my car accident on 9/26/2025 but I have reported to the Volkswagen Customer Service on 9/27/2025 and they couldn't give me a precise answer and told me they will have to research and call me back yesterday - 9/30/2025 but I haven't got a call as of this writing. It basically activated something that accelerated suddenly the car and it is like someone took control over the car causing me to crash with 2 cars in front of me. Yes, it is available for inspection. 2. I don't feel safe anymore with that car and also I am terrified that innocent people's lives will be put at risk. 3. I have seen some articles around the internet with the same experience that I had and it looks like Volkswagen has a law suit about it. 4. No, but I have reported to 911 and my insurance. 5. No, there's no any warning on the car dashboard before this incident happened.

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I purchased this vehicle on [XXX] from Sunnyvale Volkswagen and have experienced ongoing issues with the electrical system, infotainment, safety features, and OTA software updates. In early 2023, all error lights came on while driving, followed by a complete electrical system failure. The car would not restart until the next day. In 2024 and again in 2025, the center screen went completely black, disabling the rearview camera, hands-free navigation, climate control, and car settings. Restart attempts failed. On Feb 26, 2025, I accepted an OTA software update, which failed. I tried again on Feb 27. When I returned to the car later that day, the update was still running. The next day, the car would not unlock with either key. I tried the manual key over an hour and hundred times, which eventually worked, but the keys still weren’t recognized. I replaced both key batteries with new ones from the store (one key was spare hence never used), but the issue persisted. After several days of the same issue and hours of failed attempts, I was finally able to start the car and drive it to Sunnyvale VW on March 3rd. They acknowledged the issue and replaced both key batteries again with OEM ones, which temporarily resolved the problem. On March 25, I was contacted by Stevens Creek Volkswagen to address two open recalls. I scheduled an appointment for March 31 at 9am and called on March 30 to confirm. Despite the confirmation and their having a note for a loaner from the manager, I was told upon arrival—after waiting 15 minutes—that parts were unavailable and they couldn’t perform the repairs. I was told I’d be contacted when parts arrive, the same excuse I’ve heard since the recall opened a year ago. My safety recall remains unresolved. This vehicle has proven unreliable and unsafe for my family. I am requesting a full replacement of this lemon with a brand-new vehicle as soon as possible. The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that there was a message to update the software displayed. The contact stated that while driving at slow speeds, the vehicle came to a complete stop. While driving at various speeds, the camera and the infotainment screen were inoperable. The vehicle failed to start as needed. While the vehicle was idling, all the doors were locked, with the contact holding a key fob. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electric System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

235/55R19 Both front tires are showing abnormal rubber chunking or flaking off on the inner and outer tread. To avoid a possible failure or blow out, I replaced the tires with another brand and model. Bridgestone will not honor their warranty on these tires and I feel they are at fault. Online reports of blow-outs are fairly common with these tires.
[XXX] morning around 6.30 am I am traveling on [XXX] East bound about 1 mile past [XXX] and 1 mile west of [XXX] North Exit, driving on left most lane at about 65 MPH, Vehicle experienced a bump as it might have hit something on road. After that there was sound from vehicle and I pulled out to the shoulder. When checked found that passenger rear tire was flat. Vehicle towed to Discount Tire facility in Schaumburg IL by AAA. What I found is the tire was badly damaged all around and feel it is a quality issue as I drove 14,517 miles only on that tire and the way damage is shown in pictures is very bad. Request to take up with Manufacturer for remedy. Tire size 255/50 R19 107T INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This July (2026) I found the power steering to fail on two separate hot days, a similar issue also occurred in July of 2025. Using an OBDII reader it appears that it may have been related to a torque sensor.

I use this car for work daily, see patients in their homes. The driver door won’t locked, for 2 consecutive days and this is not the first time incident. Whenever this happens, I notify the dealer but they said VW does not have repair/solution to it yet. So, the car’s safety features (emergency braking, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control and etc) are not functional. This makes it dangerous for us/drivers. Because the door is unlocked and car is running, it sends signals/sounds warning the door is unlocked. It is terrifying driving the car while it’s raining. I am unsure if the car will suddenly stop. Also, the anti-fog doesn’t work unless I turn on the heater which reduces my mileage. I can barely see the road when it’s pouring rain. The car doesn’t charge to its usual 200 miles at 80% (recommended), only charging 180 miles at 90%. Hope you can help me please as I am the bread winner in the family. We do not have extra budget to get another car. Our old 2010 Prius is only good in town, not in major highways. If something happens to me due to this car’s manufacturing faults, my husband and child will be left destitute and end up homeless. Thank you for your assistance.
Some lights come on and off without buttons being pressed. Door click. Doesn’t consistently lock or unlock. Center console turns off with no notice.

Vehicle stopped in traffic in exit lane of freeway with a line of other vehicles. Driver at-fault was traveling at freeway speeds of 65+ mph and veered into the line of vehicles waiting to exit. Our ID4 had 4 passengers, adult driver, adult passenger, and two children in rear seat, all wearing seatbelts. The seatbelt of the rear passenger's side failed resulting in child hitting their head on headrest in front of them as well as the side window and post. Moderate injuries occurred and child is recovering. None of the others in the vehicle were injured. Likely failure is pretensioner of seatbelt. Currently in the accident investigation with insurance and the component has not been inspected at this time but certainly will be.

**Summary of Complaint:** A clicking sound occurs randomly during acceleration, deceleration, and when driving over bumpy roads. Despite bringing the vehicle to an authorized Volkswagen (VW) dealer three times, they were unable to diagnose or resolve the issue. The vehicle is only 2.5 years old and still under warranty. **Detailed Description:** 1. **Symptoms:** A random clicking sound is heard under the following conditions: - When accelerating - When decelerating - While driving on uneven or bumpy roads 2. **Attempts to Resolve:** The vehicle was brought to a VW dealership on three separate occasions. Despite their inspections, they were unable to identify the source of the problem. 3. **Vehicle Details:** The car is relatively new, only 2.5 years old, and remains within the manufacturer's warranty period. 4. **Concerns:** The unresolved issue may pose a safety risk, particularly if the sound is related to critical drivetrain or suspension components. Additionally, repeated unsuccessful repair attempts by the dealer are frustrating. **Resolution Sought:** I would like the NHTSA to review this issue and investigate whether this is a broader concern with similar VW models. I hope VW can be held accountable for properly diagnosing and fixing the problem under warranty.

I have two issue One issue is -door sometimes hard to open , I have to roll the window down to open it from outside / it's electronic touch sensitive and I have to wear rubber gloves to open the door with force - it happens randomly on both passenger and driver side . 4 to 5 times the problem occurs second issue is the car loosing power while driving and there is multiple errors on the screen and the car is slow to accelerate, and to drive it happened twice the on the first time I brought it to the dealership right away and they kept my car for 2 days and, they said it's clear to drive - it was approximately 6 K miles on the first incident. it happened again on about 8 K miles and I pull over to the shoulder then park and turn off my car , I waited few minutes, before turning on the car , then has power again after I took it to volkswagen on 9.5 K miles 2 weeks ago for routine maintenance 10K service and I mentioned that the loosing power happened again and they said they will keep my car overnight to find out then they said there is update or recall but I don't know if the update or recall is for that incident or something else , they said they did an update or recall on my car for full 1 day on top of the 10K miles routine. all incidents is mentioned to dealership when I take it for them the door handle and loosing power buy when I'm looking at the paperwork , it doesn't say that I brought the car there for that reason.. I wonder if they know the problem and don't know how to fix or they have different paperwork's or they are just ignoring... the tire that came with this car also is nail magnet, I waiting for Costco to schedule my tire replacement. with only 10K miles several flat tires already
