What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2012 Volkswagen Passat, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V834000 (Air Bags). The contact stated that the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the dealer refused to perform the repair until the contact paid for a diagnostic test for an internal communication error code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 185,000.
Car accident and all left side airbags deployed but not the drivers airbag which we had the recall repaired on.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
I own a 2012 Volkswagen Passat [VIN [XXX] ] with approximately 1315xx miles. On December 17, 2025, I took the car to Rockwall County Volkswagen for three recalls. The car was running and was driven 9.5 miles to the dealership under its own power. I left the engine running when I left the it with the service advisor. When I returned to retrieve the car the following day, the service advisor informed me the car would not start. Their explanation shifted within the same conversation — first that someone had shut it off and it would not crank, then that it would crank but would not start. They claimed they had to pushed it into the service bay, replaced the airbag, and "code the computer for the clock-spring." The dealer refused to repair the no-start condition that occurred in their custody. I towed the car home at my own expense - $161. I performed my own diagnostic work using VW scan tools. The vehicle exhibited a textbook immobilizer or component protection rejection pattern: it would crank, start briefly for 1–2 seconds, then shut off, with three instrument cluster chimes and the coolant fan activating. The scan tool could not communicate with all vehicle modules, consistent with a failed module programming. After contacting the dealer's service manager, I towed the car back to the dealership [$64]. The dealer kept it from December 2025 through April 7, 2026 — approximately four months. During this time, they replaced the battery (charging me) and replaced the engine control module with a used unit they sourced and reprogrammed (charging me a total of $804.38). On April 7, 2026, I drove the car home. The vehicle was driven less than 35 miles after pickup before failing again. On April 27, 2026, my daughter — who had just undergone a serious medical procedure — was driving the car home and was stranded on the side of the road in 90+ degree Texas heat when the car suddenly stopped running with no warning or indication of impending failure. We would have been in a life threating situation (very cold) if we would have not walked down highway to get internet service to look up the issue. What happened. We drove up from Phoenix to the mountains in Arizona. When starting the car after a stop (to look at a heard of Elk in a pasture) the car would not start. It would briefly start for a second then die. The dash lit up with many errors. We were stranded with no cell phone service with night approaching. We walked down the road and got cell service again and called family. Found out from online video while waiting for family to arrive you could disconnect the battery and reconnect to get the car started. We did this and it worked but engine light still was on. Car would not start again next morning and dash lit up. We would have been in a really bad situation (very cold) if we would have not walked down highway to get internet service to look up the issue. More internet research shows thousands of people have this problem.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
I noticed a fuel smell in the cabin area that continued to get worse. After pulling the back seat I was able to visually see the fuel pump that had lots of micro cracks which was causing a fuel leak. The leak was very dangerous and caused major foam damage to my rear seat and was a major hazard had anything caused an ignition in the cabin, it certainly would have burned the vehicle. I saved the fuel pumped after having a local shop replace it.
The fuel pump design to last the life of the vehicle exploded this is a 10k fix they ( extended the warranty to 120000 miles instead of replacing the bad pumps im at 1290000 miles i don’t understand how this is acceptable given the amount of issues and occurrences the fuel pump has exploded
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
Any time it rains and the car goes through a deeper than surface level puddle/wet area where the nose of the car has to dip down (think by railroad tracks, high water retention areas with lack of drainage, etc) as soon as the car dips down into the water, the steering wheel will lock up and I am unable to turn. It's severely dangerous as there is no give at all to the wheel as it is solidly locked and if you happen to be taking a curve or changing lanes etc, you will not be able to turn the car. My husband and myself have narrowly escaped severe car accidents as this is random and there is nothing you can do except try to force the wheel to turn. When I say the wheel is locked, it's a good 15-20 seconds of desperation trying to turn the wheel before it finally unlocks and I am able to correct the direction of the car. Living in FL with high rainfall chances, including sporadic downpours that unfortunately leave situations like this to occur often, it is a severe safety risk for myself and for other drivers. I have been lucky so far that when this has occurred I have been able to eventually correct the steering, however there have been several severe near misses that are completely out of my control. Please help find a solution, as there doesn't seem to be a fix for this anywhere that I've looked. I do not want to spend money I don't have taking it from dealership to dealership for them to be just as stumped as we are. I have two young kids and not only do I not feel safe letting them in the car, I seriously dread any time it rains because of this issue. I'm not talking about driving through deep bodies of water, but normal rainy weather situations on everyday roads that are otherwise uneventful. Unfortunately I am in an area where water seems to gather quite a bit on the everyday roads I need for work and this situation is truly unavoidable. I put one date below as when it occurred, but it has happened several times in the last week alone due to heavy rains
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while turning the steering wheel in either direction, there was a clicking sound was coming from the steering column. Additionally, while operating the vehicle, the air bag warning light remained illuminated, with the cruise control feature inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the clockspring was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact stated that the failure was repaired on two previous occasions. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking an unknown fluid underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the vacuum pump, oil pan, and the gaskets needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to contact the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was 193,211.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 76 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT AND EXHAUST FLUID WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE PERSISTED FOR OVER A YEAR. AN ERROR CODE STATED VEHICLE SHUT-OFF AT 200 MILES WAS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE DID NOT SHUT-OFF. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO OVERTURF VOLKSWAGEN KIA (1016 WEST COLUMBIA DRIVE, KENNEWICK, WA 99336, (509-586-3185) HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE KNOCK SENSOR AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURE WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE BUT PROVIDED NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Lost power reconnect batter n steering locked
I was driving this particular day through a busyfour way stoplight intersection around time school was dismissing so 3:30ish PM. And I lost all power to my vehicle with just the battery light flashing once. I barely made it out of the i intersection and to the shoulder of the road as there was no power steering and i had to pump my breaks to stop. I called the local police and let them know it would be towed tomorrow morning. The tow bill was 100 dollars and i had replaced the battery thinking it was the problem. The brand new battery drained in two minutes tops after install alternator was tested and fuses were in working order all except for one that went to my12 volt charging port which was replaced as well as serpentine belt was replaced with alternator test. The battery still drains instantly and when speaking with volkswagon suntrup in sunset hills st. Louis which is the nearest Volkswagen dealership about 30 minute drive my car still is under a dealership warranty for the national emissions recall that was just fixed after i purchased the vehicle. The dealership refuses to come get/ fix/ diagnose or rectify vehicle although admitting to knowing this year has parasitic draws instally killing a brand new battery even while driving was/is a very dangerous situation for me and my family. This car has been sitting in my drive way now for 6 months while nothing is being by vw and i am without safe or working transportation for my family. Ive also been told by vw. That they cant find some parasitic draws and are confused as me!
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
My airbag light is on. Had a test done and it also indicated airbag problem. My car was supposedly repaired of this defect some time ago, but here we are. Also when entering my VIN for any recall; it lists defective light. Previous work done by Audi/VW of Jackson, Ms. On 12/9/22 the airbag indicator light and service light is on.
MY STARTER HAS BEEN NOT WORKING IVE REPLACED IT MULTIPLE TIMES WITH ORIGINAL PARTS. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC & HE TOLD ME THIS CAR HAS ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WHICH IS WHY MY STREERING WHEEL GETS LOCKED UP THAT IT DOESNT READ THE KEY. ALSO RECENTLY ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS HAVE BEEN GOING ON & OFF TELLING ME ERROR CHECK BRAKES , ERROR CHECK TIRES & MY RADIO KEEPS TURNING ON & OFF, ALSO MY LIGHTS FROM INSIDE THE CAR DONT WORK. YESTERDAY MY CAR DIDNT WANT TO PUT THE WINDOWS UP & AFTER MY CAR DIDNT WANT TO TURN ON & MY KEY WOULDNT COME OUT OF THE KEY HOLE. IT TURNED OFF ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING ON A STREET GOING UP A HILL I HAD TO BREAK SO FAST BECAUSE IT STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. SO I TOWED IT HOME & NOW IT DOESNT TURN ON AT ALL OR WORK.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVERS DOOR HANDLE WILL NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE AND VW WANTS A TON TO REPAIR IT. ON THE FORUMS & INTERNET THEY STATED WE SHOULD BE OPENING A CASE HERE AS ITS A KNOWN ISSUE AND SHOULD BE RECALLED.
I KEEP HAVING A PROBLEM IN FREEZING WEATHER WITH MY VEHICLE DOOR MECHANISM FREEZING LOCKED. I CAN NOT GET INTO OF OUT OF THE CAR ONCE FROZEN. THIS IS SPECIFICALLY THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR. I HAVE LOOKED UP THE ISSUE AND PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE DOOR ACTUATOR. VW HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN TO THE DEALERS BUT NO RECALL. THERE IS OVER ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND VIEWS ON YOUTUBE RELATED TO THIS ISSUE AND I DOUBT PEOPLE ARE JUST WATCHING THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE BORED. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS I CAN NOT GET INTO MY VEHICLE WHEN BELOW FREEZING AND IF IT IS REALLY COLD I CAN NOT GET OUT UNTIL THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE RAISES ENOUGH. I HAVE BEEN HAVING TO CRAWL THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE ON COLD DAYS. THIS HAS CAME UP QUITE A BIT WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED OUTSIDE ON REALLY COLD DAYS. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IT SEEMS WATER CAN GET INTO THE ACTUATOR AND THEN THE PROBLEM HAPPENS. USUALLY THE HEATER IN THE CAR WILL THAW THE DOOR BY THE TIME I GET TO WHERE I AM GOING BUT IF THE TEMP IS REALLY COLD I WILL STILL BE LOCKED IN THE DRIVER SIDE. THIS STARTED LAST YEAR BUT I TRIED GREASE AND OIL HOPING IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM BUT THIS IS ON GOING.

MY 2012 PASSAT HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE FLYWHEEL AS IT WAS STARTING TO COME APART AND CAUSE A RATTLE NOISE LIKE AN EXHAUST PIPE RATTLING IT WENT AWAY WHEN I TOOK RPM TO A LITTLE HIGHER NUMBER HAD IT FIXED BY DEALERSHIP I WONDER WHY THERE WASN'T A RECALL ON THIS AS IT HAPPENED TO MANY PEOPLE I HAD IT REPLACED IN TIME BUT WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO CATCH IT IN TIME IF I HADN'T AND IT BROKE AS I WAS DRIVING IT WOULD HAVE STOPPED THE ENGINE CAUSING MULTIPLE PROBLEMS AND DESTROYING THE ENGINE AND AT 75 MPH COULD POSSIBLY GET INTO A SERIOUS WRECK THIS FLYWHEEL DIDN'T WEAR OUT IT WAS COMPLETELY COMING APART AND FOR A 2012 WITH 80,000 IT SHOULDN'T BE COMING APART THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN MISTREATED AND HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE SINCE NEW ALL RECOMMENDED BY FACTORY. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE NO RECALLS ANYWHERE FOR THIS FLYWHEEL PART ON A TDI 2.0 PASSAT.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
FAILURE OF THE ABS CONTROL/PUMP ON MY 2012 VW PASSAT WITH LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT CAUSING UNSAFE DRIVING CONDITIONS. I LOOK ONLINE AND SEE THAT THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE FOR VW OWNERS I SENT THIS TO VW AS A CONCERN AND TO NHTSA AS A CONCERN PREVIOUSLY BUT NEVER HEARD ANYTHING FROM EITHER ONE.
I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR THE BREAK WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO PUSH, IT WAS LIKE PUSHING A LEAD WEIGHT AND FINALLY THE CAR STOPPED AFTER PUSHING WITH ALL MY STRENGTH WITH BOTH FEET. I WAS DRIVING INTO THE PUBLIX PARKING LOT AT MIRASOL IN PALM BEACH GARDENS AND PARKING THE CAR IN THE PARKING SPOT, LUCKILY THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON MY WAY TO THE STORE OR I WOULD HAVE CRASHED. SO I WAS ACTUALLY IN MOTION IN THE PARKING LOT TRYING TO PARK MY CAR.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE HEATER CORE IS CLOGGED AND THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS OF THE CAR, BOTH WINDSHIELD AND DOOR, DO NOT DEFOG/DEFROST FOR UP TO 20 MINUTES IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER. IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE ONLINE WITH MANY OWNERS OF VW'S IN THE 2012+ RANGE AFFECTED. I ALMOST HIT SOMEONE IN THE CROSSWALK TWICE RECENTLY DUE TO THE DECREASED VISIBILITY.
WINDSHIELD VISIBILITY DEFROST/DEFOG FAILURE: DEFROST FAILED ON PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE. NO HEAT ON PASSENGER SIDE OF VEHICLE. CAUSES ICE ACCUMULATION ON WINDSHIELD AND FOGS UP DUE TO INSUFFICIENT HEAT. CAUSES SAFETY AND DRIVE-ABILITY ISSUES IN COLD AND EXTREME COLD WEATHER. HEATER CORE FAILURE MATCHES SIMILAR FAILURE REPORTED NHTSA ID #10079822. REPAIR IS THE EXACT SAME AS NHTSA ID #10079822 AS WELL AS SAME REPAIR REPLACEMENT PART. SHOP ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THE SAME PART MANUFACTURE FAILURE EXISTS BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE THIS VIN. VW NEEDS TO EXPAND PART FAILURE TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL VEHICLES WITH SAME FAILING PART. FAILED PART NUMBER 561.819.031.A AND REPLACED WITH 561.819.031.B. DIAGNOSIS IS IDENTICAL TO THE 2013 GASOLINE PASSAT. I HAVE ALSO CONFIRMED THAT THIS REPAIR IS ONLY BEING OFFERED FOR GASOLINE CARS AND NOT THE DIESEL CARS. I CANNOT CONFIRM BUT I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS TO DO WITH THE DIESEL RECALL. THIS IS ROTTEN I AM NOT OFFERED A FIX FOR THE EMISSIONS AND THEY WILL BUY MY CAR BACK BUT I WOULD TAKE A LOSS OF $3000. IN THE MEAN TIME THEY ARE NOT OFFERING EXTENDED WARRANTY REPAIRS OR ARE ONLY OFFERING THEM ON GASOLINE FUELED CARS. *TR

TAKATA RECALL: I PHONED VW CUSTOMER CARE ON 08/10/2016 REQUESTING A RECALL LETTER BUT NEVER RECEIVED IT. I REPORTED THIS TO JONATHAN BRADLEY/HALLMARK VW USED CAR SALESMAN. I REPORTED TO GOSSETT VW SERVICE AGENT JEFF WHO SAID MY RECALL DATE WAS 09/30/2017. 08/25/2017 AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT FLASHED THIS ONE TIME. THE LOW TIRE INDICATOR CAME ON 09/13/2017 SO I DROVE TO GOSSETT TO HAVE MY TIRES INFLATED. THE TECHNICIAN DID NOT RE-SET THE INDICATOR IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT PER JENNIFER OSBOURN/SERVIDE AGENT AS IT WAS LOCKED. WHEN I DROVE THE CAR AGAIN ON 09/16/17 THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, SEAT BELT PRETENSIOR & LOW TIRE INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. GOT APPOINTMENT ON 09/22/17 TO HAVE THEIR WORK INSPECTED. I ALSO ASKED FOR AUTHORIZATION TO REPAIR THE TAKATA AIRBAG. ON 09/22/17 GOSSETT REFUSED TO TOUCH THE CAR UNLESS I PAID THEM $140.00 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. FOLLOWING THE DIAGNOSTIC I WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST ANOTHER $140.00 TO CLEAN DIRT FROM THE SHORT TO THE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR. NO PROBLEMS EXISTED PRIOR TO THE 09/13/ VISIT TO INFLATE THE TIRES. TOTAL PAID WAS $340.41. FOLLOWING THIS VISIT THE RE-SET IS INOPERABLE, THE LOW TIRE INDICATOR, SEAT BELT, AIRBAG AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS COME ON AND OFF EACH TIME THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON AND FLASH IN AND OUT DURING DRIVING. THE ESP/ABS LIGHT IN THE MIDDLE PANEL ON THE DASH COMES ON, THE FUEL FILLER FLAP DOOR IS MALFUNCTIONING IN THE REVERSE ORDER FOR THIS YEAR VEHICLE, ERROR AIRBAG AND ERROR ESP/ABS WARNINGS COME ON. ON 09/22/17 MY VEHICLE WAS RETURNED WITH BROKEN OFF PART # VW 8E038813348E>ABS< FRONT PASSENGER FLOOR. REPORTED VIA MAIL TOAL GOSSETT/CEO, VW CUSTOMER CARE LIVE CHAT, TELEPHONE TO JENNIFER OSBORN/SERVICE AGENT, DWAYNE HILL/SERVICE MANAGER GOSSETT GERMANTOWN. TUESDAY, 10/17/I RECEIVED A CALL FROM JASON TRIPP BUT HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH HIM TO DATE.

THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES EXCESSIVE "WHEEL HOP" UPON STARTING FROM A STOPPED POSITION, ESPECIALLY ON A WET ROADWAY AND A HILL. THE TIRES JUST CANNOT GET TRACTION AND SPIN. AS WELL ONCE THE WHEELS START TO SPIN THE ECS (STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM) CUTS POWER AND APPLIES BRAKING WHICH HAS LEAD TO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING INTO TRAFFIC. THERE IS NO ECS DISABLE SWITCH AS WITH PREVIOUS MODELS, SO I CANNOT TEMPORARILY DISABLE THE SYSTEM FOR TROUBLESHOOTING OF THE ISSUE. LOSING POWER WHILE PULLING OUT INTO THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AND EXPERIENCING A POWER LOSS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. THE CAR CAME WITH HANKOOK OPTIMA H426 TIRES AND I SWITCHED TO YOKOHAMA AVID ENVIGOR (V RATED) TIRES BELIEVING THE ISSUE WAS THE TIRES. I AM AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER WITH 33 YEARS OF DRIVING AND HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING FROM LIGHT ACCELERATION, FEATHERING THE ACCELERATOR, USING THE S MODE OF THE TIPTONIC TRANSMISSION AND USING THE TIPTRONIC CONTROL IN D MODE TO HOLD THE TRANSMISSION IN THE LOWER GEAR AND TRYING TO START IN A HIGHER GEAR TO REDUCE THE TORQUE TO THE WHEELS, BUT THE TIPTRONIC WILL NOT ALLOW UPSHIFTING WHEN STOPPED. I RAISED THIS CONCERN WITH THE DEALERSHIP SINCE THE WHEEL HOP CAUSING BANGING OF THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM AGAINST THE TRAVEL STOPS. THIS THUMPING AND EXTREME MOVEMENT OF THE SUSPENSION CANNOT BE GOOD FOR THE LONGEVITY OF THE EQUIPMENT. THE DEALERSHIP STATES "IT IS PERFORMING TO SPECS AS DESIGNED." WELL THEN I THINK THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW. *TR
