Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data
Data refreshed
Our database contains 6 NHTSA owner-reported complaints for the 1998 Volvo V70AWD, most frequently naming the fuel system, brakes and driver assistance categories. 9 manufacturer communications are on file.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.
When owners filed reports about this model year
Not enough dated records to plot a meaningful trend — 3 months of data.
Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded
Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.
No recalls in our database for this model year
That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

DT: VEHICLE STALLED/DIED, AND LOST POWER DUE TO THROTTLE BODY FAILURE. *AK
ON JULY 12, 2005 MY VOLVO V70R AWD WAGON STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER SAID THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE COST WAS $385.19. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY SCARY EXPERIENCE AND COULD HAVE BEEN LIFE-THREATENING IF WE HAD BEEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. WHEN I HEARD ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH 1999-2001 VOLVOS, I THOUGHT MY YEAR CAR MAY ALSO FALL INTO THIS GROUP. VOLVO CLAIMS TO BE THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY BUT THIS EXPERIENCE HAS MADE ME FEEL THAT MY CAR IS NOT RELIABLE AND IS UNSAFE. *NM
WITHOUT WARNING MY 1998 VOLVO V70 AWD WAGON SHUTS OFF...WHILE DRIVING. POWER STEERING AND ALL. I'VE SPENT OVER $700 IN REPAIRS AND THE MECHANIC CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT. NOW I DARE NOT TAKE IT ON A HIGHWAY. THE RECENT REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING TO YEARS 1999 AND ON MUST BE AMENDED TO INCLUDE THE 1998. I BOUGHT THIS WAGON BECAUSE OF VOLVO'S LONGEVITY REPUTATION. NOW IT'S A POTENTIAL ROAD HAZARD. *NM
1) VEHICLE STALLS WHILE DRIVING IN ANY WEATHER CONDITION 2) VEHICLE WILL NOT START AFTER STALLING 3) POWER BRAKES AND POWER STEERING ARE REDUCED AND PRESENT A DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION 4) VOLVO DEALERSHIP AVOIDS FAULTY DESIGN RESPONSIBILITY. *NM

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
