Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

EXTREME JERKING AND STALLING OF THE ENGINE AT HWY SPEEDS IN A CONGESTED AREA CAUSING EXTREME WORRY ABOUT BEING HIT FROM BEHIND OR BEING TOSSED OFF AND TRASHED ON I-40 CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. DURING THE MECHANICAL INSPECTION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FUEL PUMP'S PLASTIC HOUSING HAS A FLAW, THERE IS A COLD MOLD LINE IN THE PRESSURE VESSEL. THERE IS A LONG AREA OF THE HOUSING THAT IS VISIBLY FLAWED; AN EXCESSIVELY THIN WALL SECTION THAT IS A RESULT OF A MOLDING PROCESSES INABILITY TO MAINTAIN PROPER MOLD FLOW AT THE PROPER TEMP TO ASSURE A COMPLETELY SOLID PRESSURE VESSEL. THIS FLAW HAS ALLOWED THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING TO RUPTURE CAUSING RAPID CHANGES IN FUEL PRESSURE BEING SUPPLIED TO THE FUEL INJECTORS. THIS UNPREDICTABLE JERKING AND STALLING OF THE ENGINE IS A DANGER TO ALL WHO MAY HAVE THIS UNPREDICTABLE FLAW IN THEIR SYSTEM.

3RD GEAR, LOUD WHINING SOUNDS COMING FROM TRANSMISSION AREA WHILE IN 3RD GEAR BETWEEN 30 AND 40 MPH. YAMAHA HAS CHANGED THEIR 3RD GEAR DESIGN AND CHANGED THEIR REPLACEMENT PART NUMBER, YET HAS NOT RECALLED AND REPAIRED OUR BIKES THAT HAVE THE OLD DESIGN. IS THIS A COVER UP BY THE MANUFACTURER OFF A WELL KNOWN CONDITION THAT CAN CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO LOCK UP AND THE RIDER LOOSING CONTROL CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY AND OR DEATH? PLEASE DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO ME AND MY FAMILY.

THE TRANSMISSION'S THIRD GEAR IS FAILING(GRINDING NOISE WHEN IN MOTION) USUALLY STARTS FROM 20 TO 50 K MILES .I CONTACTED YAMAHA AND THEY CLAIM NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY PROBLEM. THAT STATEMENT IS A TOTAL LIE AS THEY HAVE EVEN CREATED A REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE PROBLEM GEAR , 3RD PINION, P/N 99999-03864-00 (REPLACES 1D7-17131-01-00) THE ORIGINAL GEAR WAS NOT PROPERLY HEAT TREATED = CAUSE FAILURE .THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE DRIVE TRAIN LOCKUP AND CRASHES LEADING TO FATALITIES. AS LONG AS YAMAHA CAN GET PEOPLE TO PAY FOR THIS DEFECT.( I.E. NO RECALL ) THEY WILL CONTINUE TO ENDANGER LIVES AND CAUSE CRIPPLING INJURY.

They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
