2008 Yamaha YP400 Owner Complaints

Reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers, shown in full

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

THIS IS A 400CC MOTOR SCOOTER BEING RIDDEN DURING AN 85 DEGREE DAY. THE VEHICLE ENGINE STALLED AFTER ENTERING A BUSY INTERSECTION AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. AFTER PUSHING THE VEHICLE OUT OF THE INTERSECTION, ATTEMPTS TO RESTART FOR OVER AN HOUR FAILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TRAILERED HOME. THIS SCENARIO WAS ( HOT TEMPERATURE STALL AND FAILED RESTART) WAS REPEATED AT MY RESIDENCE ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE YAMAHA DEALERSHIP, DIAGNOSED WITH A FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY FAILURE, AND CONFIRMED REPAIR UPON PUMP REPLACEMENT. IT CAN BE CALCULATED FOR APPROXIMATE PUMP LIFE TO BE 80 TO 120 HOURS OF OPERATION (AVERAGE 20 TO 30 MPH) FOR THE LIMITED 2360 MILES ACCUMULATED. THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE COMPONENT LIFE FOR A FUEL INJECTION VEHICLE AND INDICATIVE OF A MANUFACTURING QUALITY PROBLEM THAT COULD RESULT IN POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT SHOULD PUMP FAILURE OCCUR IN A BUSY INTERSECTION. I INQUIRED ABOUT WHETHER THIS PUMP FAILURE COULD BE CUSTOMER INDUCED AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE UNAWARE THAT IT WAS POSSIBLE TO CAUSE THIS IN-FUEL TANK PUMP TO BE ABUSED BY CUSTOMERS.
