The defect: ON CERTAIN UTILITY SERVICE TRUCK CHASSIS EQUIPPED WITH ALTEC ELECTRIC HYDRAULIC MANUAL UTILITY BRAKE CONTROL, THE UNITS EXPERIENCE LOSS OF BRAKES DURING AND INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER DRIVE ARM AND BRAKE LINE THAT RUNS BETWEEN THE CHASSIS MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE CONTROL INSIDE THE CAB.
The risk: THIS INTERFERENCE CAN CAUSE THE BRAKE LINE TO RUPTURE. SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH CAN RESULT FROM IMPAIRMENT OR FAILURE OF THE VEHICLE BRAKES.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WIPER LINKAGE INTERFERENCE, AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY PARTS FREE OF CHARGE. THIS RECALL ONLY INVOLVED ONE CUSTOMER. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ALTEC AT 919-528-2535.

Safety recall

NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
