The defect: ALTEC IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 DM 45, DM 47 AND DM 50 DIGGER DERRICK UTILITY VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 2010 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2010. THESE UNITS MAY HAVE CRACKS IN THE BOOM LIFT CYLINDER ROD EYE CASTING THAT CAN CAUSE THE CASTING TO FAIL.
The risk: IF THE ROD EYE CASTING FAILS, THE BOOM MAY SUDDENLY FALL CAUSING DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY.
The remedy: ALTEC WILL INSPECT THE LIFT CYLINDER ROD EYE CASTING FOR CRACKS. ANY CYLINDERS FOUND WITH CRACKS WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JUNE 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ALTEC AT 1-877-462-5832.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
