The defect: TRUCK SERVICES IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 SCHOOL BUSES BUILT ON BLUE BIRD CHASSIS FROM JANUARY 2009 THROUGH DECEMBER 2009 AND EQUIPPED WITH CARRIER GENV EM-1 EVAPORATOR UNITS (EM-1) MANUFACTURED FROM JANUARY 1, 2006 THROUGH DECEMBER 2010, CONTAINING A DELPHI PACK-CON III FUSE HOLDER IN AN ALLIED MOTION MOTOR ASSEMBLY; EM-1 UNIT PART NUMBERS 77-62112-XX AND 77-62512-XX, STARTING WITH SERIAL NUMBER KNT90890232 TO SERIAL NUMBER NNE91230058. DUE TO TIME, TEMPERATURE, AND/OR VIBRATION, THE FUSE MAY LOOSEN IN THE FUSE HOLDER RESULTING IN HIGH RESISTANCE AND ARCING.
The risk: IF SUFFICIENT ARCING OCCURS, THE FUSE HOLDER MAY MELT, AND MAY BE ACCOMPANIED BY FLAME, SMOKE AND POTENTIAL FIRE.
The remedy: TRUCK SERVICES WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND INSTRUCT THEM TO CONTACT EITHER CARRIER OR A TRUCK SERVICES DEALER TO OBTAIN THE FREE REMEDY. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN FEBRUARY 10, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CARRIER AT 1-800-793-4741 OR TRUCK SERVICES AT 1-317-248-5606.

Safety recall
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
