What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2004 BMW 330CI, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
While backing out of a short driveway and placed t to drive, the vehicle revved and started speeding out of control with brakes applied. The vehicle sideswiped a neighbors vehicle before crashing head on into a tree causing it to stop. I had jerked up the emergency brake and ripped the key out of the ignition. The replaced airbags did not deploy.
"TAKATA RECALL" I'VE RECEIVED CONFIRMATION MY VEHICLE IS ONE OF THE VEHICLE APART OF THE TAKATA RECALL. I'M A SINGLE FATHER OF A 13 YR OLD SON. KNOWING THE DANGER MY SON HAS BEEN IN ALL OF THIS TIME HAS SHAKEN MY CORE COMFORT ZONE TO DUST. I'M NOW IN THE PROCESS TO CORRECT THIS BAD AIRBAG CURRENTLY IN MY VEHICLE. MY SON'S FUTURE HAS BEEN PLACED IN RUSK AND THAT WILL NOT BE LEFT UNCHECKED BY MEANS AVAILABLE. I WAS HIT WITH MY SON IN THE CAR AND THE BAD AIRBAG DIDN'T DEPLOY, THANK GOD!
Engine

From owner reports, verbatim
THE VEHICLE IS A 330CIC WHICH A PURCHASED IN 2007, THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM & OXYGEN SENSORS. *TR
THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURRING ON ALL E46 330 M54 ENGINES WITH THE ZHP(PERFORMANCE PACKAGE) THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS TO BMW NA ABOUT THIS ISSUE. AT 2000 - 3000 RPMS THE ENGINE RATTLES LIKE A COFFEE CAN FULL OF MARBLES. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO BMW BUT THEY STATED THAT THIS IS PERFECTLY NORMAL. BMW IS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE ISSUE IS THE DUAL VANOS UNIT THEY PUT INTO THE M54 ENGINE IS USING BELRIN BUSHINGS AND THEY ARE FAILING. THERE IS A COMPANY CALLED DR. VANOS THAT FIXES THIS ISSUE BY REBUILDING THE OEM VANOS WITH UPGRADED BUSHINGS. THIS UNIT COST $500, WHICH I AM NOT WILLING TO SPEND AS I HAVE A 100,000 MILE WARRANTY FROM BMW. *TR
Transmission
Reports naming the automatic or manual transmission, including shifting behaviour, shudder, slipping and transmission control modules.
From owner reports, verbatim
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE - I STARTED MY CAR, LET IT WARM UP AND MOVED THE SHIFTER TO REVERSE. THE VEHICLE JERKED (MY GLASSES FLEW OFF MY FACE) AND MADE A ROUGH GRINDING SOUND. I MOVED THE SHIFTER BACK TO PARK AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME GRINDING SENSATION AND NOISE. IT WAS TOWED AND DEALER SAID THAT THE 330CI WAS ONLY USING TWO GEARS DUE TO THE MALFUNCTION. *TR
I PURCHASED A 330I BMW IN DECEMBER OF 2003. THE CAR HAS LESS THEN 1500 MILES ON IT AND HAS DEVELOPED A HUGE PROBLEM. IN THE MORNINGS WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD, THE ENGINE WILL REV WHEN ITS IN DRIVE AND NOT GO INTO GEAR. IT TAKES QUITE A FEW SECONDS FOR IT TO ENGAGE INTO 'D'. THE CAR WILL ALSO JERK INTO 1ST GEAR AFTER IT FINALLY STARTS TO DRIVE. I HAVE JUST TAKEN MY BRAND NEW BMW INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TEST ON IT AND UNBELIEVABLE TO MY EARS.....I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM THEM SAYING THE WHOLE ENGINE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE REPLACED...."THERE IS SOME KIND OF FLAW".....AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET AND FINDING OUT THAT THE BMW 3 SERIES HAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS SAME PROBLEM..I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN RIPPED OFF AND VERY UPSET. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL BY BMW. THIS WAS MY FIRST BMW...AND AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE...MAY BE MY LAST...IF NOTHING IS DONE IN THE FUTURE TO CORRECT THIS OBVIOUS TRANSMISSION FLAW! *NM
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE ADAPTIVE BIXENON HEADLIGHTS USE BIODEGRADABLE WIRING. THIS WIRING CANNOT WITHSTAND THE HEADLIGHTS ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHT MOVEMENT. THESE WIRES CAN TEAR OR WORSE THE INSULATION CAN CRUMBLE OFF. THIS LEADS TO A HUGE FIRE RISK. FURTHERMORE, BMW DOES NOT HAVE ANY FORM OF FIXING THE PROBLEM. THEY ONLY SELL NEW HEADLIGHT UNITS THAT HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. TO BE CLEAR, NO INCIDENT OCCURRED TO CAUSE THIS ISSUE OTHER THAN STANDARD USE OF THE CAR. IT IS A TICKING TIME BOMB ON ALL CARS USING THIS WIRING, WHICH ALSO INCLUDES THE E60 M5 PLATFORM. THE RESULT IS HEADLIGHTS THAT CAN TURN OFF AT ANY TIME OR WORSE THEY CAN SHORT AND CAUSE A FIRE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 BMW 330CI. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT HAD TO COAST THE VEHICLE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE SIMILAR FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE INSTERSTATE AND THE CAR LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT START. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND REQUIRED A NEW FUEL PUMP WHICH COST $1,135.13. PRIOR TO THE PROBLEM, THE GAS MILEAGE DECREASED ALTHOUGH THE CAR HAD BEEN TUNED UP BY THE SAME DEALER. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 122,000 MILES. A REQUEST WAS MADE TO RETURN THE OLD PART. *TR

Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
ON SEVERAL OCCASSIONS, AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE TO THE DESTINATION, AND AFTER PRESSING THE UNLOCK BUTTON ON THE CENTRAL CONSOLE, YOU COULD AUDIBLY HEAR THE LOCKS "UNLOCK", VISIBLY SEE THE BUTTONS ON THE DOOR POP UP, HOWEVER, THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR WOULD NOT RELEASE. I WOULD BE STUCK INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THIS PROBLEM ALWAYS SEEMED TO FOLLOW WASHING THE VEHICLE. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE LATCH AND CABLE ASSEMBLY FAILED AND REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED.*AK
IN ATTEMPTING TO OPEN THE TRUNK WITH THE REMOTE OR FROM INSIDE THE VEHILCE, THE TRUNK WILL SOMETIMES NOT RELEASE. OTHER TIMES THE TRUNK WILL NOT CATCH WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CLOSE. IN ORDER TO GET THE LID TO CATCH, IT WOULD REQUIRE PRESSING THE TRUNK RELEASE BUTTON ON THE KEY MULTIPLE TIMES. AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS BACK TO DEALER 5 TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE GENERAL MODULE WAS REPLACED, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE UNLOCK SIGNAL FROM THE GENERAL MODULE WAS TOO SHORT. THE REPAIR WILL REQUIRE REPROGRAMMING THE GENERAL MODULE WITH UPDATED SOFTWARE. HOWEVER, NO FIX IS AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW AND NO SCHEDULE IS AVAILABLE FROM BMW. IN ADDITION, BOTH THE DEALER AND BMW CUSTOMER SERVICE ADMITTED THERE ARE REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM FROM OTHER 3-SERIES OWNERS.
