Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The shift shaft torsion spring found within the transmission broke, which made gear shifting difficult or even impossible for me. This presents an important safety hazard as it place the me in a dangerous situation I found myself unable to change gears altogether—definitely In While trying to figure out what went wrong I almost lose control of the motorcycle. I took it in to the BMW Motorrad dealership and was told it was denied for repair. Without even opening the transmission. It been in the shop for almost a month and no reason for the denied claim for warranty repair.

Faulty transmission torsion spring. My shift shaft torsion spring found within the transmission broke, which made the gear shifting difficult and even impossible. BMW Engineers without looking at the transmission denied the warranty issue. My motorcycle has been in the dealership service department for almost a month. The BMW mechanic "believes this to be the issue " but is not allowed to open the engine. This presents an important safety hazard as it may place the me and other riders in a dangerous situation: the shifter could feel loose and the rider could even find himself unable to change gears altogether—definitely not something you want to happen while cruising on the highway. In more extreme cases, the issue could cause the rider to lose control.

I AM A NEW BMW MOTORRAD CUSTOMER AS OF 6-9-18. I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2018 BMW MOTORCYCLE TO BE USED AS A MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND TO TRAVEL ON A RAMP ON THE BACK OF OUR MOTORHOME. I SELECTED THE BMW G310R AND PURCHASED IT. AFTER A WEEK WITH THE MOTORCYCLE AND ABOUT 50 MILES ON IT THERE BECAME AN ISSUE WHERE THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD NOT DROP BELOW 3,500-4,000 RPM'S. IN OR OUT OF GEAR IT WOULD NOT DROP BELOW THAT LEVEL. I RELUCTANTLY RODE IT FOR ABOUT ANOTHER 50 MILES TO SEE IF IT WOULD SETTLE IN AND IT DID NOT. I READ FORUMS ONLINE AND THERE WERE MANY ACCOUNTS OF THAT MODEL HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE THREAD LOCK ON THE IDLE ADJUSTMENT BACKING OUT. I HAD THE MOTORCYCLE DELIVERED TO AN AUTHORIZED BMW DEALER FOR REPAIR. AFTER BEING STRUNG ALONG FOR ABOUT 10 DAYS AND AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS TO FIND OUT WHAT THE ISSUE WAS, I WAS TOLD THEY BELIEVED THE THROTTLE BODY WAS BAD AND AFTER CHECKING WITH BMW CORPORATE THERE WERE NO REPLACEMENTS MANUFACTURED YET. AFTER A MONTH OF WAITING FOR THE PART TO BE MADE, MY MOTORCYCLE WAS RETURNED IN MID JULY, BUT, I WAS TOLD IT WOULD NEED TO COME BACK IN THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST FOR A RECALL OF A DEFECTIVE KICKSTAND THAT WOULD NEED A PLATE ADDED TO GIVE STABILITY. THEN ON 7-30 ABOUT TWO WEEKS AFTER HAVING IT BACK, I WAS CALLED BY BMW AND WAS TOLD THAT BMW NEEDED TO BUY BACK MY MOTORCYCLE BECAUSE THE FRAME WAS FRACTURED AND IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. TO BE HONEST, I WAS HORRIFIED AND ANGERED THAT THIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO ME AND I HAD BEEN RIDING A MOTORCYCLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES WITHOUT KNOWING THE FRAME WAS BROKEN. THAT IS NOT A DECISION ANYONE SHOULD HAVE MADE FOR ME. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD IMMEDIATELY THAT THIS MOTORCYCLE IS POTENTIALLY UNSAFE, AND THIS DEALER AND BMW MOTORRAD ELECTED TO NOT SAY ANYTHING FOR WEEKS EVEN THOUGH BOTH PARTIES KNEW, AS BMW CORPORATE WAS INVOLVED IN THE REPAIR OF MY MOTORCYCLE FOR WEEKS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The electrical system of BMW vehicles has been subject to an ongoing development process over the last few years. This has led to increased demands being placed on the battery. This document covers important information for the dealer on how to handle “discharged battery” complaints.

There could be damage to wires going to and from the crankshaft sensor which potentially causes engine misfiring or stalling.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
