Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

  • Fuel system2100.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

I FOUND A 4 FT DIAMETER PUDDLE OF GASOLINE ON MY GARAGE FLOOR. THE AIR IN THE GARAGE WAS ALSO VERY THICK WITH GASOLINE FUMES. I NOTICED A STEADY DRIPPING FROM THE BMW MOTORCYCLE AS THE SOURCE OF THE GASOLINE, WHICH HAD BEEN DRIPPING OVERNIGHT. I FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE CAUGHT THIS ISSUE BEFORE THE GAS IGNITED AND BURNED THE MOTORCYCLE AND POSSIBLY THE GARAGE. THERE WAS NO WAY TO STOP THE DRIPPING AND SO I REMOVED THE FAIRING THAT COVERS THE ENGINE (NOT A SIMPLE JOB) AND FOUND ONE OF THE PLASTIC FUEL DISCONNECTS HAD BROKEN AND WAS LEAKING GAS. UPON INSPECTING THE FITTING, I FOUND THAT A PLASTIC MALE QUICK DISCONNECT FUEL FITTING HAD BROKEN CLEANLY, IF EXPOSED TO FULL SYSTEM PRESSURE, GASOLINE WOULD HAVE GUSHED ONTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE MOTOR AND MY RIGHT LEG HAD I ATTEMPTED TO START THE CYCLE, IN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, I FIND IT IS VERY COMMONPLACE. THERE IS AN ACTION THAT DEALERS ARE SUPPOSED TO TAKE TO "INSPECT" THE FITTINGS AND REPLACE IF LEAKING. MY CYCLE WAS IN FOR SERVICE AT AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AT 8211 MILES. LESS THAN 500 MILES PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE INSPECTION SOLUTION DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AS THE FITTING FAILED SUDDENLY AND CATASTROPHICALLY. UNTIL THAT POINT, THEY MAY NOT LEAK. MINE SHOWED NO EVIDENCE OF LEAKING UNTIL IT FAILED COMPLETELY. ALSO, THE WAY THE FUEL LINES ARE SECURED PLACES BENDING STRESS ON THE FITTINGS THAT MAY ENCOURAGE THE BREAKING OF THE MALE FITTING AT THE NARROW DIAMETER OF THE CONNECTOR WHERE THE PLASTIC IS VERY THIN. GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE FAILURE, ITS FREQUENCY, AND THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF PUMPING FUEL AT FULL CAPACITY ONTO THE RIDER AND HOT ENGINE, I FEEL THE INSPECTION SOLUTION IS INADEQUATE AND ALL OF THESE PLASTIC FITTINGS SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH THE METAL FITTING THAT IS NOW BEING USED ON LATE MODELS. *TR

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

MC610107

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

There is a possibility of the "EWS" (electronic immobilizer) error message being displayed in the instrument cluster of the K 1200 GT (K44). If this occurs the engine will not start.

MC460807

EQUIPMENT; STRUCTURE

Manufacturing tolerances between the center stand and the main frame can result in excessive endplay of the center-stand pivot mount.

MC000521

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

One of the following situations can occur when connecting to BN2000 motorcycles: 1. The installed control units cannot be found when reading out with ISTA. 2. Control units initially communicate after connecting to the vehicle, but communication later stops.

MC55297495

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Vehicle battery not charged despite the battery charger being connected to the on-board socket (manufactured before 2009)Headlights and rear lights light up intermittently despite the ignition being switched off and the battery charger being connected to the on-board socket.

MC650109

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:OWNERS/SERVICE/OTHER MANUAL

IT is no longer necessary to place a PMP coded part order to obtain a Repair Enabling code

MC64010520

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL

Incorrect tire pressure appears in the instrument cluster. Contamination or obstruction of the RDC sensor.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
