FUEL LINE QUICK DISCONNECT FAILED AS VEHICLE SLOWED FOR STOPPING AT INTERSECTION. FUEL UNDER PRESSURE FROM RUNNING ENGINE WAS RELEASED ONTO THE ENGINE, THE ROAD SURFACE AND DRIVER'S RIGHT LEG. NO WARNING, SOUND OR LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, JUST STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE UNTIL I LOOKED DOWN AND SAW THE FUEL WETTING EVERYTHING. THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON FAILURE AND IS WELL DOCUMENTED ON THE BMWLT.COM FORUM, INVOLVING HUNDREDS OF THESE AND SIMILAR MODEL BMW MOTORCYCLES. THESE OEM QUICK DISCONNECTS ARE MADE OF PLASTIC AND CANNOT WITHSTAND COMMON USAGE. REPAIR IS COMMONLY MADE WITH ALL METAL PARTS OF THE SAME DESIGN. FIRES HAVE BEEN REPORTED FROM THIS FAILURE, WITH TOTAL LOSS OF THE VEHICLE REPORTED. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A LIFE-SAFETY ISSUE WHICH THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE OF, BUT IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING, AND A RECALL OF THIS PART IS ADVISABLE. *TR
BMW 2004 K1200LT MOTORCYCLE FUEL LINE QUICK RELEASE FITTING BROKE SPRAYING FUEL ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING MADE OUT OF PLASTIC AND WILL BREAK BMW SAID THERE IS NO RECALL THIS IS A POOR DESIGN AND WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS 2004 BMW K1200LT MOTORCYCLE. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS IN A PARKED POSITION WHEN THE CONTACT OBSERVED AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF FUEL LEAKING. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE FUEL LINE. THE ORIGINAL FUEL LINE WAS MADE OF PLASTIC AND IT WAS REPLACED WITH A STEEL LINE. IN ADDITION, THE THROTTLE CABLE DISENGAGED FROM THE ENGINE WHILE TRAVELING IN TRAFFIC. THERE WAS AN ESTIMATED COST OF $900.00 FOR THE MOTORCYCLE SERVICE REPAIR. IT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED . THE CONTACT HAD CONCERNS OF THE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD. THE VIN WAS REJECTED FROM THE SYSTEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000. UPDATED 10/13/09. *LJ UPDATED 10/13/09
