The defect: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2026 840i, 840i xDrive, 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, and 2024-2026 750e xDrive vehicles. The connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential may become damaged, possibly resulting in a loss of power to the rear wheels or a vehicle rollaway.
The risk: An unexpected loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. In addition, a damaged driveshaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
The remedy: Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential, and apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 2, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning October 2, 2026.

On most modern BMW models (with Hot V V8 engines like the N/S 63) the coolant tank that is supposed to last at least the lifetime of the vehicle, only lasts about 40,000 Miles before cracking. The main issue is that the tank sits over the engine, which when coolant leaks, it will leak into the injectors causing engine misfires. There is no warning to the issue until you have a low coolant, but at that point, the coolant has already dripped into your engine. Not only this but anti freeze can cause corrosion to metal, plastic and all the wiring. This can lead from a $400 tank to a 4 figure engine repair with no early warning signs until too late. Also environmentally, dripping antifreeze everywhere is not good…

I have had two separate incidents of cracked wheels. I drive the vehicle on normal roadways and have had no impacts with curbs, debris or significant road hazards. The wheels show no signs of any impact or damage, just a crack. Of course the cracked wheels result in a rapid loss of tire pressure. BMW will not warranty the wheels and replacement of each has cost me $800. I feel the wheels were obviously not engineered properly to withstand the load and forces of normal highway driving. The First cracked wheel was in November of 2023 - right front. The most recent was August 2024, left rear. The vehicle had approx 30,000 miles at the first incident and most recently 38,000 miles for the second incident.
