What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2007 BMW R 1200 Gs, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
When starting the bike, suddenly fuel started dripping down onto the front wheel and onto the exhaust. I noticed the fuel on the suction side (right side) of the gas tank pooling up and spraying out. Upon disassembly, the male 90 degree fuel quick disconnect (replacement part number BMW 13537674765) came apart when trying to release the hose from the female coupling. Replacing the connector and the clamp resolved the issue and fuel is no longer leaking. The last time this area was serviced was in 2014 when one of the other fuel tank recalls was completed and a reinforcement ring was installed on the flange at this location to prevent the flange itself from cracking, but in this instance it was the fitting itself. Called BMW motorcycles or Jacksonville (Florida ) and they indicated there is no warranty / recall/ service bulletin for this repair and I was able to purchase the part and perform the replacement.
THE FUEL PUMP ON THE MOTORCYCLE IS LEAKING AND SPRAYING GAS ALL OVER ME WHEN I DRIVE
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
BRAKE FAILURE WARNING, NO SPEEDOMETER, NO BRAKE LIGHTS, NO ODOMETER, BATTERY DIES. THE ABS UNIT HAS FAILED HAPPENED UPON KEY ON WITHOUT STARTING VEHICLE.
ABS CONTROL SHUT ITSELF OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RIDE, RESULTING IN REDUCED BRAKING CAPABILITY AND REAR WHEEL LOCK. AFTER TURNING OFF THE ENGINE, ABS TURNED BACK ON, BUT AFTER COUPLE OF MILES SHUT ITSELF OFF AGAIN. EVERY TIME THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON, THE ABS ACTIVATES ITSELF, BUT THEN SHUTS ITSELF OFF DURING THE RIDE, REDUCING THE BRAKING CAPABILITY OF THE MOTORCYCLE.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVE SHAFT FAILURE WHICH TOOK OUT THE SWING ARM WHILE DOING SPEED OF 35-45 MPH ON BACK COUNTRY ROAD. IF ON HIGHWAY OR INCREASES SPEED, INCIDENT MAY CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE
WHILE TRAVELING ON I-64 NEAR MILE MARKER 45 I SUDDENLY DEVELOPED A STRONG VIBRATION IN THE REAR AND A PRONOUNCED WOBBLE AFFECTING CONTROL. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD A TIRE BLOWOUT BUT MY TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR INDICATED NO FAILURE. I THEN THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE ROADBED RELATED AND SHIFTED LANES WITH NO CHANGE. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE ROAD AND INSPECTED THE BIKE. THE TIRES APPEARED FINE AND HAD PLENTY OF PRESSURE. THERE WERE NO OBVIOUS LEAKS OR SYSTEM BREAKS SO I DECIDED TO TRY AGAIN. AS SOON AS I STARTED OFF THE VIBRATION AND STRONG WOBBLE RESUMED. I PARKED THE BIKE AND CALLED FOR A TOW TRUCK. THE DEALER HAS INSPECTED THE BIKE AND REPORTED A FAILURE OF THE DRIVE SHAFT. *TT

UPON TRYING TO START MY 2007 R1200GS I GOT AN ERROR MESSAGE ON THE CLUSTER "EWS". A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH REPORTED THAT THE ERROR CODE MEANT "IGNITION KEY ANTENNA ERROR". SOME FORUMS READING REVEALED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY WITH THE 2007 R1200GS, BUT CAN HAPPEN TO OTHER MODEL YEARS AND OTHER BMW BIKES TOO. THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO START THE BIKE. I HAD TO BE TOWED. *JS
THE PLASTIC FUEL PUMP FLANGE (PLATE THAT SEALS THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK AND IS THE CONNECTIONS FOR THE FUEL PUMP) HAS DEVELOPED CRACKS IN THE "BOSS" FITTING FOR THE QUICK DISCONNECT HOSE FITTINGS. AFTER APPLYING A FIX FOR THIS, I'VE NOTICED WHAT APPEARS TO BE A HAIRLINE CRACK IN THE PLASTIC PLATE ITSELF, JUST BELOW THE METAL SCREW CAP RING. GAS WEEPS FROM THIS CRACK FAST ENOUGH TO FILL THE RECESS OF THE FUEL PUMP LID AND BEGINS DRIPPING DOWN THE INBOARD SIDE OF THE GAS TANK ONTO THE CYLINDER HEAD AND EXHAUST. FAILURE OF THE PARTS OF THE FUEL SYSTEM RESULTING IN LEAKS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS BOTH A POTENTIAL FIRE ISSUE, AS WELL AS A VERY SPECIFIC FUEL SPILLAGE/ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE. *TR

Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
CRACKS IN THE PLASTIC TOP FLANGE OF THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY RESULTED IS A SPRAY OF FUEL WHEN SYSTEM UNDER OPERATING PRESSURE (IE. ENGINE RUNNING). THIS 4 YEAR OLD MOTORCYCLE IS CURRENTLY NOT TO SAFE TO OPERATE AND IS OUT OF COMMISSION UNTIL TRAILERED TO A REPAIR FACILITY. THE FUEL SPRAY SOURCE APPEARS AROUND THE FEMALE THREADED 'HUB' OF THE FLANGE THAT ACCEPTS THE MALE THREADED 'QUICK DISCONNECT' OF THE FUEL LINE. THE FAILURE (OR CRACKING) APPEARS TO BE SPONTANEOUS, AS NO PRIOR EVIDENCE (GASOLINE ODOR) WAS NOTICED. THIS MOTORCYCLE HAS BEEN DEALER SERVICED REGULARLY, AND IS GARAGED AT ALL TIMES (DESERT S.W.). THE BIKE IS PAMPERED AND HAS NEVER BEEN ABUSED. I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE HOW A RELATIVELY LOW TIME, CRITICALLY IMPORTANT COMPONENT HAS FAILED. AN INTERNET SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT FOR BMW MOTORCYCLES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW R1200 GS MOTORCYCLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOW BEAM RUNNING LIGHTS BURNED OUT EXTREMELY QUICK. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO SEE THE ROADWAY BECAUSE THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR SPORADICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE BULBS, WHICH THEY RECOMMENDED THE CONTACT REPLACE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 43,000.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
