2017 BMW X5 Fuel system Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the fuel system system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Fuel system reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I am writing to formally document two significant incidents involving the complete failure of the high-pressure fuel system in my BMW vehicle, VIN [XXX] , which have raised concerns about the reliability of this component. On [XXX], while navigating city street traffic, my vehicle, with 57,376 miles, experienced a total loss of power, resulting in the vehicle stalling in the left lane. The vehicle was towed to an authorized BMW dealership, where the entire high-pressure fuel system was diagnosed and replaced under warranty. As the second owner of this vehicle, I acquired it from my neighbor, the original owner. Upon reviewing the complete service records provided by the previous owner, I discovered that a nearly identical issue occurred at 39,066 miles. The service documentation states, "Client reports that while driving, the vehicle lost power and stalled." At that time, the high-pressure fuel system was also fully replaced. Further investigation revealed that BMW issued a safety recall notice between these two incidents, acknowledging potential failures in the high-pressure fuel pumps. However, the recall indicated that no remedy was available at the time. I've attached all the service records for both incidents and BMW North America's letter. I was driving approximately 30 mph. As I continued to accelerate the fuel system light came on and the car shut off in the road. I had to have it towed to the dealership as it would not start. Gas fumes could also be smelled coming from the car. Once looked at by BMW service center I was told “ EKPS and the fuel pump are intermittently failing. I was able to able to verify the concern briefly. Vehicle may lose fuel pressure randomly. Upon removing rear seats and inspecting harness, I found the wires going into the EKPS to be burnt. The wires from the EKPS to the low pressure fuel pump will also need to be replaced.” I did research and saw that this was recall on other years of this model. Also the middle back seatbelt does not work. Also even after multiple alignments my car still pulls aggressively to the right causing near collisions and off roaring.

Vehicle stopped three times on highway. There is an issue with fuel injection. I am repairing the same thing every year and it is stopping every year on highway. They keep on repairing/replacing the module and I still get the problem. I missed a big rear collision because of this. This model has so many issues. Suspension broke. So many issues with gas pump. being it a first generation hybrid, it can cause threat to so many people if we let these vehicles be on road.

I brought my 2017 X5 xDrive40e to my local dealer (Ray Catena in White Plains NY) after getting a ‘Drivetrain Malfunction” Error. After several weeks at the dealer, and thousands of dollars in repairs, I’m being told today that: -The car needs a new Electric Drive… cost $12,000 -The replaced electric drive may not solve the issue, which might be the transmission.. replacement cost $16,000 So almost $30k to perhaps solve the issue on a car with a $19,000 value per Kelly Bluebook. And this is a known issue for Hybrid X5s per multiple BMW owner websites.. Here is one: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1887640 My dealer is telling me that the value of this car is currently zero ($0.00) which I find to be absolutely ridiculous.

Hi, I have bought BMW x5 2017 from certified dealer in Nov 2020. From the beginning, vehicle is giving me problems. I spoke with BMW customer care and they are not helping me much. Below are the problems that vehicle has given me. They are so many other problems but I am noting the major problems. 1. Vibration during acceleration 2. The rear suspension got broke 3. Vehicle stopped on the road while traveling with an infant. Problem they said is fuel is not pumping into engine. They confirmed tank has 3/4th of gas. So that’s the problem with the vehicle. - they left us on the road for 4-5 hours until they tow the car. - my family including 3 months old baby has to get shelter inside a gas station for almost 12 hours until I get a rental car because they didn’t give loaner vehicle or not provided any help to rescue my family to bring to safe location. 4. The air suspension completely broke while traveling from Baton Rouge. Which caused back pain problem to my wife who recently has c-section. I am still dealing with her back pain treatment after that. And they took more than 20 days to repair and give the car back. I got an old Dodge Journey as a loaner from rental agency. Why do I need to pay for luxury car if I have to drive a Dodge Journey. 5. During the problem 3, BMW service center said fuel wasn't pumping into the engine and they said they fixed the issue. Again on August 14th 2022, vehicle was broken due to fuel pumping issue while I was in a city which is 2 hours from where I live. vehicle stopped on highway without any notice. They could have saved me and my family lot of stress and health issues if they supported us well and inspected the vehicle before selling us. They looted our money and played with us emotionally and caused physical and mental damage by doing it. I had to rescue my 3 months old baby because of this vehicle which stopped on high way during hottest season of summer mid June 2021. Your help is much appreciated in this regard.

On July 30, 2021, my 2017 BMW X5 35d, which had only about 49,000 miles on it and which had been serviced only six weeks before, died without warning. My son and I could have been killed. The car went into Park and had to be towed on a flatbed to the dealer. After 5 days of no word, the dealer falsely accused me of putting gasoline in my diesel vehicle. The dealer eventually determined that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed, which caused exactly the problem listed in BMW's July 29, 2021 recall notice to its dealers: it caused metal fragments to contaminate the entire fuel system. BMW initially advised me that it had no "recall remedy," but when it did, it would replace the fuel pump but would not repair the nearly $13,000 in damage to the fuel system that the fuel pump failure caused. BMW eventually relented and advised it will complete all repairs caused by the fuel pump failure. But it has declined to reimburse me for the "overage" charges I've incurred in towing the vehicle to the dealer and in connection with the rental vehicle they obtained for me. And of course, not a single apology for the harrowing experience that could have resulted in our deaths, nor for the considerable inconvenience caused by this defect that BMW has known about for years.

THE CAR STOPPED WITHOUT ANY WARNING 3 TIME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING MY WIFE AND KIDS INSIDE THE CAR. I CONSIDER VERY LUCKY THIS HAPPENED ON COUNTY ROAD TWO TIME AND ONES IN THE SHOPPING CENTER PARKING LOT, INSTEAD OF MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE SECOND TIME THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH GAUGES. LAST TIME IT HAPPENED WAS 11/13 WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH THE DAUGHTER TO DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT, GAS READING SHOWS ABOVE 1/4 TANK AND 146 MILES REMAINING (I HAVE PICTURES OF THE CLUSTER). BUT THE CAR ABRUPTLY STOP TWITHOUGHT ANY WARNING WHICH WILL BE A DEADLY SITUATION IF HAPPENED IN THE HIGHWAY. THE REASON FOR IT TO STOP WAS NO GAS IN THE TANK THOUGH IT GIVES A READING OF OVER 1/4 TANK 146 MILES REMAINING. MY LAST VISIT TO THE DEALER WAS ABOUT A MONTH BACK AND I WAS TOLD THEY REPLACED THE GAS TANK AND THE SENSOR INSIDE THE TANK WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER VEHICLE WARRANTY. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS CAR, I HAVE REPORTED THE ISSUES BMW NA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE CAR IS WITH BMW OF ROCKVILLE.

WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND STALLED. SHE HAD JUST TURNED OFF THE HIGHWAY, AND ONTO A SIDE STREET. SHE WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND HAD TO BE TOWED. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RE-START AND WOULD NOT ENGAGE TO NEUTRAL, SO THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HAD TO USE SKID BLOCKS. BMW INSPECTED AND FOUND THE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED AND CONTAMINATED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WITH SWARF. THIS LEAVES THE DRIVER AND VEHICLE IN A DANGEROUS POSITION AS THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY STALLS WITH NO PRIOR WARNING.

RECALL 18V755000 EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION MODULE COOLER LEAKS AND MIXES WITH DIESEL SOOT CAUSING MELTING OF THE THIS SPECIFIC RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. NUMEROUS CALLS HAVE BEEN MADE TO BMW TO SEE THE STATUS OF THE REPAIR, BUT THEY CANNOT/WIIL NOT/DO NOT PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION. I THINK THAT 6 MONTHS IS SUFFICIENT TIME TO MAKE A PART AVAILABLE FOR A SAFETY RECALL. WHEN WE SPEAK TO BMW THEY ARE NOT FORTHCOMING AT ALL ON ANY TIMELINE. QUITE FRANKLY, 8 MONTHS WITH AN OPEN SAFETY RECALL IS NOT OK BY ANY MEASURE. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT A REASONABLE TIMELINE WOULD BE. BUT I WOULD THINK 3 MONTHS MAX MAKES SENSE. THIS IS NOT CURRENTLY MY VEHICLE. IT IS A VEHICLE I AM ATTEMPTING TO ASSUME THE LEASE ON. BMW WILL NOT ALLOW THE TRANSACTION TO OCCUR SINSE THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL. BUT THEY ARE LESS THAN HELPFUL. CURRENT LESSOR TRULY WANTS TO LET ME ASSUME THE LEASE. I AM HOPEFUL THERE CAN BE A SOLUTION EFFECTED HERE.

WE WERE IN OUR 2017 BMW X5 DIESEL DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 14S IN SANTA CLARITA, CA ON THE 17TH OF NOV 2017 AT 1:30PM . ACCELERATED TO PASS A CAR, FELT A SUDDEN SURGE, DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION INDICATION CAME ON, INDICATED SAFE TO PROCEED AT A MODERATE SPEED. ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE, NO RESPONSE. WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE RIGHT MEDIAN BETWEEN THE FREEWAY AND THE ON-RAMP AWAY FROM ON-COMING CARS. BMW CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND WAS NOT ABLE TO START. CONTACTED BMW ASSIST, WAS INFORMED THAT IT WOULD BE ABOUT A 3 TO 4 HOUR WAIT FOR THE TOW VEHICLE. TOW VEHICLE ARRIVED AT 2:45 PM, UNABLE TO PUT X5 IN NEUTRAL, HAD TO USE SKID PLATES TO GET X5 ONTO THE TOW VEHICLE. GOT THE X5 TO THE DEALERSHIP AT 3:20PM, INFORM THE CONSULTANT WHAT HAPPENED AND LEFT THE X5 THERE. CONSULTANT CALLED ON MONDAY AND INFORMED US THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WAS THE ISSUE AND THAT BRASS SHAVING FROM THE FUEL PUMP CONTAMINATED THE SYSTEM, INFORMED US THAT THEY WERE GOING TO REPLACE ANYTHING FROM THE BACK TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE THAT WAS EFFECTED BY THE FUEL PUMP.
