2013 Cadillac Xts Engine Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the engine system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Engine reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

IN THE LAST TWO YEARS THE CAR RANDOMLY HAS A COMPLETE POWER FAILURE AND LOSS OF POWER AND ELECTRICAL WHILE DRIVING. WITHOUT WARNING THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN AND ALL LIGHTS, DASH PANEL, POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, ETC COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN REQUIRING THE CAR TO COAST TO A STOP AND PUT INTO PARK AT WHICH TIME THE CAR WILL RESTART. THIS HAS HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY 10 TIMES IN THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME IT WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE BATTERY AND REPLACED BUT OCCURRED AGAIN A MONTH LATER AND THEY HAD NO CODES TO INDICATE WHAT WAS HAPPENING. ON TWO OCCASIONS THE CAR LOST POWER IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND WOULDN'T START FOR 10 MINUTES AT WHICH TIME IT SUDDENLY HAD POWER WITH THE RADIO AND LIGHTS TURNING ON AGAIN. LOOKING ONLINE I'VE FOUND NUMEROUS ISSUES SIMILAR TO MINE WITH 2013 MODELS BUT NO FIXES HAVE BEEN FOUND. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HAVE HAPPEN DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND SUDDENLY HAVE NO POWER, ESPECIALLY WITHOUT POWER STEERING OR BRAKES REQUIRING LONGER STOPPING DISTANCES, AND TIME TO ATTEMPT TO STEER TO THE SHOULDER.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 CADILLAC XTS. WHILE COMING TO A STOP AT 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE SPUTTERED WITHOUT WARNING AND STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BATTERY CABLES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. A FEW TIMES, THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER AND WOULD LOCK THE CONTACT IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000.

WHILE TRAVELING IN PARKING LOT, ANOTHER CAR PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME. AS I TRIED TO BRAKE TO AVOID A COLLISION, I NOTICED IT WAS TAKING AN INORDINATE AMOUNT OF BRAKE PRESSURE TO SLOW DOWN VEHICLE. LOOKED AT TACHOMETER AND RPM'S WERE OVER 4000 IN DRIVE AND NOT LOSING SPEED. APPLIED BRAKE PRESSURE WITH BOTH FEET ATTEMPTING TO SLOW VEHICLE DOWN. HAD TO SLAM VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND TAP ON ACCELERATOR PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES TO RETURN ENGINE TO IDLE RPM'S. TOOK VEHICLE TO CADILLAC DEALER WHO ADVISED COMPUTER SAID NOTHING OCCURRED. THIS SAFETY DEFECT OCCURRED AGAIN IN APRIL 2014 WITH SAME RESULTS. THE DEALERSHIP INSTALLED A COMPUTER MONITOR ON VEHICLE AFTER SECOND INCIDENT, WHICH HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED. CADILLAC HAS BEEN SENT TWO LETTERS REGARDING THIS INCIDENT AND HAS TAKEN NO ACTION EXCEPT TO ADVISE THEM IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I REALLY AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SERIOUS MALFUNCTION OCCURRING AGAIN AS IT MAY RESULT IN UNFORTUNATE RESULTS. *TR
