1992 Chevrolet Beretta Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 1992 Chevrolet Beretta, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

NHTSA ID 10055886 · filed Apr 1, 2004

WHILE DRIVING A COLUMN OF SMOKE DEVELOPED FROM THE TOP OF THE STEERING COLUMN, DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER. THIS OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE AFTER NOTICING THAT THE TURN SIGNAL DID NOT SEEM TO OPERATE PROPERLY DURING A TURN. THE SMOKE WAS ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY THE SMELL OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. IMMEDIATELY STOPPING THE CAR AND TURNING OFF THE IGNITION STOPPED THE SMOKE. THE CAR WAS THEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 5-10 MILES TO THE DEALER WITH NO FURTHER SMOKE. THE CHEVROLET DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH SHORTING OUT. THE SWITCH WAS THEN REPLACED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR REPORTED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL REGARDING THIS FAILURE EVEN THOUGH THE TURN SIGNAL FAILED IN SUCH AS WAY THAT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN DANGER TO OCCUPANTS OF THE CAR. OBVIOUSLY, THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT USE A FAIL-SAFE DESIGN WHEN THIS CAR WAS BUILT.*AK
