Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

What owners report

Complaints grouped by the component NHTSA recorded

  • Brakes240.0%
  • Body & structure120.0%
  • Engine120.0%
  • Transmission120.0%

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

Safety recalls

No recalls in our database for this model year

That does not guarantee a specific vehicle is unaffected — recalls are issued against VINs, and new campaigns are announced regularly. Check a VIN on NHTSA.gov.

THROUGH NORMAL USE OR OVER TIME, THE BRAIDED EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE CAN RUST ON MODELS EQUIPPED WITH SUCH CAUSING THE CABLE TO FAIL RESULTING IN STRETCHING AND IN SOME CASES BREAK. THE SUBSEQUENT RESULT OF THIS FAILURE COULD RESULT IN AN INABILITY TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN THE EVENT OF THE NORMAL SYSTEM FAILURE, OR IN THE EVENT THE VEHICLE IS PARKED ON AN INCLINE OR DECLINE. *TR

JUST FOUND THIS WEB SITE, SO SUBMITTING COMPLAINT SINCE I CANNOT MAKE PROGRESS WITH DEALER... HAVE A 2000 S10 TRUCK THAT I BOUGHT NEW AND HAVE TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF IT. STARTING IN 2004 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION STARTED NO SHIFTING CORRECTLY. WHEN AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IT WILL NOT DOWNSHIFT CORRECTLY UNTIL YOU COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. WHEN IT HAPPENS FLOOR BOARDS GET VERY HOT AND HEAT UP CABIN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. DEALERSHIP READS THE CODE AND SAYS WE CAN REBUILD FOR $2300 OR PUT A REMANUFACTURED ONE FOR $2600. THEY TOLD ME THEY DO NOT REPAIR THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM AS THEY ARE ONLY TRAINED TO DO THE COMPLETE REBUILD. THE TRUCK ONLY HAD 50,000 MILES WHEN THIS STARTED AND STILL A NEW TRUCK TO ME, EVEN THOUGH WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. I AM QUITE DISAPPOINTED TO SPEND $20K ON A NEW TRUCK ONLY TO HAVE TRANSMISSION GO SO QUICKLY. AND THE WARRANTY ON A NEW ONE IS ONLY 60K MILES, WHICH APPEARS TO BE THE LIFE OF IT ANYWAY. AND EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS, ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND HAVE TO PAY DEALER $80 TO HAVE CODE CLEARED. CANNOT GET YEARLY SAFETY INSPECTION WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON..A REAL EXPENSE AND HASSLE. RESALE VALUE IS SO LOW NOW WITH TRANS PROBLEM THAT IT JUST SITS IN THE DRIVEWAY. I HAVE SINCE BOUGHT A NEWER VW THAT I AM HAPPY WITH. I WILL NOT BE BUYING ANOTHER CHEVROLET AGAIN. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE TRANS PROBLEMS BUT GM WILL NOT PAY OR RECALL THE VEHICLES TO HAVE FIXED. *NM

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
