2012 Chevrolet Sonic Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I purchased this car 2 years ago and it has caused me absolutely nothing but trouble. We have replaced the fan 4 times (twice due to the resistor thats part of the fan failed), headgasket job, intercooler punctures (once inward, once outward), failed valve cover, intake maniford, turbo seals twice, failing check values, new relays for the fan (twice), another drive belt, and now I go outside and theres a puddle of coolant under my car. I have sunk over $8,000 into this car and it has been the worst financial decision ever. Why do the parts keep failing? Why isnt there a heat gage in the dang car so I know its too hot before the light comes on?

Reviving the p2138 code for throttle/accelerator sensor. Still getting code after replacing 3 accelerator peddles. Possible manufacture issue with wiring that water gets into connectors shorting out that system

NHTSA ID 11671614 · filed Jul 7, 2025

We have had to deal with severe overheating issues and failing parts our entire ownership of this vehicle, both of which then cause other parts to fail, as the parts are so poorly made and heat sensitive. We have replaced the turbocharger (twice), intake manifold + valve cover (twice), catalytic converter, the radiator (THREE TIMES), the cooling fan (twice), the MAF sensor (twice), and much more. All of this has been done over the course of 18months. This has easily been the most expensive car we have ever owned due to the constant repairs, all of which has been because of Failing Parts and overheating.

NHTSA ID 11520856 · filed May 7, 2023

I was experiencing issues with the transmission on my vehicle. I lost control and when it stop abruptly in a ditch after hitting a fallen limb of a tree the airbags did not deploy. Since this incident I have extreme pain in neck, dizziness, and weakness in both my arms. My vehicle is not listed as part of the recalls and the violent stop of my vehicle upon hitting the object was severe enough to snap both tierod ends yet airbags did not deploy. I have significant injuries as a result and a wrecked car that I feel was hard to control due to the problematic acceleration of transmission

MY CAR KEEPS SHUTTING COMPLETELY OFF EVEN WHILE DRIVING, THE RADIO COME ON AND OFF BY ITSELF AND NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHY, THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS I BE DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AND THE CAR SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC

NHTSA ID 11279699 · filed Nov 12, 2019

WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON A TWO LANE ROAD AT NIGHT, APPLIED BRAKES TO AVOID ANIMAL IN ROAD. CONDITIONS WERE CLEAR AND ROAD WAS DRY. THERE WAS PLENTY OF TIME TO SLOW TO AVOID ANIMAL SO THIS WAS NOT A PANIC STOP. UPON APPLICATION OF BRAKES, HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. DASH LIGHTS STAYED ON MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE OUT OF THE VEHICLE. APPLIED BRAKES WITH MORE URGENCY AND ALL FOUR WHEELS LOCKED. VEHICLE SKIDDED STRAIGHT UNTIL THE RIGHT TIRES MADE CONTACT WITH THE RIGHT SHOULDER. THE CAR THEN SPUN COUNTER CLOCKWISE BACK ONTO THE ROADWAY, ACROSS BOTH LANES, AND CAME TO REST ON THE SHOULDER OF THE ONCOMING LANE (APPROXIMATELY ONE AND ONE-HALF REVOLUTIONS). SKID MARKS ON HIGHWAY CONFIRMED THE WHEEL LOCK AND THE SPIN. CAR WAS SHUT OFF AND RE-STARTED AND ALL SYSTEMS WORKED FINE. UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.

ON JUNE 19, 2013, AFTER PICKING UP MY 5 YR OLD GRANDSON FROM SUMMER CAMP, WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO THE PARK. I AM DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY GRANDSON OPENS THE DOOR! WHILE THE LOCKS ENGAGE WHEN PUT INTO GEAR, HE WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR! NEEDLESS TO SAY, I FLIPPED OUT! THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! MY DOORS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LOCKED!!! I FIND THIS VERY DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE FOR ANYONE, ANY AGE! MY CAR DOES HAVE CHILD LOCKS, BUT WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO TURN THEM ON EVERY TIME SOMEONE GETS IN MY CAR WHEN MY LOCKS AUTOMATICALLY ENGAGE WHEN PUT IN GEAR!!!!!?????????? CHEVROLET HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE MAKE OF A VEHICLE AND THAT IS WHY I CHOSE TO BUY ONE. PLUS, THE SONIC WAS A WISE CHOICE FOR ME AT THE TIME BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING 60-75 MILES A DAY BACK AND FORTH TO WORK AND HOME. THEN MORE TRAVELING ON THE WEEKENDS TO MOBILE, AL TO VISIT FAMILY. AFTER THAT INCIDENT, PLEASE MARK MY WORD, THAT I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVY AGAIN, AND I WILL MAKE SURE THAT NO ONE ELSE DOES AS WELL. I WILL CONTACT MY LOCAL NEWS STATION AND HIRE AN ATTORNEY, IF I HAVE TO, MAKE CHEVY IMPROVE MY VEHICLE OR GIVE ME SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS SAFER FOR MY FAMILY! WHAT IF SOMETHING WERE TO HAPPEN TO MY GRANDSON? THEN WHAT? WHAT IF IT WERE YOU AND YOUR GRANDBABY OR SON OR DAUGHTER? YOU BEST BETTER BELIEVE THAT YOU WOULD HAVE THE BIGGEST LAWSUIT ON YOUR HANDS THAT YOU'VE EVER HAD TO WITNESS!!! AND I GUARANTEE THAT YOU STILL WILL HAVE ONE, IF THEY DON?T MAKE THIS RIGHT! I AM NOT ASKING FOR MONEY (THAT?S NOT WHAT I?M ABOUT), BUT SIMPLY ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT IS SAFER THAN THE CHEVY SONIC AND TO MAKE ALL CHEVY SONICS SAFER!!!! I AM APPALLED THAT CHEVY WOULD MAKE A VEHICLE THAT IS SO UNSAFE! *TR
