1996 Chevrolet Tahoe Steering Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the steering system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Steering reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR 4-WD PROBLEM, AND WHEN VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP IT HAD NO POWER STEERING. DEALER CALIMS FAILURE WAS DUE TO COLD WEATHER STARTS. POWER STEERING UNITS SHOULD NOT FAIL WITH ONLY 44000 MILES . COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF IT HAD FAILED WHILE ON THE ROAD. DEALER CHARGED $350.00 TO REPAIR AND DISMISSED CONCERN THAT THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. *AK

STEERING WENT COMPLETELY OUT TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF ~25/MPH. STEERING WHEEL JUST TURNED BUT TIRES DID NOT MOVE. WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT A MISSING NUT ON CENTER LINK TO PITMAN ARM. REPLACED NUT AND SET FRONT TORQUE TO CHEVROLET SPECIFICATIONS. I AM CONCERNED THAT CHEVROLET HAS NOT GIVEN ME A SUFFICIENT EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THE STEERING WENT OUT. I BELIEVE CHEVROLET IS NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM OCCURING IN OTHER TAHOE/SUBURBANS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A RECALL ON THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE, BECAUSE I WAS VERY LUCKY IN NOT CAUSING ANY ACCIDENTS OR FATALITIES.
