1999 Chevrolet Tahoe Body & structure Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the body or structure system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Body & structure reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST, WHICH TO DATE THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 73,000 MILES. THE RUST IS SO BAD I WILL PROBABLY STOP DRIVING, UNTIL I CAN FIND A GOOD FRAME. LARGE LAYERS ARE COMING OFF, AND CAN BE JUST CRUMBLED. THE REST OF THE TRUCK IS MINT, THE UNDER BODY STILL LOOKS NEW, THE FRAME IS OUCH!, NOT JUST LOCAL AREAS, THE WHOLE FRAME STRUCTURE.

THE SWAY BAR IN THE FRONT RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE OF MY 1999 CHEVROLET TAHOE BROKE WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE RIGHT ARM OF THE SWAY BAR TO HANG BY ITSELF WHILE THE REST OF THE SWAY BAR IS STILL CONNECTED THROUGH THE FRONT AND ACROSS TO THE LEFT FRONT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

MY 1999 CHEVY TAHOE WAS JUST DIAGNOSED WITH A FATAL CASE OF FRAME RUST. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND HAVE HAD IT MAINTAINED BY QUALIFIED AND CERTIFIED MECHANICS, AS REQUIRED. ON NOV. 23, 2009 I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR A SCHEDULED OIL CHANGE BEFORE I WENT ON A TRIP. THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE ALMOST RUSTED THROUGH AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE. THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE BRAKE LINES. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PUT ON THE LIFT THEY SAW THAT THE FRAME HAD SEVERE RUST THROUGHOUT. THE PLATE ON THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS SO BAD THAT THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT IT MAY RUST THROUGH. THE FINAL DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE VEHICLE MAY NOT BE SERVICEABLE IN ONE OR TWO YEARS. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 66,000 MILES AND IS ON OTHERWISE EXCELLENT CONDITION. I SAW THE RECALL ON THE SAME YEAR TACOMA TACOMA TRUCKS AND IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS THE SAME SYNDROME OF A TRUCK FRAME RUSTING OUT BEFORE IT SHOULD. I THINK THAT CHEVROLET SHOULD RECALL THESE VEHICLES THE SAME AS TOYOTA AND REMEDY THE PROBLEM. I INVESTED OVER $35,000 IN THIS VEHICLE AND I WOULD NOT HAVE PURCHASED IT IF I THOUGHT IT WOULD RUST OUT IN ONLY 10 YEARS OF SERVICE! I FEEL DEFRAUDED. *TR

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
