Owner-reported complaints naming the airbag system, filed with NHTSA
Data refreshed
Airbags reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights. Every record below is an owner-reported complaint about the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe submitted to NHTSA — not a confirmed defect, not a recall and not a manufacturer bulletin. 10 reports on file name it.

On 7/28 while driving my vehicle, the ABS and traction control light came on unexpectedly (the symbol with the car and squiggly line in front of it). Nothing is wrong with the vehicle for these lights to come on as I keep up with all maintenance and repairs to this suv seeing that im the only owner. Then the next day, I noticed my truck keeps accelerating uncontrollably and then out of nowhere, the brakes would activate as if i am driving on ice (its summer time, there is no snow or ice on the roads). This issue keeps happening and today I almost got in a car accident for my vehicle accelerating on its own and when I went to apply the brakes, it barely stop the car. My car has brand new brakes, brake fluid is new, etc. Next thing I see on my dashboard it said service the stablitrak. I went to do research on this and I found that this is a common issue with all GM cars that was made 2014 to 2019. I have a 2016 Chevy Tahoe LT and have never had any issues with .y vehicle until now. I read there was a recall on models like my truck and when I put in the VIN, it said there was no recall. This is fraud because I know me almost getting into an accident had something to do with the stablitrak and GM should fix this issue seeing that the programming of the power steering and other features is on GM's end, not mine. This is a very bad safety hazard and if it wasn't for me applying the emergency brake, me and the car I would have hit would have been in serious danger. I see that I am not the only person with this issue and a Chevy serviceman said that this is a common problem with vehicles like mine and they are not sure why there isn't a recall on the stablitrak. I have children and I am afraid to drive the vehicle because of mostly all electrical components have been disabled due to the faulty stablitrak. This is putting the safety of myself and my children at grave danger and risk and something has to be done for our safety

I purchased a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe on March 8, 2026, in [XXX] . After the sale, I discovered that the vehicle has serious undisclosed safety defects, including evidence that the airbag (Supplemental Restraint System) had previously deployed and was not properly repaired or restored to working condition, and were actually cut and removed from the vehicle and glued and covered up. This defect was not disclosed prior to purchase and represents a significant safety hazard. It is available for inspection. This put my safety and others at risk because if I had not noticed that the airbag system was not working and was removed and if I had been in a wreck who knows the injuries that me or somebody else could have sustained. The problem has not been confirmed or reproduced by anybody other than me I have physical documentation pictures and diagnostic reports showing the issue. The vehicle has not been inspected by police manufacturer or insurance as of yet but will be completed in the very near future. There was an airbag warning light on on the dash of the vehicle when I purchased it my assumption that it was just an error or a warning since I knew that the vehicle had been in a minor incident but I would’ve never thought that all of the airbags would’ve been cut out and hidden in the vehicle. Through my own investigation, I also located what appears to be the seller’s Facebook Marketplace account, where he has dozens of vehicles listed under a personal profile. This suggests he may be operating as an unlicensed vehicle dealer (curbstoning) and potentially selling multiple vehicles with undisclosed defects. I have attempted to resolve this matter directly by sending a formal demand letter and allowing time for response, but the seller has failed to respond or offer any resolution and has ceased communication. I have documentation and evidence including photos, videos, messages, and screenshots of vehicle listings that support these claims. WHILE TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65-70MPH (POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 65) MY 2016 CHEVROLET TAHOE SEEMED TO HAVE NO STEERING, SIMILAR TO HOW A STEERING WHEEL FEELS WHEN VEHICLE IS OFF, AS THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING OVER A KNOLL WITH A SLIGHT CURVE TO THE LEFT. THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED TO CHECK TO SEE IF VEHICLE WAS IN FACT STILL RUNNING, WHICH IT WAS, BUT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT MOVE. THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED AT WHICH TIME THE TAHOE DARTED LEFT INTO THE OTHER LANE WHERE ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING, CAUSING THAT VEHICLE TO HIT THE TAHOE IN THE DRIVERS SIDE BACK DOOR. THE TAHOE THEN CONTINUED BROADSIDE UNTIL IT BROKE FREE OF IMPACT WITH THE OTHER VEHICLE, AND TURNED BACKWARD INTO THE MEDIAN. THE TAHOE TRAVELLED BACKWARDS THRU THE MEDIAN FOR APPROXIMATELY 80FT AT WHICH TIME THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED TO THE FLOOR IN AN ATTEMPT TO KEEP THE TAHOE OUT OF NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC. THE TAHOE CAME OUT OF THE MEDIAN BROADSIDE, BACK INTO THE LEFT LANE & STOPPED. THE STEERING WHEEL NEVER MOVED DURING THIS ACCIDENT. THE STATE TROOPER SUGGESTED THAT THE FRONT WHEELS WERE LOCKED THE ENTIRE TIME BASED ON THE BLACK MARKS IN THE ROAD. ALSO, EVEN WITH A DIRECT SIDE IMPACT BY THE OTHER VEHICLE, THE SIDE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY.

I WAS DRIVING A 2016 CHEVY TAHOE ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET. MY CAR LOST ALL CONTROL OF STEERING AND BRAKES. WHILE DRIVING THE CAR VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND HIT A CAR, CONTINUED ON HITTING 2 MORE PARKED CARS, DROVE THRU SOMEONE'S LARGE HEDGES, AND WAS SECONDS AWAY FROM DRIVING INTO SOMEONE'S HOUSE BUT WAS STOPPED WHEN I HIT THE 2 PARKED CARS IN THE DRIVEWAY. MY AIRBAG ALSO DID NOT DEPLOY. TWO CARS INVOLVED WERE TOTALED. AGAIN, I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE STEERING OR THE BRAKES. THANK GOD I'M ALIVE AND I DIDN'T KILL ANYONE.

THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 2018. HEADING TO WORK ONE MORNING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE GIRL IN FRONT OF ME PUT ON BREAKS (WE WERE IN THE FAST LANE), SO I PUT ON MY BREAKS. I LOOKED IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AND SAW THE DRIVER BEHIND ME NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND GOING 50-55 MPH. I HAD ENOUGH TIME TO BRACE MYSELF BEFORE HE HIT ME FROM BEHIND WHICH MADE ME HIT THE PERSON IN FRONT OF ME (I HAVE VIDEO AND PICTURES). FORTUNATELY, MY TAHOE HELD UP PRETTY GOOD AND DIDN'T CRUMBLE WITH THE TYPE OF IMPACT IT HAD. MY CONCERN IS MY AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY BUT ACTUALLY DIDN'T. THE SMOKE CAME OUT FROM THE AIRBAGS THROUGH THE DASH AND MY AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT CAME ON MY ALERTS ON THE DASH. IF I WOULDN'T HAVE PREPARED AND BRACED MYSELF THEN MY FACE WOULD HAVE GONE IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I DIDN'T SEE A RECALL BUT IS THERE A REASON THEY DIDN'T COME OUT? ALSO, I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AWAY FROM THE SCENE TO TAKE THE TAHOE TO BODY SHOP BUT THE SEAT BELT WAS LOCKED IN IT'S PLACE AND COULD NOT REBUCKLE (I WAS BUCKLED DURING THE CRASH)
