Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.
0
InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
3
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

FUEL PUMP MODULE LEAKS GASOLINE

Opened Jul 10, 2007
Closed Aug 28, 2008

DURING THE COURSE OF THIS EA INVESTIGATION, ODI OBSERVED THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE COMPLAINTS (88%) AND WARRANTY CLAIMS (94%) WERE REPORTED FOR VEHICLES THAT ARE REGISTERED FOR USE IN THE SALT BELT REGION OF THE US.THIS AREA INCLUDES 20 STATES IN THE NORTHEAST, MID ATLANTIC AND THE MIDWEST REGIONS AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.CONSUMERS IN THE SALT BELT REGION REPORTED TO ODI THAT THEY COULD SMELL FUEL VAPORS IN THEIR VEHICLES WHILE DRIVING.UPON FURTHER EXAMINATION OF THEIR VEHICLES, THEY DISCOVERED THAT FUEL VAPORS WERE COMING OUT OF THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK. THIS CONDITION IS CAUSED BY CORROSION OF THE RETURN AND SENDER LINES OF THE FUEL PUMP MODULE.WATER AND ROAD SALT COLLECT ON TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP LEADING TO SMALL PINHOLES APPEARING ON THE FUEL LINES.FUEL MAY LEAK AND COLLECT ON TOP OF THE MODULE AND/OR SPILL ONTO THE GROUND.THE DATA EVALUATED UNDER THIS INVESTIGATION REFLECT A RELATIVELY LOW FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE THAT LARGELY ARISES IN SALT BELT STATES.GM HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE SUBJECT COMPONENT TO TEN YEARS OR 120,000 MILES.FURTHER USE OF AGENCY RESOURCES DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WARRANTED AT THIS TIME; ACCORDINGLY, THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED.THE CLOSING OF THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA THAT NO SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT EXISTS.THE AGENCY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO TAKE FURTHER ACTION IF WARRANTED BY THE CIRCUMSTANCES.FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SELECT DOCUMENT SEARCH.

I WAS SLOWING DOWN AS I WAS ENTERING AN INTERSECTION AND THERE WAS TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. I SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES AND STRUCK THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. NONE OF THE OCCUPANTS OF EITHER VEHICLE WAS HURT, PER POLICE REPORT. ON MY WAY TO THE COLLISION CENTER NEAR HOME, THE CAB OF THE TRUCK FILLED SUDDENLY WITH VERY BLACK SMOKE, SO THICK I COULDN'T SEE AND HAD TO IMMEDIATELY TRY TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THERE WERE FLAMES IN THE CAB AS WELL. WHEN I FINALLY GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK MY CLOTHES WERE ON FIRE. I WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL AND HAD TO BE TREATED FOR 1ST AND 2ND DEGREE BURNS OF THE FACE, SCALP, EYES, CALF, AND BOTH HANDS. MY RIGHT (DOMINANT) HAND WAS BURNED THE WORST, AS I HAD TRIED TO GET TO THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER I KEPT IN THE BACK. THE ENTIRE TRUCK BURNED EXCEPT THE LAST ROW OF SEATS (PARTIALLY BURNED) AND THE BACK DOOR. I AM STILL HAVING TO GO TO A WOUND CARE CENTER ON A WEEKLY BASIS, AND MY BANDAGES HAVE TO BE CHANGED DAILY. I HAD TO GET A FLAT-TOP HAIRCUT TO GET RID OF ALL MY HAIR BURNED OFF, AND I HAVE TO HAVE HELP FOR ALMOST EVERYTHING SINCE MY "GOOD" HAND WAS THE WORST INJURED. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP SINCE, DUE TO PAIN AND NIGHTMARES ABOUT BURNING. I FEEL AS THOUGH MY LIFE HAS BEEN TORN APART, ALL BECAUSE OF SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN. *TR

Manufacturer communications

A bulletin sent by a manufacturer to its dealers. Not a recall, and repairs are not necessarily free.

PIP5601C

This PI communicates the requirement to provide a pico file to receive diagnostic assistance from TAC.

General Communication

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Vehicle Wide Programming (VWP) is a new process to update software on GM Vehicles. It provides the ability via a single selection within Techline Connect to first identify which modules need updating and then proceed to updating affected modules (with some exceptions). The updating of modules is completed in parallel instead of the technician needing to update one module at a time. This allows a more streamlined approach for dealers and customers.

24-NA-141

POWER TRAIN

GM is receiving damaged (cracked or broken) transmission cores returned to the reman facilities. The damage is being caused either in the removal process by the technician, or inadequate packaging or shipping. This bulletin advises the dealers to be more careful not to damage the transmissions during removal and to package the core properly for return.

16-NA-383

ENGINE; FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

This service bulletin advises of a new fuel injection cleaner kit used for decarbonizing the intake valves to correct conditions of rough idle, Crank no start, extended crank or misfire, MIL with DTCs, and explains how Top Tier fuels should be used to reduce carbon build-up.

18-NA-099

This bulletin provides information for use on a Product Assistance Claim (PAC), which is formerly known as a Product Allegation Resolution (PAR) claim.

24-NA-098

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

This service bulletin provides information for dealers/technicians on Service Programming System (SPS) Error Codes E4398, E4399, E4401, E4403, M4404, M4413, M6954, M6955, E4414, E4423, E4491, E4492, or E6961 and resolution information.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
