2000 Chevrolet Van Problems
Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component
Data refreshed
What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2000 Chevrolet Van, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

I HAVE A 2000 CHEVY VENTURE VAN W/ ONLY 62043 MILES ON IT. WITH SOME OF MY KIDS IN THE CAR, THE ENGINE STARTED TO WHINE. BROUGHT IT TO A GARAGE, WHERE I WAS TOLD MY TRANSMISSION WAS JUNK AND IT WOULD COST ABOUT $2K TO FIX. I THANK GOD THAT I AT LEAST GOT TO A GARAGE AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. THIS IS ON THE HEELS OF GASKET SEALS LEAKING IN THE ENGINE, ABS HUB CENTERS FAILING, ALL BRAKES HAVING HAD WORK (NOT JUST FRONT), SUSPENSION WORK, SLIDING DOORS COMING OFF TRACK. CALLED CHEVY DEALER WHO GAVE ME # FOR GM, WHO COULDN'T WORK OUT SOLUTION WITH ME BECAUSE I CHOSE TO SERVICE CAR AT LOCAL GARAGE AND NOT DEALER. NEVER MIND THAT THE DEALER WOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VAN FROM CHEVY AGAIN AND HOPE SOMEONE LEARNS FROM MY EXPERIENCE. *NM
I OWN A 2000 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN WHICH I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE FOR OVER A YEAR BECAUSE OF MALFUNCTIONING ANTILOCK BRAKES. I BROUGHT IT TO BE REPAIRED LAST YEAR AND PAID OVER $800 FOR ONE SET OF BRAKES, THE OTHER SET STILL NEEDS TO BE FIXED. THE ANTILOCK BRAKES PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM STOPPING WHEN TRAVELING AT SLOW SPEEDS. THIS IS A DEFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN A SERVICE BULLETIN FOR THIS PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE 2002. THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS VERY PROBLEM ON SIMILAR CHEVY SUVS AND TRUCKS, BUT NOT INCLUDING THE ASTRO VAN.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.

From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH MY VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER RELATING TO THE BRAKES AND STEERING. (THE RADIO AND LIGHTS WERE STILL OPERATING.) THE ONLY THING I COULD DO WAS COAST TO A STOP. THIS CAUSED ME TO RUN A RED LIGHT, BUT FORTUNATELY THE ONLY CAR GOING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION HAD JUST CLEARED IT BEFORE I ENTERED THE INTERSECTION.*AK
RETURNED TO POLLARDS CHEV. FOR OIL LEAD 3 TIMES, ONLY SLOW IT DOWN. AFTER DRIVING VEHICLE ABOUT 20 MILES AND/OR WARM UP I WOULD STOP AT RED LIGHT AND THE RPM'S WOULD SURGE 2 TO 4 THOUSAND. LELK INSIDE CAB ABOVE BRAKE PEDAL. ON SEPTEMBER 27,2000 SLOW DOWN FOR A DIP, LEFT FRONT MADE A SNAPPING NOISE AND DROPPED A LITTLE. DROVE ON TO A CURVE AND STEERING WOULDN'T TURN. VEHICLE WENT INTO DITCH, FRONT LEFT WHEEL, LUG NUTS, STUDS, AND PART OF THE WHEEL WHERE THE STUDS SCREW INTO WAS BROKEN OFF AND UNDER THE TRUCK. THERE WAS NO BRAKE PRESSURE AT ALL, AND SPOTS OF FLUID ON THE ROAD BEHIND THE TRUCK. CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE HAS GIVEN ME THE SHAFT, AND SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH TRUCK AND TO TURN IT INTO MY INSURANCE. THEY DON'T HONOR THE 3 YEAR, 36000 MILE WARRANTY AND DON'T EVEN US VASALINE WHEN THEY TELL THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLY. THIS CASE WENT TO BUSINESS RESOURCE CENTER OF CHEVROLET, AND NOW CHEVROLET SAYS THEY CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT. I HAVE TO TALK TO BRC.

2000 VAN LEFT IN AT 55,000 MILES FOR OIL CHANGE. INFORMED THAT MANIFOLD GASKET IS LEAKING AND NEEDS REPLACING $880. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THESE VANS SO COST SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *AK

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
