What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Chrysler 200, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
A couple of years ago my passenger head restraint deployed while parked and would not reset. I was charged $652.00 to re place. Chrysler later reimbursed me for this expense and extended my warranty for this for one year. Two days ago the driver side activated while the car was parked. That means the warrant extension had passed. Did some research and this is a common problem caused by the weakening of the plastic that is under pressure of the retaining springs. This problem not only affects the Chrysler 200, but 300s and several keep and Dodge vehicles manufactured between 2010 and 2015. It is just by the grace of God no one has been injured. Mileage was 78000 the first time and 106500 the second time
Head restraint deployed and seatbelt malfunction.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Chrysler 200. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH on the highway, the vehicle stalled, and the vehicle turned off independently. The contact was able to coast over to the right side of the road, and attempted to restart the vehicle, and the vehicle started as intended. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to AAA where it was diagnosed and determined that the totally integrated power module (TIPM) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the horn was connected to the module. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.
the automobile will shut down when driving uncommanded, when it does this you lose power steering and braking and sometimes locks the steering wheel. the horn sounds uncommanded randomly. the windshield wipers will intermittently not work. have researched the problem and have found this issue is common, with this year and make of vehicle. i have contacted the manufacturer and they have been no help. they state they know there is an issue but they do not have parts to fix the issue. when it shuts down you do not get any lights or notice on the dashboard. this puts the driver and passengers at risk and other drivers. the manufacturer stated on the phone its basically my problem and since they do not have parts to repair it i'm on my own, on finding the part, most likely refurbished
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving this vehicle the car would shut down while driving, no ability to brake, to steer. The car would start back up, but the same issues would happen, making it extremely dangerous to drive. This happened on several different occasions. One of my issues with this problem is that Chrysler had the same issue with the 2015 Chrysler 200 and the 2015 was recalled. If you look at sites other than Chrysler, customers had reported the same problem with the 2014 and it looks like Chrysler just swept it under the rug. The dealership is saying that the TIPM system needs to be replaced on my car, for a cost of $3000.00 for a know problem.
THE CAR HAS A TICKING BY THE RIGHT SIDE I REPORTED THIS TO MEINKE AND THEY LET THE WARRANTY EXPIRE WITH SILVERCREST BUT ITS NOTED IN MY 30 DAY WARRANTY WITH DRIVE TIME.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
IT SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING ..WITHOUT NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING THAT THERES ANY PROBLEM.. THE BATTERY VOLTAGE IS GOOD AND MY ALTERNATOR IS GOOD AS WELL . IT SHUT OFF ON ME MORE THAN THREE TIMES.
CAR WILL JUST RANDOMLY SHUT OFF WHILE THE CAR IS CRUISING, ACCELERATING, OR DECELERATING. THERE ARE NO WARNING LIGHTS, SOUNDS, OR VISUAL CUES TO INDICATE ANY SORT OF PROBLEM. IN ADDITION TO THE ENGINE, THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKE ASSIST WILL ALSO SHUT DOWN. AFTER THE STALL: IT DOESN'T TRIGGER ANY ERROR CODES FOR AN OBD-II READER, MEANING TECHNICIANS WONT BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. WILL DO THIS AT ALL SPEEDS, EVEN ON THE HIGH WAY, OR PLACES THAT MAY NOT HAVE A PLACE TO PULL OFF. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Chrysler 200. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle stalled on several occasions. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken back to the residence. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Traction control and power train light on dashboard, are blinking and the car itself will not accerlerate. This is the 2nd time in 3 months it has happened.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

The car would slow down out of no where there time when the car doesn’t go over 5 miles per hours and throws it self in park some times my door wouldn’t open with the bottons can’t open my truck
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.

Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
ATC TEMPERATURE CONTROL UNIT IS NOT SENDING POWER AND GROUND TO THE LEFT SIDE BLEND DOOR ACTUATOR, SO THE HEAT AND DEFOGGER DOESN'T WORK CAUSING IT TO BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE ROAD WHEN CONDITIONS WARRANT THE DEFOGGER IS NEEDED. DURING ADVERSE WEATHER ON 8/24 (UNSEASONABLY COOL AND RAINING IN CENTRAL NC), I COULD NOT SEE THE ROAD BECAUSE THE WINDSHIELD FOGGED UP AND AS NOTED, THE DEFOGGER ISN'T WORKING.
HEAT STOPPED WORKING WHICH CAUSES ME TO HAVE NO DEFROST THIS LEADS TO VISIBILITY ISSUES HAVE SEEN MANY ONLINE COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
CAR DELIVERED AND PURCHASED FROM MCCLUSKY CHEVROLET, [email protected], CINCINNATI, OH TO FARRAGUT, TN ON 02/25/2020 IN EXCELLENT DRIVEABILITY CONDITION. CAR PERFOMANCE WAS EXCELLENT, DRIVEN DAILY UNTIL 03/03/2020 AND ALWAYS RETURNED TO HOME GARAGE. WHEN STARTED THE MORNING OF 03/04/2020, THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY RACED TO 4000 RPM IN NEUTRAL. TAPPING THE BRAKE LOWERED THE IDLE TO 1200 RPM, NOT THE NORMAL 850 (APPROXIMATE). I BACKED THE OUT OF THE GARAGE UPHILL INTO THE STREET. WHEN ENGAGED IN DRIVE THE MOMENT OF STARTING ACCELERATION THE CAR GENTLY ACCELERATE ITSELF WITH MY FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR TO ABOUT 40 MPH IN 1/4 MILE. TAPPING THE BRAKE STOPPED THE ACCELERATION AND THE CAR THROTTLE RETURNED TO ABOUT 1200 RPM. AFTER BRAKING TO A STOP, I STARTED TO DRIVE AROUND THE BLOCK AND THE CAR AGAIN ACCELERATED BY ITSELF. WITH MULTIPLE BRAKES TAPS, I RETURNED THE CAR INTO THE DRIVE WAY. THE NEXT DAY, AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, THE RPM AGAIN RACED TO 4000. TAPPING THE BRAKE RETURNED THE RPM TO 1200, SIMILAR TO A CRUISE CONTROL RETURN. IN ALL CASES THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT TURNED ON AND CYCLING THE CRUISE BUTTON ON AND OFF HAD NO EFFECT. CRUISE CONTROL MECHANISM MAYBE OR MAYBE NOT BE INVOLVED. I DID AN ACCUTRON CODE READ AND NO CODES RETURNED. NO ATTEMPT TO TRY TO FIX OR REPAIR THE PROBLEM WAS MADE. CAR NEEDS TO BE ANALYZED BY NHTSA, NOT JUST REPAIRED. IT IS HAZARDOUS. I USED TO TEACH PHYSICS AND HAVE PERFORMED MOST MAJOR CAR REPAIRS SINCE 1960. I WISH TO KEEP THIS CHRYSLER 200 S RETRACTABLE CONVERTIBLE. IT WILL STAY IN MY DRIVEWAY UNTIL ANALYZED BY NHTSA.
I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2014. I HAVE REPLACED THE GAS CAP TWICE, THE SEAL BEHIND THE GAS CAP AND THE GAS LIGHT STAYS ON. THE ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON OFTEN AND THE CAR RUNS ROUGH, CUTTING OUT AND JERKING. IT HAS DONE THIS SINCE I BOUGHT IT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 CHRYSLER 200. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD A FEATURE, WHICH ALERTED HER THAT THE BLINKER BULB WAS OUT. THE CONTACT ALSO DISCOVERED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING. THE BULBS WERE REPLACED THREE TIMES, BUT THE FAILURES CONTINUED. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS ADVISED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO CHECK FOR SIMILAR RECALLS WITH EARLIER MODEL VEHICLES. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE DEALER WOULD "ASSIGN" A RECALL TO THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE. DWAYNE LANE'S CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (10515 EVERGREEN WAY, EVERETT, WA 98204, (425) 441-3522) STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT CREATE A "RECALL" FOR THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT RELAYED THIS INFORMATION TO THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE CONTACT MAILED A LETTER TO NHTSA ON AUGUST 27, 2019, BUT HAD NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. THE MANUFACTURER REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER AGAIN AND STATED THAT THE DEALER WOULD "ASSIGN" A RECALL TO THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN.
HEADLIGHTS HAVE DETERIORATED SEAL CAUSING MOISTURE CONDENSATION. DEALERSHIP COSTS $615.00. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 88,000 MILES. THIS ISSUE IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THIS IS A RESULT OF CHEAP SEALS

Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
WHILE SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY, EXPERIENCED A FLAT TIRE AND WANTED TO CHANGE THE TIRE TO A SPARE, BUT FOUND THAT NO AMOUNT OF TORQUE WOULD LOOSEN THE LUG NUTS. AFTER TRYING TWO DIFFERENT LUG WRENCHES, I ENDED UP HAVING TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER I HAD A WARRANTY WITH FOR THE TIRE. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT ALL OF THE LUGNUTS ON THE TIRE WERE DEFECTIVE (AND LATER ADDED THAT ALL OF THE OTHER LUGNUTS ON THE CAR WERE AS WELL). THEIR DEFECT IS THAT THEY HAVE A NON FERROUS (TIN?) COATING ON THEM THAT SHEARS OFF WHEN TORQUE IS APPLIED. THE LUGNUTS ATTACHING THE TIRE / WHEEL HAD TO BE HAMMERED OFF TO BE REMOVED. I HAVE SINCE HAD ALL OF THESE LUGNUTS REPLACED (EXCEPT FOR ONE) AT MY OWN EXPENSE. I BELIEVE IT I HAD BEEN STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN I ENCOUNTERED THE FLAT AND THE DEFECTIVE LUGNUTS, IT WOULD HAVE PUT ME AT PERSONAL RISK WHILE TRYING DESPERATELY TO REMOVE THEM - NOT TO MENTION THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY TRYING TO DO SO. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT "NO ONE WAS AT FAULT" FOR THE DEFECTIVE LUGNUTS. I TOOK EXCEPTION TO THIS, BEING OF THE OPINION THAT THE MANUFACTURER OF THESE LUGNUTS WAS VERY MUCH RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.
ENCOUNTERED A FLAT TIRE (OBSERVED WHEN DRIVING) AND WHEN I WENT TO TAKE THE WHEEL / TIRE OFF TO PUT ON THE SPARE, FOUND I COULD NOT LOOSEN THE LUG NUTS WITH A VARIETY OF LUG WRENCHES THAT WERE TRIED. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALER AND WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE LUG NUTS HAD TO BE HAMMERED OFF THE WHEEL AND REPLACED. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE LUG NUTS ON THE REMAINING WHEELS / TIRES WERE IN THE SAME CONDITION. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT IT, THEY SAID THAT IT WAS "NOBODY'S FAULT" THAT THIS HAPPENED TO THE LUG NUTS. I DISAGREE - AND SUBMIT THAT IT WAS THE MANUFACTURER OF THE LUG NUTS THAT WAS "AT FAULT". I READ ABOUT A SIMILAR INCIDENT INVOLVING FORD VEHICLES THAT WAS ON THE VERGE OF A CLASS ACTION SUIT, BUT THEN DISMISSED. APPARENTLY THE OUTSIDE COATING (ALUMINUM?) ON THE LUG NUTS SHEARS OFF WHEN PRESSURE IS APPLIED. I AM LOOKING FOR COMPENSATION FOR HAVING TO REPLACE THESE, ALONG WITH A POSSIBLE FACTORY RECALL.

Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE CAR WAS BOUGHT WITH A 7 YEAR 100,000 MILE CERTIFIED WARRANTY,WITH 29,000 MILES. AT ABOUT 31,000 MILES WHILE CITY STREET DRIVING THE BRAKES STARTED GRINDING AND SQUEAKING WHEN COMING TO A STOP, TOOK TO DEALER, THEY SAID EVERY THING WAS FINE. ANOTHER 200 MILES SAME PROBLEM, RETURNED TO DEALER THEY CHANGED THE BRAKE PADS. 200-300 MORE MILES RETURNED TO DEALER WITH THE SAME PROBLEM THEY SAID THEY CHANGED THE ROTORS. DRIVING ONE DAY APPLIED BRAKES AND THE ABS SYSTEM FAILED AND THE BRAKES DID A RAPID THUMPING SOUND AND I HAD NO BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER AND NOT HIT ANYONE, ONCE AGAIN THEY CHECKED THE ROTORS AND THE BRAKES, SAID OK. MY FRONT RIMS ARE BLACK FROM BRAKE DUST. AT NIGHT WHEN I TURN THE HEATING SYSTEM ON I CAN SEE A SPARK BEHIND THE NOB. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?. I CAN'T PUT A SPECIFIC DATE ON THE EVENTS BECAUSE IT HAPPENS WHEN EVER I DRIVE. THE CAR PULLS TO THE RIGHT ON FREEWAY WHEN DRIVING, AND SOUNDS LIKE THE BOTTOM IS FALLING OUT WHEN DRIVING CITY STREETS
