What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

No fire or police report was filed. The front driver’s side of the vehicle was consumed by the fire. The contact believed the failure was due to an electrical malfunction located in the driver's door that caused the fire. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was towed to a salvage facility. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
Odometer Fraud. The contact stated that while considering purchasing a 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan, the odometer mileage was 101,000 but the registration information indicated that in 2022 the odometer mileage was 125,000. The vehicle was a private sale.
Fuel system

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the water pump was replaced. The contact stated that several months later, while driving 65 MPH, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact used excessive force to steer the vehicle to an independent mechanic, where a power steering flush was performed; however, the failure persisted. The mechanic replaced the steering pump, which seemed to correct the failure. The contact then stated that the whining sound returned without warning. The vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the valves inside the engine connected to the fuel injector were defective and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that after the diagnostic tests, the vehicle failed to start up after several attempts. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
V51 recall cause problems with power control module. Poor fuel economy Trouble starting/ restarting Engine not receiving power
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
While the Emergency Parking Brake was activated and vehicle in Park in the driveway that is on a hill, the car began rolling down the driveway at a fast rate of speed with no one in drivers seat. 3 young kids were in car seats in the van with it running while we were outside of the vehicle speaking. All doors locked and it flew down the driveway almost flipping over at the bottom. We took the vehicle to the dealership we purchased it from on June 29, 2023 and they could not recreate the issue. No warning lights were on prior to this incident and when citizens that stopped when this happened, got in the vehicle to dislodge it from the dirt that thankfully stopped it from flipping, they verified that it still showed the E Brake as being engaged it was still in park. No police or insurance was called because there was no damage to the vehicle or children but the dealership was called. I do have video of this event but your website does not accept videos
VAN WILL BOG DOWN AND THEN JUST SHUT OFF. WILL ALSO TAKE 5-6 TIMES BEFORE IT WILL RESTART. THE ELECTRICAL GOES HAYWIRE RANDOMLY. FOUND OUT THE TIPM IS BAD AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON OTHER VEHICLES DOING THE SAME EXACT THING DURING THE SAME YEARS.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Motor problems and transmission problems, so can’t use the cruise control.
The accelerator pedal sticks in full throttle and forces the car to speed forward. Brakes barely overcome the acceleration and the engine will accelerate from a complete stop. Super dangerous and there are a number of threads on vehicle forums that describe the situation
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim

Vehicle randomly dies completely like no battery connected either while parked or in motion. Then after a few moments vehicle starts like nothing is wrong. No codes no warning.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
BOTH SLIDING DOORS WERE WORKING FINE, THEN ONE DAY THE DRIVER'S SLIDING DOOR JUST FROZE--CAN'T OPEN IT ELECTRONICALLY OR MANUALLY. THE LOCK IS STUCK IN THE LOCKED POSITION AND THE POWER DOOR LOCK SWITCH WON'T MOVE THAT DOOR'S LOCK TO THE 'UNLOCK' POSITION. WHEN YOU TRY TO MOVE THE LOCK/UNLOCK BUTTON/LEVER ON THAT SLIDING DOOR, IT'S STUCK IN THE LOCKED POSITION--EVEN WITH A BUNCH OF FORCE I CAN'T MOVE THE LEVER TO THE UNLOCKED POSITION--I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING TO BREAK THE LEVER IF I FORCE IT TOO MUCH.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE SLIDING DOORS FAILED TO OPEN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 144,000.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY VEHICLE WAS AT JEFF WYLER CHRYSLER, DODGE AND JEEP IN BATAVIA, OHIO FOR A WEEK PLUS A FEW DAYS. IN ALL OF THAT TIME THAT THIS VEHICLE WAS HAVING ITS TRANSMISSION ISSUES DIAGNOSED AND INSPECTED, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FAILED TO ADDRESS THE OPEN RECALL OF NHTSA RECALL #17V-376, FCA RECALL #T33 FOR THE STEERING WHEEL WIRING. THE DEALERSHIP KNOWS ABOUT OPEN RECALLS AND, YET FAILED TO PERFORM THE REPAIRS ON THIS VEHICLE. INSTEAD, IT ALLOWED MY VEHICLE TO BE TOWED FROM ITS LOT BACK TO MY HOME ADDRESS, DESPITE KNOWING THAT IT FAILED TO ADDRESS THE RECALL. DODGE CUSTOMER CARE REPRESENTATIVES INFORMED ME OF THIS RECALL WHILE I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH THEM AND STILL THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT EVEN MAKE MENTION OF THIS. THEY FAILED TO REPAIR THE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS OR FATAL ISSUES WITH THE VEHICLE AND DODGE FAILED TO ENSURE THAT THE VEHICLE RECALL WAS COMPLETED DURING ALL OF MY CONVERSATIONS WITH DODGE AND DODGE EXECUTIVE OFFICE PERSONNEL.
2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN WAS BEING DRIVEN FROM LAS VEGAS TO LOMA LINDA CALIFORNIA DOWN SOUTH I-15 NEAR BARSTOW CALIFORNIA AT 70 MILES PER HOUR AROUND 2:30PM ON A MONDAY AFTERNOON APRIL 15,2019. HE WAS HIT IN THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. SENT VEHICLE ROLLING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND OFF THE HIGHWAY DOWN AN EMBANKMENT INTO A FENCE. THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED! MANY OF THE WINDOWS WERE BROKEN OUT. WITH THE FORCE OF THE ROLLOVER CRASH THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WAS SMASHED IN. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED ANYWHERE IN THE VEHICLE. THE FRONT DRIVERS DOOR WAS ALSO BROKEN AT THE DOOR FRAME. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED DUE TO THE FORCE OF THE ROLL OVER SEVERAL TIME AND DOWN AN EMBANKMENT.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
ABOUT 11/30 I WENT TO START THE CAR IN THE MORNING., THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPERS WERE ON WHEN I TURNED THE KEY, AND WOULD NOT CHANGE SPEED OR TURN OFF AS MUCH AS I TRIED THE BACK AND THEY WOULD NOT TURN ON. THE RADIO/ CLOCK DID WORK BUT NO LIGHTED INFORMATION AND SAME WITH THE SPEEDOMETER, THE GAS TANK, TEMPERATURE WARNING AND TACHOMETER LIGHTING. THE CAR STARTED, AND RESTARTED SEVERAL TIME WELL ENOUGH BUT THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND THE WIPERS DID NOT CHANGE. I TRIED TURNING THE KEY ON AND OFF WITHOUT STARTING THE CAR A NUMBER OF TIMES WITH DIFFERENT NUMBER OF TRIES BEFORE RESTARTING AS A POSSIBLE RESETTING WITH NO CHANGE. EVENTHOUGH IT HAD NO WORKING SPEEDOMATER I DROVE THE CAR FIRST AROUND THE BLOCK SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN TO MY LOCAL MECHANEC. I TALKED TO HIM HE DID NOT HAVE THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT FOR TESTING REQUIRED TO FIND THE PROBLEM. HE SUGGESTED I GO TO THE DEALER AND 1) SEE IF THEY HAD ANY RECALL OR UNPUBLISHED ISSUED REPAIR NOTICES ETC 2) GET AN ESTIMATE OF THE POSSIBLE COSTS AND TIMES FOR REPAIR. I THANKED HIM AND WAS IN MY CAR AGAIN WITHIN 15 MINUTES AND THE TOTAL PROBLEMS WENT AWAY, FRONT WIPERS OFF AND ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WORKED. THE CAR WORKED FOR 4 MORE TRIPS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ON DEC 3RD 2020, I STARTED THE CAR JUST FINE WENT ON THE EXPRESS WAY FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR A ABOUT 35 MINUTES TRIP. ABOUT 8 MINUTES INTO THE EXPRESSWAY DRIVE THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE WIPER WENT ON FOR ABOUT 1.5 MINUTES, BUT BEFORE I COULD EXIT THE EXPRESSWAY THEY WENT BACK ON AND I COULD TURN OFF THE WIPERS, A FEW MINUTES THEY WENT OUT AGAIN AND JUST AS SUDDENLY IN 2 MINUTES THEY WERE WORKING AGAIN. THERE WAS A THIRD TIME BEFORE MY EXIT THAT LASTED ONLY ABOUT 1 MINUTE. WHEN I GOT OFF AT THE USUAL EXIT I PARKED & TRIED TO SEE THE PROBLEM AGAIN FOR NEARLY 20 MINUTES WITH NO LUCK, I CONTINUED THE TRIP AND IT WAS UNEVENTFUL AS DRIVE BACK & SINCE NO PROBLEM.
DRIVING VAN IN TOWN 35 MPH WIPERS CAME ON BY THEMSELVES AND STAYED ON SWITCH IN THE OFF POSITION INFORMATION PANEL GOES OUT ALONG WITH SPEEDOMETER, TACH, AND GAGES VAN RUNS LIKE NORMAL. CHANGED TIPM NO CORRECTION FAILURE HAPPENED AT 156000 THOUSAND MILES
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim

The TIPM failed which caused a loss of power to the vehicle and power to the fuel pump. I was driving at approximately 60 MPH when the vehicle lost all power and the steering wheel felt locked. I was unable to turn the steering wheel as the Dodge Grand Caravan came to a quick stop as if it was out of gas. Luckily I reacted quickly and was able to avoid an accident. After approximately 10 minutes of trying to restart the vehicle and drive to a safe location the vehicle restarted. This happened again when I was driving and came to a red light at a major intersection and the vehicle stalled out as if out of gas and the steering locked. I again tried to restart the vehicle intermittently for 15 minutes; after which it finally restarted, and I was able to drive and get out of the intersection without an accident. I was lucky that this didn't cause an accident. The other times the defective TIPM and power to the fuel pump caused the vehicle to fail to start and left me stranded. I have had the vehicle diagnosed and the TIPM repair price is quite expensive. The vehicle did not have any check engine or warning lights before this occurred. I have read many similar complaints of this occurring with others driving Dodge/Chrysler vehicles. I feel that there is evidence that the TIPM and the fuel pump on the 2011 Dodge Caravan are safety concerns. Every experienced mechanic I have spoken with is aware of the common issue with the TIPM, and power to the fuel pump and vehicle. Although I avoided an accident there is a concern for everyone's safety.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. WHILE DRIVING UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) INDICATOR SPONTANEOUSLY ILLUMINATED. ADDITIONALLY, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THERE WAS A FAILURE WITH THE TIRES SINCE THE TPMS INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO FERRARIO CHRYSLER TOWANDA (168 GOLDEN MILE RD, TOWANDA, PA 18848, (570) 485-0072) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CODES NEEDED TO BE RESET. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND OPENED CASE NUMBER: 33719903. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
DRIVING STRAIGHT, APPROX 35 MPH ON 2-LANE STATE HIGHWAY PASSING THROUGH SMALL TOWN WITH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON BOTH LANES AND NO SHOULDER. WITH NO PRIOR WARNING, ALL RED INSTRUMENT WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON AT ONCE, INCLUDING FUEL PUMP/THROTTLE, BRAKES AND OTHERS. CAR STALLED DEAD AND INSTANTANEOUSLY LOST POWER TO STEERING AND BRAKES, WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. WOULD NOT RESTART. FORTUNATELY DRIVER WAS ABLE TO STEER VEHICLE PARTLY OFF ROAD INTO A DRIVEWAY OF BUSY STORE, BLOCKING DRIVEWAY TO CUSTOMERS. STATE POLICE WERE UNABLE TO GET CAR IN NEUTRAL TO PUSH TO SAFE LOCATION. POLICE ORDERED CAR TOWED AND IT IS CURRENTLY AWAITING DIAGNOSIS FOR TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE("TIPM") FAILURE AT DODGE DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS A LIFE-THREATENING FAILURE AND IF IT HAD HAPPENED AT NEARLY ANY OTHER LOCATION OR IN ADVERSE WEATHER THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURY OR DEATH TO DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. WE HAVE TOW RECEIPT. WE DON'T KNOW WHETHER STATE POLICE FILED INCIDENT REPORT. MANY SIMILAR TIPM FAILURES OF DODGE AND CHRYSLER VEHICLES HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO NHTSA AND YOU HAVE RECENTLY REJECTED A CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY PETITION FOR NHTSA INTERVENTION REGARDING THIS DEFECT. CHRYSLER/DODGE IS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THE TIPM BECAUSE 80,894 JEEP WRANGLERS AND DODGE NITRO VEHICLES WERE RECALLED IN 2007 FOR THE SAME PROBLEMS. IN THAT RECALL, DEFECTIVE TIPMS HAD A SOFTWARE PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL. NHTSA SHOULD REQUIRE DODGE TO RECALL EVERY MODEL THAT HAS THIS SAME TIPM INSTALLED AND TO IMMEDIATELY WARN THE PUBLIC THAT THEIR LIVES ARE IN DANGER EVERY TIME THEY DRIVE THEIR DODGE/CHRYSLER VEHICLE. IT IS UNCONSCIONABLE THAT THE MANUFACTURER AND NHTSA HAVE PREVIOUSLY BEEN INFORMED OF THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT AND FAILED TO PROTECT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

IT STARTED WITH MY VEHICLE NOT STARTING INTERMITTENTLY. AS THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP. AFTER EXTENSIVE SEARCHING IT WAS REVEALED TO BE A FAULTY TIPM MODULE THAT CAUSES ISSUES WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY VALIDATED THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS LISTED FOR MOST VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME MODULE, HOWEVER NOT FOR THE DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY. THE ISSUE HAS NOW ESCALATED. WHILE DRIVING IN THE PITCH DARK TO WORK THE VEHICLE STARTED ACTING FUNNY, THEN ALL POWER SHUT OFF, STEERING LOCKED, FOB LOCKED IN IGNITION, NO LIGHTS, NO BLINKERS, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. I HAD JUST DROPPED OFF MY SON SO GLAD HE WASN'T WITH ME. IT SEEMS THE PROBLEM ALL GOES BACK TO THE TIPM WHICH HAS BEEN DRAINING MY BATTERY AND CAUSING OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS "OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY". I EXPLAINED HOW THIS PROBLEM DOESN'T EVEN START UNTIL APPROX. 70,000 MILES(I'M CURRENTLY AT 60,000). BEYOND THAT THE WARRANT Y WAS EXPIRED WHEN I PURCHASED IT USED FROM THE DODGE DEALER 3 YEARS AGO. I'VE CONTACTED DODGE NUMEROUS TIMES AND NO ONE OF ANY STATURE WILL EVEN TALK TO ME SINCE THE CASEWORKER CALLED THE CASE "CLOSED" BASED ON THE WARRANTY. I THINK THIS IS IMMORAL ON THE PART OF DODGE BEING THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THESES MODULES THAT GOES AS FAR BACK AS 2010, YET THEY CONTINUED TO USE IT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE SO MY WIFE CAN MOVE MY CHILD AROUND SAFELY, AND AM SCARED TO EVEN LET HER DRIVE IT. AT THE MOMENT NO ONE IS DRIVING IT BECAUSE IT DIED ON THE ROAD AND SMELLS LIKE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS BURNING. I AM CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A WAY TO FIX THIS ISSUE. THE ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR IS AROUND $2,000.00.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SEAT BELT IN THE CENTER ROW OF THE VEHICLE WAS INOPERABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BUCKLE FAILED TO LATCH SECURELY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. GARY MILLER CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP RAM (5746 PEACH ST, ERIE, PA 16509, (814) 868-3635) WAS CONTACTED BY PHONE AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTIES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,794.
AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON CONSTANTLY - NEVER TURNS OFF. SEAT BELT LIGHT WILL SOMETIMES COME ON EVEN WHEN SEAT BELT IS SECURE. FUEL PUMP DOESN'T STOP RUNNING AFTER ENGINE IS SHUT OFF. WHILE DRIVING, ALL LIGHTS WILL COME ON ON DASH AND GAUGES/HEADLIGHTS WILL FLICKER THEN CAR WILL DIE. HAS HAPPENED MORE THAN THREE(!) TIMES AT NIGHT ON BUSY HIGHWAY WITH 2 TODDLERS IN CAR!!! HAD TO PULL OFF ROAD IN COMPLETE DARKNESS. I AM FEARFUL OF DRIVING THIS CAR. I WILL NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT ANYMORE.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
While driving my vehicle at highway speed (75mph), the driver's seat headrest, for lack of a more descriptive term, exploded and struck me in the back of my head. After the incident I stopped the vehicle and looked at the headrest. It appears to be spring loaded and something in the headrest failed causing it to spring forward for no reason. The headrest is now compressed and held in place with zip ties until I can find a replacement. I feel this is a safety issue due to the disorientation and headache that immediately followed the incident.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BATTERY FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE WINDOWS ROLLED DOWN AND THE LOCKS LOCKED AND UNLOCKED INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TIPM MODULE FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000.
