Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY

211 units potentially affected
The defect: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE ENGINE GROUND STRAP WAS MANUFACTURED IMPROPERLY. AS A RESULT OF THE IMPROPER "CRIMPING" OF THE GROUND STRAP CONNECTORS TO THE BRAIDED GROUND STRAP, THE ENGINE GROUND STRAP MAY NOT PROVIDE THE PROPER ELECTRICAL GROUND BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE CHASSIS.
The risk: IF THE STRAP FAILS TO PROVIDE THE PROPER GROUND TO THE CHASSIS, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WILL SEEK A GROUND AT THE IGNITION COIL. THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION COIL GROUND CABLE COULD OVERHEAT AND COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP. IF THE ENGINE STOPPED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN, IT COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE EXISTING ENGINE GROUND STRAP AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE STRAP WITH A NEW ONE WHICH HAS THE PROPER CONNECTOR CRIMPING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 15, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FERRARI AT 1-201-816-2651.

Crash reported

SINCE NEW, THE CAR VIOLENTLY AND SUDDENLY BUCK AND LURCHED IN FIRST GEAR. SINCE THIS IS A HIGH PERFORMANCE CAR IT MAKES IT VERY DANGEROUS AND UNCONTROLLABLE. THIS IS DANGEROUS TO THE DRIVER, OTHER DRIVERS, AND PEDESTRIANS. MANY TIME THE DEALER TRIED TO FIX BUT THEY CLAIM THAT THE DEFECT IS INHERENT TO THE EARLIER MODELS OF THIS CAR. THEY CLAIM FERRARI IS UNWILLING TO FIX EARLIER MODELS BECAUSE OF COST. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT HOLD A CHARGE. WHEN THE CONSUMERS SON WENT TO MOVE THE VEHICLE, IT LURCHED AND HE HIT A TREE WHICH CAUSED MINOR DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER. A FERRARI REP TOLD THE CONSUMER THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE EARLIER MODEL VEHICLE AND NO AMOUNT OF RESETTING THE COMPUTER WOULD CHANGE THE PROBLEM. *JB

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
