2010 Ford Escape Hybrid Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

THE CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT COMES ON, RED BRAKE WARNING LIGHT, AUDIBLE ALARM AND BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. THE HEV STOPS WORKING AND THE GAS MOTOR DOESN'T SHUTOFF. THIS HAS HAPPEN A NUMBER OF TIMES FORD DEALER "NO CODES FOUND, UNABLE TO DUPLICATE". HAVE HAD A COMPLETE BRAKE JOB DONE, WITH UPGRADED PARTS AS RECOMMENDED. PROBLEM STILL CONTINUES TO COME AND GO INTERMITTENTLY. TALK TO OTHER FORD ESCAPE HYBRID OWNERS AND ALL SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM AND THE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED.

NHTSA ID 11139616 · filed Oct 11, 2018

WHILE DRIVING OUR CAR, IN GOOD WEATHER, (110,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE) FLASHED ERROR MESSAGE "CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM" IT LOST ALL ASSISTED BRAKES AND WE HAD TO MASH THE BRAKES TO THE FLOOR TO BRAKE ADEQUATELY. FORTUNATELY WE WEREN'T ON A HIGHWAY OR IN ANY TRAFFIC OTHERWISE THIS WOULD HAVE ABSOLUTELY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. FORD IS SAYING IT'LL COST UPWARDS OF 5K TO HAVE THE BRAKES FIXED, IT'S AN ELECTRONIC MODULE THAT THEY BELIEVE IS DEFECTIVE, THEY AREN'T SURE IF THIS WILL FULLY FIX THE ISSUE. I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER REPORTS OF THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED AND FIXED BY FORD AS OBVIOUSLY ANY LOSS OF BRAKE FUNCTION IS UNACCEPTABLE IN MY OPINION.

I WAS BRAKING AND PARKING IN OUR DRIVEWAY. THE CAR ACCELERATED WENT OVER THE EDGE OF OUR DRIVEWAY AND STRUCK SEVERAL TREES.

NHTSA ID 10873651 · filed Jun 10, 2016

WHILE TRAVELING HOME TO PA FROM NC ON VACATION, MY HUSBAND WAS MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY WHEN HE LOST ALL USE OF THE GAS PEDAL (IT APPEARED TO HAPPEN AS THE VEHICLE WAS SHIFTING GEARS AND THE "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON). OUR VEHICLE SLOWLY BEGAN LOSING SPEED AND WE HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH CARS TRAVELING 65-70MPH AROUND US. ONCE PULLED OFF, WHILE APPLYING THE BREAK, THE VEHICLE STALLED. HE STARTED THE VEHICLE UP AGAIN WITH A ROUGH START...WE CONTINUED ON OUR WAY. AFTER READING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS, WE ARE UNSURE WHY FORD WOULD NOT ISSUE A RECALL. WE CALLED OUT DEALERSHIP TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN AND WERE TOLD THEY ARE UNAWARE OF ANY ISSUES INVOLVING THE THROTTLE BODY...I HAVE AN APPT FOR MONDAY 8/4. *TR

PARKED THE VEHICLE IN MY DRIVEWAY. OPENED THE REAR WINDOW TO GET AN ITEM FROM THE BACK OF MY VEHICLE. CLOSED THE WINDOW, AND THE WINDOW EXPLODED AND THE GLASS SHATTERED INTO SMALL PIECES INSIDE MY VEHICLE AND ALL OVER MY DRIVEWAY. MOST OF THE GLASSES REMAIN INTACT ON THE WINDOW BUT WAS ONLY BARELY HANGING. THE SHATTERED PIECES CAME MAINLY FROM BOTH SIDES. IT HAPPENED AROUND 5:20PM AND THE TEMPERATURE WAS AROUND 30 DEGREE. *TR

AT ABOUT 6:30 PM THIS EVENING, A FRIEND AND I WENT TO THE CAR TO GO TO STORE. WE OPENED THE BACK HATCH AND PUT IN A COUPLE ITEMS WE WERE PLANNING ON RETURNING IN THE BACK. MY FRIEND SHUT THE BACK HATCH AND THE BACK WINDOW SHATTERED VIOLENTLY SENDING GLASS IN ALL DIRECTIONS. BOTH OF US WERE HIT BY FLYING GLASS PIECES. THE GLASS SHATTERED IN SO MANY SMALL PIECES THAT IT WAS THROUGHOUT THE INSIDE OF THE CAR AND COVERED A RADIUS ON HER DRIVEWAY AND LAWN OF ABOUT TEN FEET. THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON WHY THE GLASS SHOULD HAVE SHATTERED - THERE WAS NO OBSTRUCTION OR ANY NOTICEABLE ISSUE WITH HATCH BEFORE IT HAPPENED. *TR

THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING 3 TIMES WHILE DRIVING MY DAUGHTER HAD TO PUT THE FLASHER ON AND MUSCLE THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THE LAST TIME SHE WAS ALMOST HIT BY ANOTHER CAR. AT THE SAME TIME THE RADIO AND FDIM WOULD COME ON ERRATICALLY AND REALLY LOUD. TOOK THE CAR TO LARRY H MILLER FORD IN SLC UTAH THEY CHARGED HER 90.00 WHICH SHE NEVER AGREED TO, REPROGRAMMED THE CAR ONLY AND REPLACED NO PARTS. LARRY MILLER FORD SENT MY DAUGHTER OUT WITH A CAR THAT IS NOT SAFE, THE RADIO AND FDIM STILL GO OFF AND ON IN A STARTLING FASHION AND KNOWING THAT THIS PROBLEM WILL MOST LIKELY OCCUR AGAIN. I JUST WANT THE CAR FIXED SO ALL SAFETY HAZARDS ARE ADDRESSED.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, THE VEHICLE LOST PROPULSION AND REQUIRED THE DRIVER TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND RESTART THE VEHICLE TWICE IN A DISTANCE OF FIVE (5) MILES. AFTER SPEAKING WITH A SERVICE TECHNICIAN AT OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, HE INDICATED THAT THE ISSUE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY. APPARENTLY, THIS IS AN CONTINUAL ISSUE ON THIS MODEL AND I WAS ALSO INFORMED THIS PART (THROTTLE BODY) IS CURRENTLY ON A "NATIONAL" BACK ORDER. I WOULD THINK THAT IF THIS SPECIFIC PART IS ON A 'NATIONAL" BACKORDER, FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL BECAUSE IT IS OBVIOUS THERE IS A PROBLEM. *TR
