2002 Ford Escape Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2002 Ford Escape, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Reports by component

Ranked by how many owner reports name each component category

Percentages are of component mentions. A single complaint can name more than one component, so these do not sum to the total complaint count.

ON RT. 59, JUST SOUTH OF NORTHWEST HWY (RT. 14) IN BARRINGTON, MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE XLT WAS INVOLVED IN A BIZARRE INCIDENT OR ACCIDENT. WHILE SITTING STATIC ON LEVEL ROAD IN A LINE OF TRAFFIC WITH A TRAIN-CROSSING BARRIER ARM KEEPING TRAFFIC SAFELY WAITING FOR THE TRAIN TO PASS, MY VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD IN AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHILE MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY PRESSING ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE ENGINE RACED AT >= 4000 RPM. WITH CONTINUED BRAKING ACTION ON MY PART WITH NO VEHICLE RESPONSE, THE PASSENGER-SIDE FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE HIT THE 1988 FORD F150 TRUCK IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF ME. AS A SIDE NOTE, I HAD THE 2005 FORD RECALL WORK PERFORMED ON THE DEFECTIVE ACCELERATOR CABLE, WITH THE CABLE REPLACEMENT AT PACKEY WEBB FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER IN WHEATON, ILLINOIS. THERE IS A SAFETY-HAZARD RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE, AND I REFUSE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE EVEN IF THE APPROXIMATELY $4000.00 DAMAGES ARE REPAIRED, WHICH I HAVE NOT AUTHORIZED. I AM AN EXPERIENCE COMPUTER IT SOFTWARE/HARDWARE PROFESSIONAL, AS WELL AS AN ENGINEERING DESIGN CONTROLS EXPERT IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY, WORKING FOR A MAJOR PRODUCT MANUFACTURER (SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE). THERE IS A DEFINITE SAFETY RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THIS VEHICLE MAKE/MODEL, AND I WANT TO REPORT THIS INCIDENT TO THE PROPER AGENCY. THE INSURANCE COMPANY, FORD DEALERSHIP, AND THE AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER HAVE DONE NOTHING TO IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE FOR THE VEHICLE MALFUNCTION ON DESIGN DEFECT; THEY ONLY TREAT THIS AS A LOSS AND DID NOT PERFORM INITIAL COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS PRIOR TO COMPROMISING THE VEHICLE IN THEIR ACTIONS TO APPRAISE DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE. I NEED THIS INCIDENT PROPERLY INVESTIGATED AND REPORTED TO THE PUBLIC IF A SAFETY RISK IS CONFIRMED. *KB

HAD TO GET IT TOWED HOME LAST NIGHT BECAUSE WHILE DRIVING IT IDLED HIGH AND AS I BRAKE IT BARELY STOPPED AND WHEN RELEASING BREAK IT SPEEDS UP TO 50 OR MORE MPH AND I HAD TO KEEP MY FEET ON THE BREAK..I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE SWITCH OFF AND WAITED A WHILE AND TURNED BACK ON AND IT IDLED TO 4000 RPM AGAIN. COULD NOT SHIFT THE GEAR FROM PARK AND BREAK PEDAL WAS HARD. WHEN ARRIVING HOME TO BACK CAR IN DRIVEWAY TOWE GUY HAD NO PROBLEM WITH IDLE. THE FOLLOWING MORNING CRANKED AND WAS AT 1000RPM AT FIRST START. ALSO AC PRESSURE. CAR RUNS HOT BUT NO SMOKE WATER BUBBLES IN COOLANT RESERVOIR. MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE'S BACK WINDOW JUST EXPLODED PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. TEMPERATURE WAS MILD IN 70'S. NO RAIN.

NHTSA ID 10881819 · filed Jun 30, 2016

THE REAR LIFTGATE GLASS SUPPORT BROKE WHILE OPENING THE REAR WINDOW. I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY GRAB THE REAR WINDOW BEFORE IT COULD BREAK. I WOULD NOTE THAT THE FALLING REAR WINDSHIELD CAN STRIKE THE OPERATOR AND/OR BYSTANDER AND COULD CAUSE SIGNIFICANT INJURIES THAT COULD INCLUDE BRUISES TO THE HEAD, NECK OR BACK, AND POSSIBLY CUTS TO THE FACE, ARM OR HAND. I TOOK MY FORD ESCAPE TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER (FRIENDLY FORD OF MONROE, MI) TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED. I MENTIONED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT EXPLORERS AND MOUNTAINEERS HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME EXACT DEFECT AND HE TOLD ME TO SAVE MY RECEIPT IN CASE MY VEHICLE IS RECALLED IN THE FUTURE. THE REPAIR TO MY VEHICLE COST $236.00 AT THE DEALER. I NOTED THAT ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2004, FORD NOTIFIED THE OWNERS THAT IT WILL RECALL APPROXIMATELY 955,732 VEHICLES, SPECIFICALLY 2002 AND 2003 FORD EXPLORER AND MERCURY MOUNTAINEER VEHICLES TO REPLACE THE LIFTGATE GLASS STRUT BRACKETS AND/OR HINGES. I'M SURE THESE HINGES WERE ALSO USED ON 2002 FORD ESCAPES. BEFORE BUYING THE ABOVE LISTED FORD ESCAPE, I TEST DROVE SEVERAL OTHER ESCAPES. ON ONE OF THE ESCAPES THAT I TEST DROVE, I OPENED UP THE REAR LIFTGATE GLASS AND NOTICED THAT ONE HINGE WAS BROKEN AND THAT THE GLASS WAS HANGING FROM JUST ONE HINGE. I NOTIFIED THE DEALER OF THIS PROBLEM AND TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD NOT BE BUYING THIS VEHICLE. MY NIECE ALSO OWNS A 2003 FORD ESCAPE AND HER HINGE BECAME RUSTED OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. SEE "NHTSA RECALL" 04V442000 FOR DETAILS. *TR

I CALLED THE FORD DEALER AND COMPLAINED ABOUT MY MASTER CYLINDER LEAKING, THEY TOLD ME THAT RECALL WAS ALREADY PERFORMED ON MY VEHICLE IN 2012. I WANTED TO KNOW WHY WOULD MY MASTER CYLINDER BE LEAKING AGAIN TWO YEARS LATER? I WONDER IF THIS JOB WAS EVER DONE. I DON'T FEEL THAT THE CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A JOB THAT WASN'T PERFORMED. MY OTHER COMPLAINT IS MY REAR DOOR LATCH. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND TOLD THEM THAT I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY REAR DOOR LOCKING AND OPENING. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME I HAD TO PAY FOR THIS SERVICE. NOW I SEE THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE REAR DOOR LATCH BUT I WAS NOT INFORMED ABOUT THIS RECALL NOR DID I RECEIVE A RECALL LETTER. CONCERN THAT ONLY ONE CONNECTOR STRAP LOCKS ON GRACO AFFX BOOSTER SEAT AFTER CONNECTOR CLIPS ARE ATTACHED TO LATCH BRACKETS. OTHER ONE DOES NOT LOCK IN SO SEAT CAN BE PULLED OUT ON ONE SIDE. CALLED GRACO A BIT AGO AND THEY SAID THIS IS "NORMAL" AND NOT A DESIGN FLAW. HOWEVER, INSTRUCTIONS SUGGEST PULLING ON STRAPS WILL HOLD SEAT IN TIGHT UNTIL RELEASE BUTTON IS PUSHED. I AM READING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS IN ON-LINE REVIEWS AS WELL AS OTHERS WHO SAY THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM....WHICH SOUNDS LIKE IT IS A PROBLEM!. BOTTOM LINE: WITH ONE SIDE OF THIS SEAT NOT LOCKING TIGHT LIKE THE OTHER SIDE AND ABLE TO SLIDE LOOSE FROM FLUSH AGAINST THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE SEAT, IS THIS BOOSTER SEAT SAFE FOR MY CHILD TO USE, I.E., DOES IT RETAIN ALL ITS APPROVED CRASH SAFETY FEATURES WHETHER THE SEAT IS LOCKED IN TIGHT (AS SOME USERS APPEAR TO BE ABLE TO DO) OR SLIDES LOOSE ON ONE SIDE WITH SLIGHT PULLING, SUCH AS MAY OCCUR IN THE EVENT OF AN IMPACT?? NOTE: COULDN'T FIND DESCRIPTION OF BOOSTER IN DROPDOWN LIST FURTHER ON. IS GRACO AFFIX BOOSTER, MODEL 1839168 (RELATED VEHICLE INFORMATION: MODEL YEAR=2002, MAKE=FORD, MODEL=ESCAPE). *TR
