2006 Ford Expedition Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

What this page shows

Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2006 Ford Expedition, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

NHTSA ID 11097889 · filed May 25, 2018

I HAVE A 2006 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER 4X2 AND MY PROBLEM STARTED AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2010. IN 2011 I WAS IN TAMPA, FL AFTER GASSING UP I WENT TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR AND THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO SARASOTA FORD IN SARASOTA, FL WHERE I LIVE. THAT'S THE FIRST TIME NOW THE SECOND TIME I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK AT 4:30 AM IN NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER OF 2014 I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY AND WENT TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF. THE THIRD EVENT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY JULY 8, 2016 AT 4: 28 AM IN MY DRIVEWAY I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK AS I WENT TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF. I HAVE HAD TO MISS TWO DAYS OF WORK BY USING PTO/PAID TIME OFF WHICH IS MY VACATION TIME DUE TO THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER CONTINUALLY BREAKING OFF. SARASOTA FORD TOLD ME THAT THE SHIFT LEVER HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED SO THEY HAD TO LOCATE A USED PART FOR THE LAST REPAIR. I HAVE FILED TWO COMPLAINTS WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO WHICH THEY WILL NOT DISCLOSE ANY FINDINGS OR OTHER RELATED COMPLAINTS ONLY THAT THERE ARE NO RECALLS. I HAVE HAD SARASOTA FORD CHARGE ME FOR A NEW PART THEN TAKE SOME MONEY OFF AFTER I FOUND OUT IT WAS A USED PART TO WHICH THEY NEVER NOTIFIED OR ASKED ME IF IT WAS OK TO PUT USED PARTS ON MY VEHICLE. THE SALES MANAGER BILL GODFREY LIED TO ME WHEN I ASKED FOR COPIES OF MY PRIOR INVOICES IN REFERENCE TO THIS ONGOING ISSUE. HE STATED THAT THE RECORDS WERE NOT ON SITE WHEN IN FACT THEY WERE AS I BELIEVE ONE OF THE FILE CLERKS ACTUALLY TOLD US THESE RECORDS WHERE ON SITE IN A OFFICE AND SHE SUPPLIED US WITH THE DOCUMENTS.

I WAS DRIVING ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY, FM 185. I WAS DRIVING NORTHEAST WHILE THE OTHER DRIVER WAS SOMEWHAT STOPPED HEADING WEST, TRYING TO TURN SOUTH ONTO CATTLE DRIVE. THE OTHER DRIVER WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AWAITING TO TURN LEFT. THE OTHER DRIVER TURNED LEFT IN FRONT OF ME AS I WAS HEADED STRAIGHT. THE INITIAL IMPACT WAS DRIVER'S FRONT SIDE AND THEN DOWN THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. WE HIT, AND THEN MY VEHICLE DID A 180 DEGREE TURN WHICH TURNED MY VEHICLE AROUND FACING MY INITIAL PATH OF DIRECTION. MY AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I HAD CURTAIN SIDE AIRBAGS, DRIVER, AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS AS WELL. THE AIRBAGS OF THE CAR CAUSING THE ACCIDENT DID DEPLOY. *TR

I HAVE A 2006 FORD EXPEDITION AND MY WIFE ALMOST LOST CONTROL AND HIT A CAR WHEN THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD "SPONGY BRAKES" SINCE I BOUGHT IT AND HAD IT TO THE DEALER TWICE. THERE IS A TSB TO REPLACE THE FRONT CALIPER/ROTOR AND PADS AND FORD DID THIS BUT IT STILL FEELS SPONGY AND IS NOW LEAKING FLUID. THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE ON MANY EXPEDITIONS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL RATHER THAN A TSB. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THE BRAKES FAIL. I KNOW I HAVE HAD INSTANCES WHERE I LITERALLY NEED TO STAND ON THE BRAKES TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP. *TR

VEHICLE HAS BEEN SPUTTERING WHEN ACCELERATING AT ABOUT 40MPH. SPARK PLUGS ARE "SEERED" AND FORD MECHANIC TELLS US ITS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY BECAUSE SPARK PLUGS ARE CONSIDERED MAINTENANCE. THE MANUAL SAYS WE THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE IS 100,000 MILES AND WE ARE ONLY AT 76,000. IF THEY ARE KNOWN TO BE FAULTY AND WE ARE NOT NEAR THE SCHEDULED/RECOMMENDED MAINTEANCE THEN SHOULDN'T THIS BE A WARRANTY ISSUE? I THINK FORD IS MILKING ITS CUSTOMERS WITH FAULTY PARTS AS I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY BRAKES. IT FEELS AS IF I AM LANDING A PLANE WHEN I COME TO A STOP WITH ALL THE SHAKNIG AN RATTLING. I WAS TOLD THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE FORD BRAKES - THEY JUST WARP. *TR

MY CAR STALLED AT AN INTERSECTION LIGHT. IT WAS DRIVING POORLY-MAKING LOUD NOISES AND STICKING AS I PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL AS IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS GOING OUT. WE WERE TOLD IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY AND WE TOOK IT IN TO FORD. THEY TOLD US IT WAS THE TIMING CHAIN BUT BECAUSE THERE WAS EVIDENCE OF SLUDGE, THE WARRANTY CLAIM WAS DENIED BY FORD. THEY CLAIM WE DID NOT MAINTAIN OUR VEHICLE. WE BELIEVE IT IS A DEFECT IN THE SYSTEM. WE HAVE MAINTAINED THE OIL ON A REGULAR BASIS AND HAVE HAD OTHER MAJOR REPAIRS WITH THIS CAR. IT HAS HAD A NEW TRANSMISSION AT 35,000 AS WELL AS A NEW SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND ELECTRICAL FAILURE WITH THE STEREO/DVD SYSTEM. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY PRIOR EVIDENCE OF SLUDGE. AN ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED WHEN THE CAR STALLED. *TR

While driving yesterday i heard a pop. The 4th coil pack literally blew out from its spot. I have now had 3 coil packs blow out at random causing the holes that the bolt straps the coil pack to the spark plug to strip out. I have a transmission leak that will not stop and I've taken it in multiple times for repairs and it still is leaking. Since getting this vehicle i noticed at the electrical issue where everything including my headlights will shut off and then pop back on while I'm driving. My seat belt will not open so i can buckle and I'm now getting frustrated because I've spent a lot of money on this only to realize has had the same issue with previous owners and they for some reason were too embarrassed to report it but I'm not and I'm sick of dumping money into this damb thing!

2006 FORD EXPEDITION LIMITED. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS WARRANTY REPAIR DISPUTE AND DRIVER'S SIDE POWER WINDOW BEING EXTREMELY SLOW IN THE CLOSING OPERATION *TGW THE DEALER LUBED THE WINDOW AND STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM FOUND. AFTER COMPLAINING SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE WINDOW, THE DEALER FINALLY DETERMINED THERE WAS A PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE PARTS AND LABOR WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE PROBLEM EXISTED GOING BACK TO DEC 11, 2006 AND THE DEFECT WAS NOT ADDRESSED OR CORRECTED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER THE ORIGINAL FACTORY WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER STATED HE SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRS THAT WERE CALLOUSLY OVERLOOKED AND IGNORED BY THE DEALER. ALSO, THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT TO THE BODY MOUNT WAS SEVERELY RUSTED AND SHOWED SIGNS OF ACTUAL MATERIAL FAILURE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE CONDITION CAN AND WILL EVOLVE INTO THE ROOT CAUSE OF BOTH MECHANICAL AND SAFETY RELATED FAILURES. THE MAJOR BODY AND FRONT FRAME SUPPORT FAILING UNDER DRIVING CONDITIONS COULD LEAD TO ENGINE FAILURE, AND LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE MOST SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN, WAS THE FRONT BRAKE LINES WHICH WERE SHOWING SIGNS OF SERIOUS RUST. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE LINES COULD ONLY BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY IF THERE WERE SIGNS OF LEAKAGE. THE CONSUMER STATED CORROSION IN THE FORM OF RUST WOULD COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE STEEL BRAKE LINES, ALLOWING BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK OUT RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKING POWER. THE LEFT REAR DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM THE INSIDE, THE DRIVER'S FRONT DOOR HAD TO BE SLAMMED IN ORDER FOR IT TO CLOSE PROPERLY, THE FRONT AXLE DRIVE PINION WAS LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED.*JB
