2015 Ford Expedition Brakes Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the brake system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Brakes reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

For the second time the front brake calipers on my 2015 Ford Expedition have locked up causing premature brake pad and rotor failures, causing the rotors to turn blue because they got so hot, therefore causing my brakes to fade and coast into the intersection. (No accidents yet). First repair was done at a reputable shop under an extended warranty, it is now back in the same shop for the same issue.

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission inadvertently downshifted. Additionally, the service transmission warning light illuminated on and off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with wheel speed sensor failure, however; the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

Brake master cylinder is leaking and brake fluid into brake booster and low warning light came on. Refill the Reservoir and it leaks into brake booster over night.

I started my vehicle and the brake warning light and alarm came on. I checked to see if the E-brake was disengaged, which it was not engaged. I pressed the brake pedal and it immediately went to the floor. I checked under the hood for leaks and found the brake fluid level as extremely low. There were no leaks present. I refilled the brake fluid reservoir and checked the brake pedal. The pedal held, but it would slowly press down to the floorboard again. As I researched this issue, it was apparent the same issue was present that caused me to crash and total a 2015 Ford Edge. The 2015 and above Ford Eco-Boost engines either has a faulty brake line, or the brake fluid disappears into the Master Cylinder. To say this issue is a huge safety issue is big understatement. To crash and total a 2015 Ford Edge because Ford does not have the necessary parts available is just dangerous. To have a different Ford vehicle with the same dangerous issue is negligent in an extremely dangerous form. This is a known issue with Ford and yet Ford does not feel the need to cover such dangerous matters before someone is seriously injured or killed. How can I proceed with a complaint against Ford for the brakes failing on my 2015 Ford Edge, and causing a crash that totaled my vehicle? And, for the brakes failing on my 2015 Ford Expedition? Somehow this has to be stopped before someone really gets injured.

OUR VEHICLE EXPERIENCED TOTAL FAILURE OF THE BREAK MASTER CYLINDER AND BREAK BOOSTER. THIS WAS DUE TO BREAK FLUID LEAKING INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER, DEPLETING THE BREAK FLUID RESERVOIR RENDERING THE BREAK SYSTEM COMPLETELY INOPERABLE. THERE WERE NO WARNINGS BEFORE THIS TOOK PLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN THE FAILURE TOOK PLACE. THERE IS A SIMILAR RECALL ON THE FORD F-150 WHICH USES THE SAME PARTS AS THE EXPEDITION. RECALL # 20S31. WE HAVE ATTACHED ALL DOCUMENTATION OF THE REPAIR.

THE DAY AFTER WE BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED HAD 78,000 MILES ON IT WE WERE DRIVING ON A 4 LANE ROAD ABOUT 60MPH WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT PUT ITSELF INTO NEUTRAL. THE GAS PEDDLE WOULD NOT ENGAGE. AFTER WE TURN IT OFF AND ON A COUPLE TIMES WE WERE ABLE TO DRIVE IT AGAIN. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST THREE TIMES SINCE WE HAVE OWNED IT. WE BOUGHT IT 4 MONTHS AGO. ON THREE OTHER OCCASIONS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE RETURNING HOME FROM A 3 HOUR DRIVE ON A HIGHWAY GOING 60MPH DOWN A HILL AND IT WAS UNDER POWERED BUT STILL DRIVABLE. WE HAD ONE TURBO REPLACED HOWEVER THE LIGHT HAS COME ON AGAIN BUT THE DEALER COULDN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CLEARED AND THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. LAST WEEK WE WERE DRIVING IN TOWN THANKFULLY UNDER 30MPH AND THE BREAK PEDDLE GOT HARD AND COULDN'T BE PRESSED DOWN. A LIGHT CAME ON THAT SAID BREAK FAILURE WE HAD TO ENGAGE THE EMERGENCY BREAK TO STOP. WE HAD IT TOWED NO LIGHTS WERE ON WHEN IT GOT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY PUT 30 MILES ON IT TRYING TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM AND COULDN'T GET IT TO DO IT AGAIN. THIS VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE IT'S A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT EITHER SHUTS DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY OR THE BREAKS WON'T WORK AND CRASHES INTO SOMETHING OR SOMEONE. WE HAVE A VEHICLE NOW THAT WE CANNOT DRIVE AND CANNOT FIX AND IF WE TRADE IT IN WE WILL BE OUT A LOT OF MONEY AND THIS UNSAFE VEHICLE WILL BE PUT BACK ON THE LOT.

BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON WHILE DRIVING THEN NO BRAKES! UNLESS YOU PUSH THE PEDAL REAL HARD THEN IT MAKES A GRINDING SOUND! WHEN YOU STOP VEHICLE STOP THE ENGINE AND LET IT SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN START IT, THE BRAKE LIGHT STAYS OFF AND EVERYTHING WORKS FINE AGAIN! THIS HAPPENED TWICE! THE FIRST TIME WAS MARCH 2018 WE THEN TOOK TO DEALER AND THEY CHARGED TO INSTALL NEW BOOSTER AND SOME OTHER DEVICE. TODAY JAN 4TH 2019 THE SAME THING HAPPENED!

STARTED TO NOTICE VIOLENT SHAKING IN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED AT INTERSTATE SPEEDS. THE 2015 EXPEDITION 4WD HAS 19,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. AT VERY LOW SPEEDS THERE IS THE SAME SHAKING OF THE FRONT BRAKES---BUT MUCH LESS NOTICEABLE APPARENTLY DUE TO THE LOW SPEED. TRYING TO SCHEDULE WARRANTY INSPECTION AT LOCAL FORD DEALER.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
