2015 Ford Expedition Powertrain (other) Problems

Owner-reported complaints naming the powertrain system, filed with NHTSA

Data refreshed

Powertrain (other) reportsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

I am driving a 2015 Ford Expedition that utilizes the 6R80 transmission. I am actively experiencing the severe, dangerous highway downshifting failure described in Ford's F-150 safety recall. The truck is throwing codes P0705, P0706, and P0707. My car will go into limp-mode and lose acceleration while driving, light up the wrench and stop displaying the gear and idle high and accelerate at half the speed. When I turn my car off, it will not turn back on until the engine has cooled off.

Issue I’m having with my 2015 Ford expedition Limited, is on multiple occasions when I’m at highway speeds my vehicle downshifts and decelerates. While im driving through the city streets, my vehicle downshifts randomly and does not upshift. On these occasions I’ve had to safely pull over and turn my vehicle off and on. Doing so resolves the problem for about 10 miles, and then back to the same issue.

I was driving and going around 45mph when the wrench warning light came on and I lost the ability to accelerate. The car could only coast. I was able to coast to a parking lot. I turned off the car and restarted it. It seemed fine so I drove home. The same thing happened again a couple of days later. We checked the codes and it had a p2112 error code. We replaced the throttle body and it seems fine now. However this is the second time we have had to replace the throttle body. The same thing happened in 2018 with about 74000 miles on the car. We replaced the throttle body then also. From internet searches this seems to be a common problem. It is a big safety issue since the car loses the ability to accelerate unexpectedly. I was lucky I was able to coast out of the way each time without causing an accident.

Vehicle was placed in park and rolled down a driveway. Vehicle almost crashed through a house across the street if the owner did not jump in the vehicle and slam the brake. Problem has not yet been reproduced by a dealer. The part has not yet been evaluated by the dealer. Although, the dealer has done improper inspections of broken parts on the vehicle when it was under warranty in an attempt to get out of replacing them, so I do not trust the dealer to do a proper assessment.

The vehicle dashboard goes blank while driving, followed by the vehicle transmission slipping out of gear. This vehicle can be made available; however, it does not transfer gears. The problem has not been satisfactorily reproduced or diagnosed. The Ford service department simply stated that I needed a new transmission. The dashboard goes blank.

I was towing a trailer on a freeway when I suddenly got a "wrench" light stating my engine was cutting power due to heat and before I knew what to do there my vehicle was coasting, and so I quickly as I could changed lanes and came to a stop just a foot from the white line on the right. Cars and trucks are whizzing by me at highway speeds and was luckily off the road enough not to get hit. I had three other passengers at the time in my vehicle. what failed: after getting my passengers safely in other vehicles at the next rest stop, the trailer that I was towing was hooked up by another person on the same trip, I had my vehicle brought home on a flatbed. Fast forward to this week when it was finally diagnosed at a transmission shop. I was informed a transmission cooling line had ruptured, sending all the transmission oil out of the case and bringing me to an abrupt end on the freeway. Had I not been able to get over I would have come to a halt on the freeway, putting myself and my passengers as well as others behind me at risk. The transmission shop confirmed the issue. Since we were going at highway speeds when the transmission coolant line ruptures the oil gushes out and i have very little time before the transmission will not work. The only warning was from the engine as the transmission oil got pumped out, I'm assuming the engine revved to compensate, creating more heat, then the warning light which only happened seconds before I had no way to move. I was pretty scared, but I had other passengers in the vehicle, so I had to remain calm. At the time I had no idea what happened. I asked the transmission shop manager if that was a serviceable item (I'm pretty sure it's not) and he confirmed transmission coolant lines should last the life of the vehicle. My vehicle is only 8 years old--that is a catastrophic failure of a non-moving part leading to almost instant transmission failure. I asked if debris could have broken the line--he said no.

My 2015 Ford Expedition randomly dies when I drive it. The vehicle only has 60.000 miles on it, we took it to a ford dealership and they had the car for 3 months and cannot figure out what’s wrong with it even after having Fords Master mechanics try and remedy. After doing research it seems like this is a super common issue and Ford Needs to issue a recall to give its customers answers. My expensive vehicle is not safe to drive as it randomly dies without warning.

The contact owns a 2015 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that his wife informed him that upon parking and exiting the vehicle, the vehicle rolled approximately 20-feet forward and stopped upon hitting a telephone pole. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that no issues were found, and the gear shifter assembly was operating as designed. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing an excessive electrical drain. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the gear shifter assembly module was temporarily removed. As a result, the excessive battery drain ceased. The mechanic diagnosed that the failure was associated with either the gear shifter assembly or the module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was 90,000.

ON TODAY'S DATE, APRIL 9, 2019 AT APPROXIMATELY 4:20PM CDT, I WAS ENTERING FREEWAY ACCELERATING TO 40 MPH WHEN POWER WAS LOST AND QUICKLY DECELERATED TO UNDER 5MPH. ENGINE STILL RUNNING, BUT IT WENT INTO 'LIMP HOME' MODE, NO FASTER THAN 5MPH. WAS ABLE TO GET TO DISTRESS LANE. WRENCH SYMBOL DISPLAYED ON INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. TURNED OFF ENGINE AND CHECKED OWNERS MANUAL...SYMBOL INDICATED POWER TRAIN TROUBLE. TURNED ON STARTED OK, AND CONTINUED TO FREEWAY SPEED. ABOUT 1 MILE LATER, LOST POWER AGAIN, SLOWING TO 'LIMP' MODE. THIS TIME CHECK ENGINE AND WRENCH LIGHTS CAME ON AND ENGINE NOTICEABLY ROUGH RUNNING. TURNED OFF/ON STARTED OK, EXITED FREEWAY AND DROVE CITY STREETS HOME, ABOUT 3 MILES. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT NEVER WENT OFF. WRENCH LIGHT DID GO OFF AFTER 2ND RE-START. MANUAL RECOMMENDS HAVING FORD DEALER CHECK IT OUT. THAT'S WHAT I'LL BE DOING TOMORROW. THIS SPONTANEOUS LOSS OF POWER HAS RISK OF CAUSING A CRASH FROM OTHER DRIVER'S AS SUDDEN DECELERATIONS WITHOUT BRAKE LIGHT WARNING IS VERY DANGEROUS.

WHILE TRAVELING IN THE PASSING (3RD) LEFT LANE ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WITH SPEEDS OF 65 TO 70 MPH, THE VEHICAL TOTALLY LOSS POWER, MOTOR STILL RUNNING BUT JUST AT AN UNEVEN POOR IDLE, STILL IN GEAR, I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE, IT DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING YET THE MOTOR WAS STILL AT THE POOR IDLE. ON THE DASH COMUPTER A WRENCH APPEARED WITH "SEE MANUAL" ALONG WITH A SMALL CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ABOVE THAT. I WAS FORCED TO GET OUT OF THAT DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH NO POWER, COASTING THROUGH 3 LANES WITH MY WIFE WAVING OUT THE PASSENGER WINDOW TO LET MY POWERLESS CAR DRIFT OVER. ONCE OFF THE HIGHWAY, THE MOTOR WAS STILL POORLY IDLING, GIVING IT GAS DID NOTHING, STILL JUST A ROUGH IDLE. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT AND MIRACULOUSLY I ONCE AGAIN HAD CONTROL OF THE ACCELERATOR. I WAS STILL 3 HOURS FROM HOME WITH ALL HIGHWAY DRIVING AHEAD OF ME, WHICH I DID DOING 55MPH IN THE SLOW LANE & READY TO TURN OFF ROAD. I BOUGHT A NEW VEHICLE AS TO NOT HAVE PROBLEMS, LET ALONE THE MOST DANGEROUS EPISODE OF OUR LIVES. WHAT REALLY IS UNACCEPTABLE IS THAT I JUST HAD A 70K MILE CHECKUP AT A LOCAL FORD DEALER WHERE I WAS TOLD THEY RECCOMEND CHANGING MY TRANSFER CASE OIL ALONG WITH AN OIL CHANGE & TIRE ROTATION. I WAS GIVEN A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH FOR A ROAD TRIP. I REFUSE TO PAY ANYTHING FOR A FLAW IN THEIR DESIGN, ESPECIALLY BEING A DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE.

IN THE PAST WEEK, ON 2 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, MY 2015 FORD EXPEDITION HAS STALLED WHILE DRIVING. FIRST INSTANCE, WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 45MPH ON SMALL COUNTRY ROAD AND ACCELERATING, VEHICLE STALLED AND CAME TO A ROLLING STOP, WITH SERVICE INDICATOR LIGHT AND "SEE MANUAL" ILLUMINATED ON DASHBOARD. ONCE STOPPED AND SHIFTED INTO PARK, VEHICLE STARTED AND DROVE AGAIN NORMALLY. SECOND INSTANCE (APPROX. 2 DAYS LATER), WHILE ENTERING INTERSTATE FROM ON RAMP, APPROX. 45MPH AND ACCELERATING, VEHICLE STALLED. LUCKILY, WE WERE ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER PRIOR TO COMING TO COMPLETE STOP. ONCE SHIFTED INTO PARK, VEHICLE STARTED AND DROVE AGAIN NORMALLY. FORD SERVICE TOLD US THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE THROTTLE BODY, AND WILL COST NEARLY $700 TO REPLACE. I'VE DONE SOME ONLINE RESEARCH OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS, THE THROTTLE BODY SEEMS TO BE ONE OF, IF NOT THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINTS BY 2015 EXPEDITION OWNERS. IF THIS HAPPENED DURING RUSH HOUR ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE, PEOPLE COULD GET KILLED. PLEASE INVESTIGATE.
