What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2014 Ford Mustang, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am reporting a safety hazard and a failure by Ford Motor Company to properly remedy the mandatory Takata Airbag Recall. Following the recall repair, a technician reassembly error left the airbag warning light permanently illuminated, meaning my Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is completely disabled and will not deploy in a crash. I took the vehicle to Astro Ford in Mississippi for resolution. The Service Manager, Hunter Landry, attempted to reset the system three times and confirmed a permanent safety fault exists in the exact recall area. However, Ford’s proprietary dealership software is actively blocking the dealer from pulling the diagnostic codes or proceeding with the repair without a corporate override code. Ford Corporate customer service agents have repeatedly refused to route this request or issue the override code to the dealer, effectively blocking the repair of a failed federal safety recall component. The dealer requires a corporate email sent to [email protected] to authorize the diagnostic waiver and bypass the software block. Ford's corporate refusal forces me to drive an unsafe vehicle with no working airbags. Desired Resolution: I request that the NHTSA compel Ford Motor Company to immediately issue the corporate diagnostic override code to Hunter Landry at Astro Ford so this defective federal safety recall can be properly diagnosed and repaired at no cost to me.
My son was driving to school. He was not speeding or any type of reckless driving. He hit an ice patch. His car spun and flew thru the air. The airbag compartment opened but it was defective. All metal shards came flying out of it causing multiple lacerations. He also lost consciousness from the impact and I was told by hospital ER doctor the airbag was defective and he was suffering from a very serious concussion.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to a low gear. The check engine warning light illuminated and remained illuminated after the first failure. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road, restarted, and the contact continued driving. The contact stated that during the last failure, while attempting to restart the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the residence, and a hand-held diagnostic machine retrieved DTC: P1500. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 138,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated while driving at 65 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted to first gear. The check engine warning light illuminated, and the instrument cluster was red. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with a failed transmission ring sensor. The contact was informed that the transmission ring sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the failure was intermittent, and occasionally the vehicle lost motive power. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 172,000.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact’s brother owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. While the owner was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle drifted over to the left, crossed into the other lanes, drove into a ditch, and crashed into an object at the end of the ditch, causing the vehicle to become airborne. The vehicle landed in a nearby field and came to a complete stop. The contact stated that after several impacts, the air bags deployed. The contact stated that due to the impact, the driver was unable to state what had caused the vehicle to drift over to the left before crashing into the ditch. The driver received injuries to the lower body, L1 vertebrae, chest, and a fractured back. Medical attention was needed, and the driver remained in the Intensive Care Unit. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and remained at the tow yard with extensive damage. The contact was informed that collision coverage was required to repair the vehicle. The contact was unsure if the vehicle was deemed a total loss. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I was driving down the road and just lost power steering , a message came on and said loss of power steering assist , I pulled o er cut the car off waited a few min then started it back up and it was working again , then about 10 miles down the road it did it again

From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and occupied or while driving, the vehicle accelerated independently. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was towed to the residence and then was towed the following day to a dealer to be diagnosed; however, the contact was unaware of the diagnostic result. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 175,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while reversing, the rearview camera turned blank. The contact also stated that while driving at 15-20 MPH, the beeping sound that the vehicle made while reversing activated independently. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V082000 (Back Over Prevention) and contacted the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that his vehicle could not be repaired under the recall as his VIN was not included. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA for assistance with including his VIN in the recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V082000 (Back Over Prevention). The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
the following problem happened to me a few years ago (twice within a couple of months) and again, 2 days ago. Each time I was standing at a traffic light when all of a sudden it accelerated at full throttle. I practically stood on the brake pedal, but the car was inching forward, as I put the transmission into park. This was not a subtle situation, it was dangerous. The engine went from idle to screaming within 2 seconds. I ruled out the floor mat as it was in the proper position and snapped into the floor. It did not cause any warning lights to come on. in May, I had the oil changed, at which time they suggested that they clean the throttle body, which they did. They never heard of the above problem.
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35-70 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted to first gear. The contact stated that the rear wheels locked up and the vehicle jolted forward. The air bag, fuel, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked and unoccupied, water leaked into the doors. The contact stated that a dealer was contacted. The contact stated that while it was snowing the water in the door would freeze. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the contact refused to leave the vehicle at the dealer, and the contact declined to pay for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 129,983.
My clutch pedal went out before a moth of ower ship, my transmission 3rd gear went out before a month of owner ship, my bumper second time flying off on me 2nd month of owner ship.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2014 Ford Mustang. The contact stated that while driving approximately 80 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted from fifth gear to first gear, causing the vehicle to abruptly decelerate. After turning off and restarting the vehicle, the vehicle operated but in LIMP Mode. The vehicle was taken to the local service center who diagnosed that the wheel speed sensor and lead frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 140,000.
I currently own a 2014 Mustang GT with a manual transmission and notice my emergency brake release button was cracking. The button is made of cheap plastic and the dealer does not have a replacement release button. They only sell the whole emergency brake, which I feel that Ford should she be responsible of replacing the emergency brake button, since this is a safety issue that you cannot engage the emergency brake or disengage the emergency brake button when parking your vehicle on a hilly driveway or any hill at all. Which I leave in Northern California that is very hill and feel that if my car ever comes disengaged out of 1st gear it would cause serious damages to others, such as crashing into a building or other cars or even a fatality.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Power steering assist stopped working, shutting my traction and advanced traction control off
WHEN I WAS ON MY WAY BACK HOME FROM WORK MY CAR STARTED TO SHAKE AND THEN THE POWER STEERING FAULT CAME UP ON MY DASH. SO I HAD NO POWER STEERING AND WHEN THAT WENT OUT I WAS GOING ABOUT 60 AND I ALMOST WRECKED MY CAR BECAUSE OF IT.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim

From owner reports, verbatim
THE WHEELS ARE MACHINED IN A NON-STANDARD WAY ON THE BEAD SURFACE AND MOST REPLACEMENT TIRES CANNOT BE SEATED ON THE BEAD OF THE WHEELS. THE OEM WHEELS HAVE MACHINED SLOTS IN THEM NEAR THE BEAD SEATING AREA & THE AIR LEAKS OUT THESE SLOTS WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO SEAT THE BEAD TO INSTALL THE NEW TIRES. THESE WHEELS ARE 18" X 8" SIZE AND CAME ON THE FP6 APPEARANCE PACKAGE WITH MY VEHICLE FROM FORD. I SPENT 2 DAYS AT TIRE STORES WAITING FOR INSTALLATION OF NEW TIRES ON MY CAR. SEVERAL BRANDS OF TIRES WERE TRIED AND MOST WON'T SEAT ON THE BEAD OF THESE WHEELS. ALL OF THE TIRES TRIED ARE THE STOCK OEM SIZE OF 235/50R18. IT APPEARS THAT FORD CHOOSE TO LIGHTEN THE WHEELS BY MACHINING THESE SLOTS IN THEM, BUT THE DOWNSIDE IS THAT YOU CANNOT REPLACE THE TIRES SINCE MOST BRANDS WON'T SEAT ON THE BEAD WHEN BEING INSTALLED. AFTER TRYING SEVERAL SETS OF TIRES, THE TIRE STORE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO GET ONE INSTALLED, BUT IT COST ABOUT TWICE WHAT I PLANNED TO SPEND ON THE NEW TIRES.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD MUSTANG. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V319000 (AIR BAGS); HOWEVER, THE PART FOR THE RECALL REPAIR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE VIOLENTLY JERKED FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR WAS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS OFF, THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM REACTIVATED ON ITS OWN. THE CONTACT PROCEEDED TO DRIVE AND THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AGAIN. WHEN THE CONTACT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE THE VEHICLE, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL LOCKED AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AT HIGH SPEEDS ON ITS OWN. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE TURNED AGGRESSIVELY TO THE RIGHT, BECAME AIRBORNE, FLIPPED OVER, AND LANDED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS. THE WHEEL REMAINED LOCKED AND THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE MOVED. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED INJURIES TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND A CASE WAS OPENED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 87,000. Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE REAR VIEW MIRROR IN MY MUSTANG VIBRATES ON ANY ROAD WITH IMPERFECTIONS SO THAT YOU CANNOT DISTINGUISH WHAT TYPE A VEHICLE IS BEHIND YOU. I HAVE HAD IT REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE NEW ONE DOES THE SAME. THIS ISSUE IS ON A MAJORITY OF MUSTANGS, ACCORDING TO FORUMS, AND I BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IF YOU CANNOT DISTINGUISH IF THERE IS A SAFETY VEHICLE BEHIND YOU.
WIPERS ARE VERY NOISY AND HAVE BEEN SINCE DELIVERY OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
MY 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS WAITING IN MY PARKED CAR IN A PARKING LOT FOR ME AND ABSENTMINDEDLY TWISTING ONE OF THE SEAT BELTS AROUND HER WRISTS. THE SEATBELT LOCKED AND AS SHE TRIED TO GET IT TO RELEASE, THE BELT WENT IN FURTHER AND HER HANDS WERE TIGHTLY BOUND TO THE SEAT WHERE THE SHOULDER BELT RETRACTS. SHE WAS UNABLE TO FREE HERSELF AND WAS SCREAMING FOR HELP. SHE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO REACH HER PHONE ON THE FLOOR BY KICKING OFF HER SHOES & THEN USING HER TOE TO TELL "SIRI" TO CALL MOM. WHEN I GOT OUTSIDE, I COULD NOT FREE HER AND HER HANDS WERE TURNING PURPLE. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO CUT THE SEATBELT OFF. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I WOULD EVER HAVE ANTICIPATED. IT WORRIES ME THAT A YOUNGER CHILD COULD PLAY WITH IT AND FALL ASLEEP FOR EXAMPLE, AND THE PARENTS MAY NOT REALIZE UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 FORD MUSTANG. WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE.
