What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2019 Freightliner Cascadia, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
While approaching an overpass the collision mitigation system activated my brakes nearly causing the vehicle behind me to rear end my trailer, hit my brakes so hard i was thrown forward.
My 2019 Freightliner Cascadia forward collision brakes activates automatically while on the road without any other vehicle nearby, airbrake malfunction (not released appropriately and fully released) and extremely fuel consumption.
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.

Truck will apply brakes when no objects or vehicles are around. It is very scary and unexpected when the system does this.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
:steering. Yes :was unable to steer properly into a curve in road, resulting in truck slamming into ditch. :no :yes :no incident occurred 10/29/2021. we never received any indication of issues until weeks after. upon looking further into the recall we saw that the notices were set to be sent out 10/30/2021. one day after incident. furthermore we also see another recall that was never fixed from 9/20, of which we never were sent any info on and remains not addressed per this website. POWER STEERING PUMP WAS BAD SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK. NOW IT TAKES A LOT OF STRENGTH TO TURN THE WHEELS WHEN I PARK ( LOW RPM) THE DEALER CHERGED ME OVER $ 350 AND THEY SAID THAT THEY COULD FIND THE PROBLEM. JUNK !! IT FEELS LIKE IS LOCKING UP EVEN ON HIGHWAYS WHEN ENGINE CRUISES AT LOW RPM 2 : HEADLIGHTS BAD DESIGN . THE LED / TURN SIGNAL : THE BULB ITSELF IS AN LED LIGHT, BUT IS WAY TO CLOSE TO THE PLASTIC BARS INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT, AND THAT CAUSES BURNS IN THE PLASTIC , RESULTING IN A VERY DIM TURN LIGHT SIGNAL AND DAY LIGHT DRIVING LIGHTS . THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO BUY ANOTHER HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY CRAP ALSO

Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.

I am writing to bring to your attention a potentially dangerous situation caused by what I believe to be a manufacturer design flaw with the SS 1034797 M2, 108SD, 114SD Coolant Level Sensor P/N 06-93316-002. On [XXX], one of our trucks (VIN: [XXX]) experienced a low coolant warning and an automatic engine shutdown while traveling on the interstate in a construction zone. As you can imagine, the sudden stoppage of a tractor-trailer in the traffic lanes of a freeway presents an extremely hazardous situation, not only for our driver but for all motorists in the vicinity. For us as a motor carrier, this is compounded by the likelihood of legal liability resulting from any collision involving a stationary truck in such conditions. The root cause of this incident appears to be the failure of the magnet within the surge tank to maintain its buoyancy. When the magnet sinks to the bottom of the tank, it signals the engine control module (ECM) that the coolant level is critically low, triggering an engine shutdown. While I understand the intent is to protect the engine from potential damage, this design flaw creates an unacceptably dangerous scenario—especially since, in many cases, the engine is not actually at risk of damage. In this instance, I instructed the driver to unplug and after a 15-minute period, he restarted the truck and drove to a nearby truck stop. Remarkably, the truck remains operational without the sensor repair, further underscoring the superficial nature of this issue. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. We have encountered similar sensor failures across our fleet, but this particular event was the most severe. While I am not an engineer, it seems logical that the coolant level sensor should be paired with a high-temperature reading before an engine shutdown is initiated. TRUCK FLOATS/SWAYS SIDE TO SIDE DOWN THE ROAD MAKING IT HARD TO CONTROL AND REQUIRING CONSTANT CORRECTION LEADING TO OVERCORRECTION AND ADDITIONAL SWAYING. TRUCK HANDLES CURVES POORLY. YOU CANNOT GOOD THE STEERING WHEEL IN ONE PLACE AROUND A CURVE, YOU MUST CONSTANTLY REPOSITION/CORRECT THE WHEEL THROUGHOUT THE CURVE. SUSPENSION IS POORLY DESIGNED, CAUSING TOO MUCH MOTION FOR THE DRIVER TO CONSINRESPOND TOO, LEADING TO FATIGUE AND MUSCLE ACHES. THIS IS SPECIFICALLY REGARDING ALL OLD DOMINION FREIGHT LINE 2 AXKE DAYCAB 2019 FREIGHTLINER CASCADIA'S. *JS

POSSIBLE YEAR MANUFACTURING DEFECT. REAL-WORLD CONDITIONS EFFECTIVELY DISABLE VISABILTY OF DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR. DURING MOST RAIN EVENTS WATER FROM THE ACTION OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TO THE DRIVER SIDE, CAUSES THAT WATER TO COLLECT ON DRIVER'S WINDOW. AT 60 MPH. THAT WATER CREATES A OBSTRUCTION OF THAT MIRROR ASSEMBLY. ALTHOUGH TEMPORARY, THIS CAN LAST FOR MINUTES.
