The defect: THE BRAKE PEDAL LINKAGE IS ATTACHED TO THE SERVICE BRAKE VALVE PUSHROD WITH A CLEVIS PIN. THE TWO COTTER PINS THAT RETAIN THE CLEVIS PIN MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED DURING ASSEMBLY.
The risk: IF THE COTTER PINS WERE NOT INSTALLED, THE CLEVIS PIN MAYFALL OUT DURING BRAKE USE, CAUSING THE BRAKE PEDAL LINKAGE TO SEPARATE FROM THESERVICE BRAKE PUSHROD, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKES AND A POSSIBLE VEHICLEACCIDENT.
The remedy: INSPECT THE BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY AND INSTALL COTTER PINS TO THE CLEVIS PIN IF THEY ARE MISSING.

Safety recall

NHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
Manufacturer communication
Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
