What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2017 Genesis G80, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
My 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L, VIN [XXX], has approximately 43,840 miles and intermittently slips or shifts improperly between approximately third and fifth gears while driving and causes harsh jolts forward. Jenkins Genesis confirmed the condition, stated that the transmission was slipping from the 3–5 clutch area, and recommended complete transmission replacement. The malfunction is unpredictable and creates a risk of sudden loss or interruption of propulsion while merging, crossing an intersection, changing lanes or driving at highway speed. A driver may press the accelerator but not receive the expected forward power. A [XXX] infant is regularly transported in the vehicle. The vehicle also has a faulty right-front ABS wheel-speed sensor, a passenger seat-belt safety-system communication fault, and intermittent electrical or sensor warnings. Genesis TSB 21-AT-010HG-1 applies specifically to the 2017 G80 and addresses shift flare or harsh shifting during the 2–3, 3–4 and 4–5 shifts. It requires transmission-solenoid, wiring-harness and fluid inspection procedures. TSB 19-AT-014HG also addresses harsh or delayed shifting in 2017–2018 G80 vehicles and provides electronic shift-data testing. The written repair estimate does not establish whether all applicable TSB diagnostic procedures were completed. The model also has electrical recall history, including NHTSA recalls 24V-107 and 21V-161. I am not claiming the recalls caused the transmission failure, but the concurrent transmission, ABS, seat-belt and electrical faults warrant investigation. I request that NHTSA examine similar G80 complaints involving slipping, shift flare, delayed shifting and loss of propulsion. WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE GAS ACCELERATOR- THE CAR ONLY MOVES AT A FEW MILES PER HOUR. THIS IS INTERMITTENT BUT MAKES THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE AND VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE IN TRAFFIC. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED BUT NOW GENEIS SAYS IT IS ANOTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUE AND THE CAR NEEDS A NEW HARNESS- BUT GENSIS NO LONGER MAKES THIS PART (THE HARNESS) SO GENESIS EVEN UNDER MY WARRANTY CANNOT FIX THE CAR GENESIS SAYS IT IS A HARNESS ISSUE AND THEY DON'T HAVE AND CANNOT GET THE PART- HENCE THEY CANNOT FIX THE CAR
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
This vehicle experienced an engine overheating failure while driving, five days after a cooling-system repair (radiator hoses, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs) had been completed at the dealership. The dashboard displayed an explicit "Engine has overheated" warning, and the vehicle could not continue to be driven. The vehicle was returned to the dealership. Per their own written statement, there were "no signs of engine damage related to the overheating concern" at that time. The vehicle's own mileage record shows it did not leave the dealership's lot for nearly a month afterward, despite a written claim that the shop foreman had personally test driven it before release. After that release, a fractured metal bracket was found in the engine compartment near the serpentine belt, along with multiple additional loose, missing, or unseated fasteners throughout the engine bay. The dealership's technician stated he had no reason to have inspected that area. The cause of the fracture and the discrepancy with the technician's account have not been resolved. Separately, the vehicle's Lane Keeping Assistance/Lane Departure Warning system has been non-functional, was twice described by the dealership's technician as "working," and both times disproven by independent testing showing the system displaying "system off." The vehicle has also been producing smoke while driving and idling, consistent with a fluid leak burning off a hot engine component, accompanied by a worsening chemical/exhaust-like odor in the cabin, not yet diagnosed. This is reported given the overheating history, the undiagnosed cabin odor with possible carbon monoxide exposure risk, and engine-bay damage discovered following dealership service, in case relevant to safety monitoring of this repair pattern.

Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Hyundai Motor America and Genesis Motor America are recalling my 2017 Genesis G80 vehicle to address a risk with anti-lock break system (ABS) modules because it could malfunction internally and case an electrical short over time potentially resulting in engine compartment fire. I contacted the dealership and they claim that do not have the required part to resolve the issue. Also they do not have an estimated delivery date for the part. Please advise.
The contact owns a 2017 Genesis G80. The contact received an email from Carfax of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V160000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact called the local dealer and it was confirmed that the part was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
As I am driving and I make a turn, the wheel actually locks and I cannot steer. It was very frightening. At first I thought it was the lane change device, but I made sure that was off, and it happened twice more. I had the car towed to the Napleton Hyundai dealership in Lake park, FL and they said the entire steering column needs to be replaced. They quoted over $10,000 for the repair. THe car is a 2017 Genesis G80 with 23,000 original miles. THere were no warning lamps or other symptoms.

THE DOORS ON THE VEHICLE EITHER REAR OR OTHER WILL NOT OPEN FROM OUTSIDE OR INSIDE AND PERSON CAN GET TRAPPED IN THE SEAT. PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HYUNDAI. HYUNDAI HAS EXTENED RECALL WARRANTY BUT NOT FOR THERE SISTER COMPANY GENESIS WHO HAS SAME PROBLEM. INSPECTED BY DEALERSHIP AND CASE NUMBER PROVIDED BY GENESIS # 20424715 NO WARNINGS GIVEN AND HENCE NO ABILITY TO PREVENT THERE ARE NUMEROUS CARS WITH SAME DEFECT
My trunk iced over and I accidentally hit the key fob to release the trunk. Next time I go to access the trunk, to my surprise, it does not open. I tried the key release, dash release, manual key unlock, and interior emergency trunk release - none worked. There was no way the to access the trunk. I had to wait a few weeks to take it to the dealer and I’m now sitting here waiting for the resolution. Either way, there is no time or circumstance I should not be able to access the trunk automated or manual; however, that is the design flaw case with this model Genesis.

Both passenger side tires had to be replaced. The car has less than 9,000 miles. Front tire had a sidewall bubble. Rear tire had a sidewall tear with metal showing. Service men detected tire defect during routine oil chage. I do not recall any incidents that would have caused these defects. I'm a 66 year old woman and don't drive carelessly. These tires were damaged too easily and with too few miles on them. Can I apply for any replacement costs? P275/35/ZR19 and P275/40/ZR19 The vehicle was damaged and repaired on 10/8/2020. There was no tire damage at that ime.

On May 9, 2023 @ 3pm. We were traveling at @60 mph when another vehicle pulled out in front of us. I hit brakes and swerved to miss the vehicle (which I did miss). I slid @ 350 feet, hit two divided highway medians/curbs and hit a concreted double legged (with at least 4 crossbars) stop sign with large solar panel and flashing lights. The front driver side of was crushed, the windshield and sunroof shattered as the solar panel and lights of the sign hit the car. The car was towed by the insurance company (Geico) and is awaiting their inspection. There was a police report/crash report created (Arkansas [XXX]) There were no warning lights or other indication of problems on the dashboard prior to the accident. The front passenger hit head on front and middle side beam and door glass. Has concussion. No airbags deployed and I don't think the automatic braking ever alerted or engaged.
