Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.

My 2017 Genesis G80 3.8L, VIN [XXX], has approximately 43,840 miles and intermittently slips or shifts improperly between approximately third and fifth gears while driving and causes harsh jolts forward. Jenkins Genesis confirmed the condition, stated that the transmission was slipping from the 3–5 clutch area, and recommended complete transmission replacement. The malfunction is unpredictable and creates a risk of sudden loss or interruption of propulsion while merging, crossing an intersection, changing lanes or driving at highway speed. A driver may press the accelerator but not receive the expected forward power. A [XXX] infant is regularly transported in the vehicle. The vehicle also has a faulty right-front ABS wheel-speed sensor, a passenger seat-belt safety-system communication fault, and intermittent electrical or sensor warnings. Genesis TSB 21-AT-010HG-1 applies specifically to the 2017 G80 and addresses shift flare or harsh shifting during the 2–3, 3–4 and 4–5 shifts. It requires transmission-solenoid, wiring-harness and fluid inspection procedures. TSB 19-AT-014HG also addresses harsh or delayed shifting in 2017–2018 G80 vehicles and provides electronic shift-data testing. The written repair estimate does not establish whether all applicable TSB diagnostic procedures were completed. The model also has electrical recall history, including NHTSA recalls 24V-107 and 21V-161. I am not claiming the recalls caused the transmission failure, but the concurrent transmission, ABS, seat-belt and electrical faults warrant investigation. I request that NHTSA examine similar G80 complaints involving slipping, shift flare, delayed shifting and loss of propulsion. While driving the engine simply stops and won't restart. When this happens, the key fob won't lock the car or unlock the trunk. The trunk opening button won't open the trunk. It just flashes the parking light and gives a sound.

At 63,230 miles the engine oil pressure light would illuminate on my 2017 Genesis G80. I took it to the dealer and the technician found the oil pressure switch on my car went bad and in the words of the mechanic was leaking internally. This is a known issue by Genesis/Hyundai as they are performing repairs in Korea (where this vehicle is built and assembled) for this very problem. But in America they are refusing to honor the warranty which under powertrain is valid for 10 years/100,000 miles. Proper function of the engine is clearly a part of the powertrain. The warranty further goes on to state that under engine, "gaskets and seals" are covered. The repairs I had to have performed at great expense for a failed oil pressure switch seemed clear to me under the warranty. Not only a known issue and covered where the car is made, but they seem to know they have a huge issue based on Genesis Forums and their complaints the numbers are large; they don't want to have to make it right for the owners.

DTN DL

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the presence of substandard and dangerous driver’s-side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN). These inflators were not supplied, approved, or authorized by the vehicle manufacturers and have primarily been found in vehicles that previously experienced a crash and underwent airbag replacement using non-genuine parts. These dangerous inflators have ruptured during deployment, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to metal fragments entering the vehicle cabin. To date, Hyundai is aware of three people who have died while driving a Hyundai vehicle with one of these substandard replacement airbag inflators that deployed in what likely would have been a survivable crash. NHTSA has issued a public advisory urging vehicle owners and service professionals to have vehicles inspected if there is reason to believe that a non-genuine replacement airbag may have been installed. Vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles, prior airbag deployments, or unknown repair histories may present a higher risk. NHTSA strongly cautions against self-inspection by vehicle owners and recommends inspection by trained technicians.

DTN DCS

AIR BAGS

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent safety advisory regarding dangerous, counterfeit driver‑side airbag inflators manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd. (DTN), that have been identified in U.S. vehicles following prior crashes, theft, or non‑certified airbag replacements. These inflators are not approved for use, may rupture during deployment, and have caused serious injuries and fatalities. Please see attached announcement, provided by NHTSA, for more details.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.

This bulletin provides repair information for the dark chrome trim when stains are present. Some stains may occur from hard water or cleaning chemicals used during a car wash. Follow the procedures below to replace the affected dark chrome moldings.

25-GI-009G

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Certain Genesis vehicles may experience an inoperable horn from moisture or carbonization at the contact point. This bulletin provides a guide to inspect and replace the horns.

25-01-024H EM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Some vehicles may exhibit a loss of connectivity or interruptions in the middle of using Bluelink Service functions. This may be due to an irregular disconnection on Verizon's communication network. If you are experiencing issues with remote commands, or other Bluelink services, please see the instructions below to reestablish the connection via the AVN pinhole reset method.

Manufacturers file copies of the bulletins they send to dealers with NHTSA. These often describe diagnostic or repair procedures for a known condition. They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
