What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2008 GMC Acadia, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
Transmissions will not shift out of 1st gear. And puts out a 752 code. This can happen at anytime. Vehicle will suddenly lose power at any time.
Check engine light came on for the TCM. Car has had issues shifting (very rough shifting) and the manual shift option does not work. Was told the TCM had to be replaced. Attempt was made to replace it with a refurbished TCM but that couldn't be programmed to the car. Was then told I would have to buy a brand new one, which is very expensive, and that there was no guarantee that would fix the problem. Car can not be driven over 20mph without risking burning up the transmission. Car also jerks forward very hard when trying to gently accelerate.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Lift gate closes by itself I have to put a pole to hold it up and it won’t hit me, it says the air bags needs to be serviced, stabilitrak keeps going off, ball bearing needs work. Radio won’t turn on no sound on air signals, the body chasis something popped while driving, the tracking control keeps turning off, the seats move while driving, catalytic converter are moving car only go 12 mpg.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while her daughter-in-law was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made a popping sound, and then the fuse box near the passenger's side headlight caught fire. No warning light was illuminated. The contact's daughter-in-law was able to exit the vehicle. There were no injuries, and medical attention was not received. Bystanders called the police and fire departments. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. Police and fire department reports were filed. The fire chief informed the contact that the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. The vehicle was towed to the residence and had not yet been deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim

The traction control turns on and then the shifts don’t work and I can’t drive since there is no speed also the rpm and the gas the speed and the battery gages start flickering up and down then I turn off the truck and it continues to work fine but after 40 miles or so it does it all again

THIS VEHICLE WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN START SWAYING FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND THE STABILITRAK LIGHT WILL COME ON. IN ADDITION, THE TRANSMISSION WILL SUDDENLY SEIZE UP, LOSING ACCELERATION AND NEARLY CAUSING A CRASH. THE ENGINE WILL ALSO STATE THAT IT IS OVERHEATING, ALL OF A SUDDEN AND THE VEHICLE WILL SHUT ITSELF OFF AND SMOKE WILL START COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE GOING BETWEEN 35 AND 65 MPH. ON THE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. MY CHILDREN IN THE BUCKET SEATS IN THE BACK WERE SLEEP AND THEIR HEADS HIT THE WINDOW. THEY SUSTAINED INJURY. THAT WAS ON A REGULAR STREET AND THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 35 MPH. I WAS WITHIN OR SLIGHTLY UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED SWAYING UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN THE ROAD IS WET, IT WILL SWAY FROM SIDE TO SIDE ON SIMPLE CURVES IN THE ROAD. I HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED TWICE. DUE TO THE SAFETY CONCERNS AND FEAR OF MY FAMILY BEING FATALLY INJURED, IT WAS AROUND CHRISTMAS TIME. I HAVE HAD TO PARK THE VEHICLE. I HAVE CONTACTED GMC BY PHONE SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO RESPONSE IN RETURN. I SPOKE WITH SOMEONE AND WAS INFORMED TO REPORT IT TO NHTSA. MAYBE SOMETHING CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE A DEATH OCCURS.

ALSO, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT IMMEDIATELY START WHEN TURNING THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BATTERY CONTINUED TO LOSE POWER AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND WATER LEAKED INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER AND HIGHLY BUICK GMC (3535 WEST LOOP 820 SOUTH, FORT WORTH, TX) WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
The headlights don't work even after replacing. It rains in the vehicle from the sunroof. The gas tank isn't registering even after fixing it. So the engine doesn't know how much to put out etc etc and it makes the car jerk horribly. This vehicle is a fire hazard due to raining inside on everything upfront. I have kids I pray nothing happens!!
MY PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE I GOT THE CAR IN MARCH OF 2020. I HAVE JUST REPLACED MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS OCTOBER OF 2020 AND NOW THE DRIVER SIDE LIGHTS DOESN'T WORK. ON THE DASHBOARD THE LIGHT THAT'S SUPPOSE TO SHOW WHEN YOUR BRIGHT'S ARE ON, DOESN'T COME ON ANYMORE AND I WAS IN MOTION WHEN I REALIZED THEY HAD STOPPED WORKING.

The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he noticed that a section of the rear spring was on the ground. After inspecting underneath the vehicle, he noticed that the rear springs were fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer informed the contact that the rear springs needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,572.
The service stability track warning will come on while driving. It will then make the SUV shut off. This is really terrifying since it happens while driving. After the SUV shuts off, you have to wait a couple minutes before you're able to restart. The last two months, the service airbag warning will come up on the screen out of no where. It will come on while driving and setting stationary. Water will pour out from the glove box while driving.
Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
VEHICLE WAS SOUTHBOUND ON COUNTY ROAD AND ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN AT THE INTERSECTION, WHEN THE CAR STRUCK THE SOUTH EMBANKMENT OF THE T INTERSECTION, AS DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO NAVIGATE THE TURN. NONE OF THE SIDE OR FRONT AIRBAGS IN THE CAR DEPLOYED AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH. I AM ALSO UNSURE IF THE SEAT BELT HAD OPERATED CORRECTLY (SEAT BELT WAS BEING WORN AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH). THE DRIVER'S HEAD HIT THE SIDE WINDOW AND AS A RESULT HE SUSTAINED A HEAD INJURY AND AN EYE INJURY RESULTING IN OPTIC NERVE DAMAGE AND COMPLETE LOSS OF VISION IN THE EYE. I UNDERSTAND THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE AIRBAGS ON THESE VEHICLES WITH A POSSIBLE RECALL ISSUED. I DO HAVE ALL THE CORRESPONDING ACCIDENT REPORTS, MEDICAL REPORTS, ETC.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 GMC ACADIA. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE SEAT BELT AND SERVICE AIR BAG INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. DURING TIMES OF HEAVY RAIN OR WHEN DRIVING THROUGH A CAR WASH, WATER ENTERS VEHICLE INTERIOR. WATER CAN BE HEARD MOVING AROUND IN HEADLINER OF REAR WHILE VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN. WITH VEHICLE IN MOTION WATER CAN BE SEEN LEAKING OUT OF AIR BAG LABEL ON DRIVER SIDE PANEL BETWEEN WINDSHIELD AND DOOR. INSPECTED DRAIN TUBES FROM SUNROOF AND FOUND THEM TO BE COMPLETELY CLOGGED. UPON CLEARING DEBRIS CLOGGING THE TUBES AN EXESSIVE AMOUNT OF WATER CAME SHOOTING OUT AND TUBES DRAINED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR A NON STOP STREAM. APPROXIMATELY A WEEK OR SO LATER, STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS STARTING VEHICLE. TESTED BATTERY AND IT WAS FINE. TESTED ALTERNATOR AND STARTER, BOTH FINE. TWO WEEKS LATER CAR WOULDN'T START AGAIN. UPON AAA ARRIVING TO JUMP MY VEHICLE WE DISCOVERED THE ENTIRE BATTERY COMPARTMENT BEHIND PASSENGER SEAT WAS COMPLETELY FILLED AND BATTERY SUBMERGED IN WATER. FURTHER INSPECTION FOUND ENTIRE FLOOR BOARD SATURATED AND HEADLINER. MOLD WAS ALSO FOUND ON SEATS, SEAT BELTS, CARPET, AIR VENTS, SUN VISORS, AND DOOR PANELS.

2008 ACADIA 50,000 MILES. A WHINNING NOISE FROM THE TIME I START THE CAR UNTIL THE CAR IS CUT OFF. REPAIRMAN STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THEY HAD NO FIX FOR IT NOW. HE TOLD ME IT WOULD BE OKAY TO DRIVE..........NOT VERY HAPPY!!!! *TR
RECENTLY, WHEN LOADING THE CARGO AREA OF MY 08 GMC ACADIA, THE VEHICLE STARTED ROLLING FORWARD (THE IGNITION WAS OFF, AND IN "PARK"). IT ROLLED APPROXIMATELY 2 FT. BEFORE "PARK" ENGAGED. (MY 2 GRANDSONS WERE PLAYING IN MY DRIVEWAY A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY). AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT AT THE GMC DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED THE SERVICE MGR TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A "NORMAL" CONDITION, ACCEPTABLE BY GM, THAT THE PARKING GEAR "PAWL" CAN ACTUALLY ROLL UP TO 2 FT. BEFORE ENGAGING. IT DOESN'T SEEM PROBABLE, OR EVEN POSSIBLE THIS CAN BE CONSIDERED TO BE A "SAFE" CONDITION. WHEN I ASKED WHO WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURIES RESULTING FROM THIS SITUATION HIS RESPONSE WAS, "GM". *TR
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
BOUGHT FIRESTONE ALL SEASON TIRES DOT V60M AL1 . TIRES WORN DOWN VERY VERY QUICKLY ALL THE WAY ACROSS IN LESS THAN 5K MILES. VEHICLE ALIGNMENT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN DONE A FEW MONTHS PRIOR. DEALER TRIED TO CLAIM IT WAS ALIGNMENT , ALIGNMENT SHOP SAID IT WAS A TIRE ISSUE. I BELIEVE THE TIRES RUBBER HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPOUND FORMULA. FIRESTONE REFUSES TO COVER THE TIRES. SAID THAT EXTREMELY FAST TREADWEAR ISN'T COVERED. IMAGINE THAT! PAID $657.00 FOR A SET OF TIRES THAT WITHIN 5 MONTHS NEED REPLACING . HAD MY WIFE GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT AND BEEN INJURED OR KILLED. I WOULD OF MADE ANOTHER EXAMPLE OUT OF FIRESTONE LIKE WHAT WAS DONE IN THE 90S WHEN FORD EXPLORERS WERE TURNING INTO CRASH DERBY CARS DUE TO DEFECTIVE TIRES MADE BY THIS COMPANY FOR ODDLY A COMPARITIVELY SIZED VEHICLE.
2008 GMC ACADIA HAS SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH SAFETY RECALLS AND DEALERSHIP RESPONSE. *NJ WATER ENTERED THROUGH THE PASSENGER SIDE ROOF. THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DRIVER SEAT MADE A NOISE WHILE BEING ADJUSTED AND THERE WAS A NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN IT WAS COLD.*JB THE RADIO AND NAVIGATION SCREEN WENT OUT AND THE DRIVERS SEAT DID NOT MOVE. UPDATED 01/23/09. *JB

Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
WE BOUGHT OUR 2008 GMC ACADIA IN JANUARY 2008. THE BATTERY DIED IN JULY 2008 WHILE VACATIONING IN CANADA LEAVING US STRANDED. AFTER IT WENT DEAD SEVERAL MORE TIMES THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED IT. THE AIR CONDITIONING WENT OUT SEVERAL TIMES IN 2010 AND WE HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THE AC RECHARGED TWICE SINCE. IN JULY 2013 WE HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED WHEN IT STOPPED SHIFTING INTO GEAR. OUR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED IN JANUARY OF THAT YEAR. THE DEALERSHIP DID GET GM TO PAY HALF BUT IT STILL COST US ALMOST $2,000.00. NOW IT IS AT THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN AND WE HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN AS IT LOST POWER STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS. WE ARE HAVING IT REPAIRED AT AN ESTIMATE OF NEARLY $1,800.00 MORE. THIS VEHICLE COST ABOUT $36,000.00 IN 2008. SINCE THEN WE HAVE PAID THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS JUST TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD AND SAFE. THIS IS A LEMON AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A RECALL FOR BOTH THE TRANSMISSION AND LOSS OF STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS. I SEE THAT BOTH OF THESE ARE COMMON PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR OUR EXPENSES. *JS
WE PURCHASED OUR 2008 ACADIA IN 2011, IT HAD APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. LESS THAN THIRTY DAYS AFTER PURCHASE WE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT ROTORS. AT 40,000 MILES WE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKES; THE AIR CONDITIONER BACKED UP, WHICH REQUIRED MAINTENANCE TO THE BLOWER MOTOR; AND THE HEAD LIGHTS WENT OUT, WHICH REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. AT 45,000 MILES THE REAR STRUTS WENT OUT, WHICH REQUIRED REPLACEMENT; AND WE HAD TO REPLACE TWO TIRES. AT 60,000 MILES THE WATER PUMP WENT OUT AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AT 55,000 MILES THE FRONT STRUTS WENT OUT, WHICH NEEDED REPLACING, ALONG WITH FOUR NEW TIRES, AND A NEW SET OF HEADLIGHTS. AT 60,000 MILES THE REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AT 70,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT, WHICH ALSO REQUIRED REPLACEMENT. THE FINAL INCIDENT HAPPENED ON 6/10/13 AT 74,000 MILES, WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN. I WAS GOING 50 MILES AN HOUR ON A HIGHWAY, AND THE ENTIRE CAR SHUT DOWN. THE STEERING CONSOLE LOCKED WITH THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION, I HAD NO ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKES DID NOT FUNCTION EITHER. I HAD TO USE THE PARKING BRAKE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, BARELY AVOIDING A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE.
