The defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: EXTENDED CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND 4-DOOR UTILITY VEHICLES. THE REAR BRAKE LINE CAN CONTACT THE LEFT FRONT FENDER WHEEL HOUSE INNER PANEL JUST ABOVE THE CHASSIS FRAME. A HOLE COULD BE WORN IN THE BRAKE LINE ALLOWING A LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID.
The risk: REAR BRAKE EFFECTIVENESS COULD BE REDUCED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The remedy: DEALERS WILL RELOCATE THE BRAKE LINE POSITIONING CLIP, INSPECT THE BRAKE LINE FOR WEAR, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE BRAKE LINE.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 GMC C10753. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH AND ENGAGING THE BRAKE PEDAL THE VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED; HOWEVER, AN APPOINTMENT WAS SCHEDULED SO THAT THE MECHANIC COULD DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND SEND A REPORT TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 98V226000, COMPONENT: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS INCLUDES THE IDENTICAL FAILURE THAT THE CONTACT HAS EXPERIENCED; HOWEVER, THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE OCCURRED FOR 4 YEARS. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT HIS BRAKES ARE ADJUSTED EVERY 4 MONTHS. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
