What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
6.2 liter engine failure @ just over 100,000 miles. Prior to 100k miles I had taken to the dealership for sporadic loss of oil. They confirmed that the oil had been upgraded previously as instructed by GM so must be another source of the leak. Engine locked up while driving down the road. Had to have the vehicle towed and the mechanical said the motor is shot, and related to lower camshaft bearing issue. The only warning signs were the low oil light which happened around the mid 90k miles, so I would monitor that. When the engine failed there was no low oil light on, it just started shaking/vibrating and then kicked out. I think hte mileage read right around 103,000 approx. when it died.
Often blows blue smoke and oil out exhaust, and uses more engine oil that would ever be expected, especially when pulling a load. I took it to Rusty Drewing GMC dealership IN Jefferson City, Missouri, and they told me everything was fine, that they could not find a problem.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
I HAD COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER LESS THAN ONE YEAR AFTER PURCHASE IN MAY OF 2019 THAT THERE WAS A SHUDDERING NOISE AND THE TRANSMISSION HESITATES AND SEEMS TO LOCK UP AT TIMES. I WAS TOLD IT WAS "JUST HOW THE 8-SPEED TRANSMISSION OPERATES". IT HAS CONTNUED THROUGHOUT OWNERSHIP AND NOW SEEMS TO LOSE POWER AND VIBRATES EXCESSIVELY DURING ACCELERATION.
Engine went out very devastating $10k out of pocket
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
I am getting warning signs on the dashboard saying that my brake booster performance has failed and I need to service the brake booster , the brakes are very hard to press, I need longer stopping distances, and traction control and stability control towing harness my speed has been limited to 43 mph and it's saying that the mass air flow system is has low circuit
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH, the rear wheels locked up. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and determined that the brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Walker Bros Chevrolet (700 Erie St, Edinboro, PA 16412); for a second opinion, and the transmission and TCM were replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to the Customer Satisfaction Program: N192272400; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
The vehicle has experienced repeated Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction warnings that appear related to a prior GM recall for ESC malfunction codes. These warnings occurred before and after dealer repairs. The ESC malfunction may have affected other safety systems. I was involved in two separate accidents while driving this vehicle, and in both incidents the airbags did not deploy. In one accident, the vehicle struck multiple objects in a frontal collision at significant speed. The airbags did not deploy at all. I lost consciousness, sustained injuries, and have experienced ongoing physical symptoms since the incident. The ESC malfunction warnings continued even after GM dealership repairs following each accident. The defects were not resolved, and the vehicle has remained unsafe and inoperable. The vehicle has been inspected by a GM dealership multiple times, but the issues were not corrected. The ESC malfunction warnings and airbag non‑deployment have been reproduced and confirmed through these service visits. There were warning messages related to ESC malfunction prior to the failures, and these messages continued to appear. The combination of ESC malfunction, loss of control, and airbag non‑deployment suggests a possible cross‑module safety failure involving the airbag system and ESC. I have contacted GM’s corporate safety team and GM’s executive support, but the responses I received did not address the safety‑defect issues. I have sent follow‑up emails and made phone calls but have not received further assistance. The vehicle remains unsafe to operate, inoperable, and available for inspection.
I am retired and have always bought GM vehicles which are taken care of with required oil changes etc. This one I have only owned 25,000 mi each year (I have owned two years). So, when purchased it has high 50,000 miles not sure of exact, and it has only been driven 2 years. When calling escalation at GM, they act as though it doesn't matter and too bad. 110,000 miles and the truck needs a new motor. This is what we are told and 10,000 more than the initial 1500 to tear it down. This truck is not broken due to us, this is a problem with the manufacturer and the responsibility needs to be addressed. My husband has a heart issue and he almost didn't make it home. I'm not accepting that nothing be done, since next we need a lawyer and a media appointment. This isn't right when you see thousands of people with the same GMC Sierra trucks online with complaints of the same valve and motor issues. This needs completely replaced and not by a customer, by the manufacturer. How can 1500 people new wrong on one sight stating the same as we have had. This person who is responsble for reporting and making sure we are safe needs to be fired. I am writing my representatives, senators etc to let them know this is going on. No one should pay for the mistakes of bad engineering. PERIOD.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim
Transmission blew on a 7 year old vehicle. Was replaced entirely and is NOW having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM AGAIN!
The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 with the 6.2L V8 engine began making a rattling or tapping noise at 45 mph. No warning lights appeared on the dashboard. When starting the engine and idling, a similar noise can be heard from the engine. I bought the vehicle used from a dealership one month ago, with 80,000 miles, and the second issue is the complete failure of the blind spot warning system on both mirrors. It was a one-owner vehicle with a clean Carfax. I am scheduled to take the vehicle to the dealership's service department for a full inspection.
Steering
Reports naming the steering system — racks, columns, power-steering assist and steering linkage.
From owner reports, verbatim
driving and truck started to misfire (due to collapsed lifter after shop diagnosis) that then made my truck do reduced steering assist and my wheel got super hard to turn that almost sent me in the ditch at 60MPH and also turned off my Electronic Stability Control and also turned on my Service Parking Brake drove straight to the shop and parked it very lucky i did not crash and the fact that multiple people this has happend too GM need to recall from the 2019 and up for these lifters after reading about it.
While driving 13-15mph down the road the front right upper control arm ball bearing sheared off causing the tire to lean in rubbing the wheel well, forcing my truck to veer to the left across the other lane of traffic. Luckily there wasn't any car next to me.
Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Often blows blue smoke and oil out exhaust, and uses more engine oil that would ever be expected, especially when pulling a load. I took it to Rusty Drewing GMC dealership IN Jefferson City, Missouri, and they told me everything was fine, that they could not find a problem.
I am the owner of a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD equipped with the 6.2L L87 V8, VIN [XXX], currently at 177,271 miles. On [ADD DATE] while driving 40-45 mph westbound on [XXX] near XXX in [XXX], in a school zone, the engine suffered sudden catastrophic internal failure with complete loss of propulsion and would not restart. No prior warning lights or low oil pressure warning. Vehicle required tow from school zone. GMC dealer inspected and verified catastrophic internal failure. Dealer stated verbally failure is either camshaft broken in half or timing chain sprocket/pulley broken off or loose causing timing chain to come off. Timing cover was not removed to confirm. Dealer stated engine is not repairable and quoted $13,500 for new engine replacement only. I have copies of the work order and the dealer's written statement verifying internal failure and replacement recommendation. Engine and vehicle have been retained. Body & structure
Reports naming the vehicle structure, frame, body panels, doors, hood and trim.
From owner reports, verbatim
The lights on the dashboard is indicating that the hood is unlocked and the security system is being tampered with. Hood is closed and it disengage auto start and the alarm goes off every 10 minutes.
Rear sliding glass window is leaking water around the exterior frame. This is addressed in TSB 18-NA-383 but not covered under any warranty. My rear seats and carpet are becoming wet. I am concerned about the possibility of mold and an electrical short/fire resulting from water intrusion. There are many reports and discussions on the internet regarding this issue. Full window replacement estimated at $1300. Patchwork repair with caulk is estimated at $600 with no guarantees of success. I would expect GMC to cover the replacement of the rear glass in kind and remedy any other damage to my vehicle due to water intrusion into the cabin area.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Several months ago while having my truck serviced, I asked the repair shop to inspect the ball joints on the passenger side because they would make a popping noise when turning the wheel. The shop inspected them and said that was a normal sound due tot he factory lift. Recently I was driving home and about to turn into my lane when the front passenger wheel assembly collapsed under the truck due to the a upper ball joint failure separating the brake line and loss of steering. At the time, I was only going about 25mph and the truck slid to a stop on its own. The truck has 65,000 miles on it and if this had happen at highway speeds personal injury to myself and others would have been likely. The repair cost were $7,500. Fortunately I purchased an extended warranty which covered all but $1,700 of the repair.
While driving 13-15mph down the road the front right upper control arm ball bearing sheared off causing the tire to lean in rubbing the wheel well, forcing my truck to veer to the left across the other lane of traffic. Luckily there wasn't any car next to me.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.

The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that the trailer lights flashed intermittently while the vehicle is turned off. Additionally, the contact stated while driving with a trailer hitched to the vehicle, the messages "Trailer Disconnected" and "Trailer Connected" were intermittently displayed, and the running and marking lights were inoperative. The contact related the failure to GM TSB Numbers: 20-NA-198 (Trailer Running Lights Shut Off Due to Excessive Load on the Running Lamp Circuit), PIT5747B (Diagnostic Tip - Trailer Lighting Complaints with Trailering App RPO U1D) and N192213550 (Service UpdateTrailer Integration Module Software Error). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was determined that the failures were due to a wiring or software failure. The contact was informed that the failure was a factory defect because the fuses were in good condition. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted yet. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.
Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
Rear powersliding window leaks on passenger side
Rear window leaks as also reported by GM when truck was manufactured (GM Service Bulletin 18-NA-383). Water from leaking rear window gets into the electronics used for safety systems as well as rear camera and eventually disables safety systems.
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim

Issue 1: Driver side front seat airbag connector separated disabling the airbag. (repaired at my cost) Issue 2: Transmission (10 speed auto) developed stutter and skip consistent with complaints resulting in recall of 2020 (next model year truck) due to risk of rear wheel lock up. GM needs to include the 2019 models that were built as 2019 (as 2020) in one of the plants while they continued to build the 2018 as 2018 "classics" during the changeover. My cost to repair will be $3600 and there is not guarantee that the new valve body is any better or if GM is simply giving me another 46k miles to wait for another failure.

Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that the wheels on the vehicle were not what was listed in the description of the vehicle. The vehicles installed on the vehicle were 17-inch wheels instead of the 18-inch wheels listed as the original equipment for the vehicle. The contact was concerned that the difference between the OEM wheels and the wheels installed on the vehicle could cause ABS failures while driving the vehicle. The contact referenced NHTSA ID Number: 21V985000 (TIRES), but the VIN was not included in the recall. The dealer was not notified of the issue. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 44,741.
My end of year 2019 produced GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 V8, 4WD X31 4 door truck had a serious malfunction that could have caused great harm. I was driving down my driveway at approximately 20 mph when the truck's rear wheels locked up, stopping the truck instantly, sending me into the steering wheel narrowly missing the windshield with my face. After a moment, I attempted to drive again to move the truck out of the travel path. When I did, the truck back wheels completely locked up again (when I reached 6mph). I had the truck towed to my local shop and was told that it was the transmission locking up making the wheels lock up. The part (transmission) that was ordered for repair was on national backorder and took over two months to get my truck repaired and functional again. I was fortunate to have a warranty (now expired) and pay a percentage of the repair fee, however, the total repair fee was near 12,000. This was paid for by myself and my warranty company. Considering the part was on national backorder, I know that these types of problems are occurring with many of these trucks. I learned of the recall for this same problem that my truck had and checked the recall for my vin. To my complete surprise, my truck was not listed as being recalled, even though the EXACT same problem occurred with my truck. I would like to get the cost of the repairs refunded considering it took GM so long to recall the problem leaving me to pay for their errors. This is not a cheap automobile and was expected to be built well. I am very fortunate that I was not on a major highway or traveling at a high rate of speed when this happened. It was a very scary ordeal being propelled into the windshield of your vehicle when driving due to abrupt, extremely unusual 100% mechanical failure of no fault of your own. This recall should be expanded to include ALL vehicles that have the faulty transmission, including mine. Repair receipts can be provided. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that the tailgate was occasionally opened unexpectedly while driving at various speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure might be related to an unknown recall that included vehicles or model year 2021-2025. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.

Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
On March 14 2026 i was driving from [XXX] . To [XXX] to have my tires checked because i felt a strong vibration on my steering column and truck itself, it was getting worse so i took it to my mechanic who does my regular maintenance on truck. After inspecting tire ( [XXX] 55 R20) was called over and shown that my front passenger side tire had a flat spot, it looked deformed mechanic informed me that the tire had separated from radial. And i need to get another tire right away, since there was non in stock we did the next best thing we took the front passenger tire the affected tire put it in the back and put the rear good tire up front. The next day i was on my way to purchase the replacement tire when the tire blew out. I was on a heavily traffic road [XXX] . I managed to take control of truck doing about 40 mph at the time and drove it off the road to a safer spot to look at damage. Well the passenger rear tire witch was originally on the front that had the separated radial blew a chunk out of the inner sidewall. I put on the spare and went and replaced the tire with another goodyear new tire. On march 28 as i was coming home from [XXX] late at night the driver side rear tire blew as well again had to put on spare and next day took to local mechanics in [XXX] , and checked tire and again i was told that the tire separated from radial and that was the cause of blew out, they inspected all the tires at this point since this was the second tire from the same DOT set with less then 12000 miles that had separated. Well they found a third tire that had aldo separated and had a flat spot on driver side front tire, now there are 3 tires from the same set, coincidence, i dont think so i replaced the second and third tire. One the third day April 1, 2026 the passenger side front tire blew as well, now i have 4 tires that had radial separation with less then 12000 miles and less then a year old, in a mater of a month. Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
The backseat middle passenger seatbelt failed to release causing my [XXX] child to become stuck and restrained in the seatbelt blocking his circulation, therefore for the safety of my child I had no choice but to cut the seatbelt. I have tried to report it to the dealership and insurance company but both advised that this is not something that is covered by insurance or warranty.
