CRANK POSITION SENSOR FAILURE - STALL
IN A LETTER DATED NOVEMBER 7, 2007, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) REPORTED TO THE OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) THAT IT WILL CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL (07V-521) TO REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR (CKP) IN APPROXIMATELY 12,000 MODEL YEAR (MY) 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO AND GMC SIERRA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 8.1 LITER ENGINES MANUFACTURED ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 15, 2000.ACCORDING TO GM, THE CKP CAN FAIL INTERMITTENTLY OR PERMANENTLY.A PERMANENT CKP FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN AN ENGINE STALL WITHOUT RESTART.AN INTERMITTENT CKP FAILURE COULD CAUSE THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, THE VEHICLE TO RUN ROUGH OR THE ENGINE TO STALL BUT ALLOWS RESTART.AS A REMEDY, AN IMPROVED CKP WILL BE INSTALLED IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES.THE RECALL CAMPAIGN WILL START IN DECEMBER 2007. DURING THE PRELIMINARY EVALUATION (PE06-016), AND THIS EA INVESTIGATION, GM AND ODI INDEPENDENTLY CONDUCTED DETAILED REVIEWS OF CERTAIN FIELD DATA TO UNDERSTAND THE NATURE AND RATE OF SUBJECT VEHICLE STALLING DUE TO CKP FAILURES.GM AND ODI REVIEWED GM'S WARRANTY CLAIMS FOR THE CKP WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF ASCERTAINING AN ESTIMATE OF THOSE CLAIMS REPRESENTING AN ENGINE STALL WHILE DRIVING.THE CKP WARRANTY CLAIMS WITHOUT VERBATIM TEXT WERE THE LARGEST SEGMENT OF WARRANTY CLAIMS.USING THOSE CLAIMS, GM SURVEYED VEHICLE OWNERS TO GATHER ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TO DETERMINE IF THE CLAIM WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A STALL WHILE DRIVING EVENT.BASED ON THE SURVEY, GM ESTIMATED THAT APPROXIMATELY 49% OF ALL WARRANTY REPAIRS FOR THE CKP INVOLVED A STALL WHILE DRIVING.ODI?S REVIEW OF GM'S SURVEY DATA PRODUCED A HIGHER ESTIMATE (71%) FOR STALL WHILE DRIVING.GM FURTHER ESTIMATED THE RATE OF STALL WHILE DRIVING FOR THE SUBJECT VEHICLES OVER TIME.IT ESTIMATED STALLING WHILE DRIVING RATES OF 1.6%, 4.6% AND 8.9% AT 1, 3 AND 6 YEARS IN SERVICE RESPECTIVELY.ODI'S REVIEW OF THE GM'S SURVEY DATA FINDS HIGHER ESTIMATED STALL WHILE DRIVING RATES OF 2.2%, 6.8% AND 13% AT 1, 3 AND 6 YEARS IN SERVICE RESPECTIVELY. ODI ALSO CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF VEHICLE OWNERS USING CONSUMER COMPLAINTS REPORTED TO BOTH ODI AND GM.THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO ASCERTAIN THE POTENTIAL SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF AN ENGINE STALL DUE TO THE ALLEGED DEFECT.WITH RESPECT TO THE ABILITY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AFTER A STALL, 11% REPORTED IMMEDIATE RESTART, 69% REPORTED DELAYED RESTART AND 20% REPORTED NO RESTART.OVER HALF NOTED AT LEAST ONE ENGINE STALL INCIDENT AT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 40MPH. ABOUT ONE-THIRD NOTED THE VEHICLE WAS STRANDED EITHER PARTIALLY OR FULLY IN A LANE OF TRAFFIC AFTER THE ENGINE STALL.ALL OF THE CONSUMERS SURVEYED NOTED MULTIPLE STALLING EVENTS PRIOR TO PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND REPLACEMENT OF THE CKP.BASED ON GM'S DECISION TO CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL, THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED.

ACCELERATED RIGID BRAKE LINE CORROSION RESULTED IN BRAKE LINE FAILURE AND COMPLETE LOSS OF VEHICLE STOPPING ABILITY. BRAKE LINES ARE INSPECTED REGULARLY AND DID NOT APPEAR RUSTED. VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH WHEN OPERATOR STEPPED ON BRAKE TO SLOW AND STOP VEHICLE. BRAKE PEDAL FELT SOFT AND THEN PRESSED COMPLETELY TO FLOOR WITHOUT ANY BRAKING ACTION. OPERATOR USED EMERGENCY BRAKE TO SLOW AND STOP VEHICLE. VEHICLE REQUIRED IMMEDIATE TOWING AS IT WAS NOT ROAD WORTHY AND WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITHOUT BRAKING ABILITY.

WHILE ON A HILL HOLDING THE VEHICLE WITH THE BRAKES ACTIVATED, A LARGE AMOUNT OF WHITE SMOKE CAME BILLOWING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE FLUID WAS CLEAR AND DRIPPING ON THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THE BRAKE RESERVOIR DROPPED WITH SUCCESSIVE BRAKE APPLICATIONS. AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A REPAIR FACILITY, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT MULTIPLE FIXED METAL BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODING AND ONE HAD ENOUGH TO CORROSION TO CAUSE A FAILURE OF THE METAL CAUSING A LEAKING BREAK LINE. ALL FIXED METAL BRAKE LIES WERE REPLACE AT A VERY HIGH EXPENSE DUE TO THE LABOR TO INSTALL THE NEW LINES. PART WERE ONLY A FRACTION OF THE LABOR TO INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES ALONG THE BODY FRAMING. IRONICALLY, THE REPAIR SHOP OWNER HAD A 2500 SERIES GM PICKUP TRUCK WHICH EXPERIENCE THE SAME BRAKE LINE FAILURES JUST MONTHS BEFORE. IN ALL MY YEARS OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP, I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE FAILURE OF A FIXED METAL BRAKE LINE. THEY ARE USUALLY MAKE OF MATERIALS WHICH PREVENT CORROSION OF THE METAL AND THEREFORE REMAIN USEFUL FOR STOPPING THE VEHICLE THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE USEFUL LIFE.

WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE ENGINE STOPPED WORKING / STALLED. SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL AND TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL. THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THE ASSISTANCE OF POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES HAD TO BE CAREFULLY STOPPED . THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! AFTER LOOKING AT AN ON-LINE FORUM, THE VEHICLE WITH THE 8.1 LITER ENGIN HAD SOME VEHICLES RECALLED WITH A CAM LOBE SENSOR FAULT WHICH CAUSES THIS TO HAPPEN. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT IN THIS RECALL. HOWEVER, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS NEW, THEY HAD ALREADY REPLACE THE SAME PART WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS 3-5 MONTHS OLD. I QUESTIONED THEM AS TO THE REPLACEMENT PART AS THE FIRST PART ONLY CAUSED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, NOT COMPLETELY DISABLING THE ENGINE. IT MAY BE THEY REPLACE THE FACTORY ORIGINAL PART WITH A PART WHICH WAS DEFECTIVE AND COVERED BY THE RECALL. IN EATHER CASE, A ENGINE ON HEAVY DUTY VEHICLE WHICH QUITS AND DISABLES THE NORMAL BRAKES AND STEERING IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

WAS DRIVING DOWN A STRETCH OF STRAIGHT ROAD IN WARRENTON, VIRGINIA WHEN I WENT TO PRESS THE BUTTON THAT CHANGES THE DISPLAY NEAR THE ODOMETER FROM "ODOMETER," "TRIP 1" MILES, AND "TRIP 2" MILES. WHEN I REACHED MY HAND BUMPED THE IGNITION SWITCH AND EVERYTHING IN THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF INCLUDING THE ENGINE, POWER STEERING, AND BRAKES. I HAD NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT ROLLED TO COMPLETE STOP DOWN THE ROAD WE WERE DRIVING ON. ONCE IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND EVERYTHING SEEMED ALRIGHT SO CONTINUED DRIVING, HAD IT LOOKED AT, AND WAS TOLD EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I BELIEVE THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH ISSUES AFFECT THE 2001 YUKON XL 2500 AND THAT IT SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO FURTHER. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC YUKON 2500. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING 4 DAYS IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE BRAKES AND POWER STEERING HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

GMC YUKON XL 2500, 8.1L ENGINE... PURCHASED TRUCK (2ND OWNER) 8/2005 FROM GMC DEALER. NOTICED FIRST OCCASION OF STALLING APP. 10/05 OR 11/05. DEALER SAID "COULDN'T REPRODUCE COMPLAINT" AND RELEASED THE VEHICLE. TRUCK DROVE OK FOR AWHILE AND BEGAN STALLING AGAIN, THIS TIME GM DEALER SAID "FUEL PUMP" ($900+). TRUCK CONTINUED TO STALL ON AND OFF FOR YEARS, EACH TIME NO ONE COULD FIND PROBLEM.. RECENTLY, SUMMER OF 09, IT HAS BECOME WORSE (MORE FREQUENT AND LONGER TIME TO RE-START) AND AFTER TWO INDEPENDENT DIAGNOSTIC TESTS BY TWO SEPARATE CERTIFIED MECHANICS, IT WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE CRANK POSITIONING SENSOR. I HAD ALREADY HEARD ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT SINCE MY VIN WASN'T INCLUDED IN THE RECALL (EVEN THOUGH ITS THE SAME YEAR, MODEL AND ENGINE) I AM BEING TOLD THAT THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT COVER!!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO.. I CANT DRIVE THIS VEHICLE ANY LONGER BECAUSE IT STALLS MUCH MORE OFTEN AND WITHOUT ANY WARNING MEANING LOSS OF POWER STEERING, ETC AND RISK OF CRASH. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 GMC YUKON XL 2500. THE CRANK CASE POSITION SENSOR SHUTS ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO STALL AND IT MAY NOT RESTART IMMEDIATELY. THE FAILURE IS RELATED TO NHTSA#07V521000 AND GM RECALL# 06083, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. A DIFFERENT AUTHORIZED DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND STATED THAT THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE REPAIR COST WAS $800 AND IF THE FAILURE AFFECTED THE TRANSMISSION ADDITIONAL FEES WOULD BE INCLUDED. A LOCAL MECHANIC REPAIRED THE TRANSMISSION AT FOR LESS THAN $800. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS FOR HER VIN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,315 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Vehicle Wide Programming (VWP) is a new process to update software on GM Vehicles. It provides the ability via a single selection within Techline Connect to first identify which modules need updating and then proceed to updating affected modules (with some exceptions). The updating of modules is completed in parallel instead of the technician needing to update one module at a time. This allows a more streamlined approach for dealers and customers.
POWER TRAIN
GM is receiving damaged (cracked or broken) transmission cores returned to the reman facilities. The damage is being caused either in the removal process by the technician, or inadequate packaging or shipping. This bulletin advises the dealers to be more careful not to damage the transmissions during removal and to package the core properly for return.

They are not recalls: repairs described in a bulletin are usually only free if the vehicle is still under warranty or the manufacturer has extended coverage.
