What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2020 GMC Yukon, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim
The contact owns a 2020 GMC Yukon. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked and the transmission malfunctioned, causing the wheels to lock up and the check engine warning light to illuminate. The vehicle was driven to a local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission clutch and pressure control solenoid had failed. The contact was advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V289000 (Power Train). The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 118,000.
Complete transmission failure at 82,000 miles. Well maintained vehicle, not used for towing or heavy hauling. Required complete replacement. Traveling at highway speeds and-according to repair facility- valve failure caused transmission to overheat a stripped gears, causing complete failure. Vehicle was unable to shift into any gears and was left inoperable. Required towing assistance and replacement.
Engine
Reports naming the engine itself — including stalling, misfires, oil consumption, cooling and internal engine components.
From owner reports, verbatim
I took my vehicle to a dealer to repair something unrelated to the engine. They said the oil pan was leaking and pulled the pan to discover the crank shaft bearings were failing. The vehicle has 53,765 miles at this point. This appears to be the same defect being recalled on the 2022 through 2024 models.
The 2020 Yukon started to have serious loss of speed and decelerating issue when the vehicle would slow down and down shift to a lower gear. The issue with this is that once it downshifted it woul not engage in a gear again and leave me stranded on the road. I had to turn off the car and restart it for it to reengage in a gear enough to get it moving again and sometimes I had to try more than once to get it moving once it no longer wanted to engage in a gear. So in the 10 mile drive, I was left stranded at least 15 times. Each time I had to restart and restart again for the vehicle to engage in a lower gear. Once moving, it would sometimes it would engage in a higher gear and sometimes it would not. Thank goodness I wasn't traveling on the highway when this happened. Beware to anyone if this was to happen on the highway while in the middle lane while in traffic. And the check engine light never turned on and thus no code to help detect the issue. Took it the day before to have it looked at and was told nothing was wrong with it since there was a code and they could not duplicate the issue I described. WHAT?? They reset some transmission computer setting but it only made it worse by the next day. Now this 6 yr on 2020 GM Yukon is at the dealership service department requiring a new transmission for $7200. Said that the transmission fluid was showing particles of stuff and color was 'burnt', I think. Transmission fluid was changed at it's regular check up time so that didn't cause the issue and nor should it have bits and pieces in it and discolored. Is there any recourse to GM and it's crappy transmissions??
Brakes
Reports naming service brakes, the antilock braking system, brake hoses, master cylinders or the parking brake.
From owner reports, verbatim
Issue with the trailer brake system keeps coming up on my dash. I know a lot of other people have had the same issue keeps dinging will not stop causes me to get distracted while driving. Unable to use other features because of this distraction and safety issue. The safety issue needs to be fixed this is an effective product with so many people having an issue you need to do a recall. I did let Graff Chevrolet in Mount Pleasant Michigan no and I took a picture and showed them.
I had an incident in my 2020 GMC Yukon, where the forward collision crash alert went off and there was total loss of brakes. The brake pedal went to the floor. After the crash alert ended, the brakes returned. This happened on the highway and could have turned into a disastrous event. The dealership has been unable to diagnose or recreate this issue. They claim they did not find anything and the vehicle is safe to drive. I have turned off the collision detection system in the meantime. I feel strongly that this is a software issue that needs addressed. GM has replied that they support the dealership but if I want a second opinion I can go to another dealership for input.

Seat belts
Reports naming seat belts, buckles, retractors and pretensioners.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE RENTED 2020 TAHOE WAS STATIONARY. A PASSENGER SITTING IN THE LEFT THIRD ROW SEAT BECAME STUCK IN THE SEAT BELT. SHE WAS UNABLE TO OPEN THE SEATBELT CLASP AS IT GOT STUCK AND FAILED TO UNLATCH. THE MORE THE PASSENGER STRUGGLED TO UNLATCH THE SEATBELT, THE PROGRESSIVELY TIGHTER IT BECAME. PASSENGER COULD NOT DISENGAGE THE SEATBELT CLASP BY PRESSING THE TINY RED BUTTON. THREE OTHER PASSENGERS TRIED TO RELEASE THE SEATBELT AND COULD NOT. PASSENGER WAS TRAPPED WITH TIGHT SEAT BELT HOLDING HER IN. OTHER PASSENGERS CALLED EMERGENCY PERSONNEL WHO ALSO COULD NOT RELEASE THE EVER TIGHTENING SEAT BELT. PASSENGER WAS RELEASED WHEN THE RANGER CUT THE SEAT BELT WITH A SEATBELT CUTTING EMERGENCY TOOL. IT WAS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS EXPERIENCE. LATER, SOME OF OUR GUESTS FIGURED OUT THAT YOU HAVE TO PRESS THE TINY RED BUTTON ON THE LEFT LATCH WITH A PIECE OF THE RIGHT BUCKLE. A PASSENGER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RELEASE THE SEATBELT BY DEPRESSING THE RED BUTTON. A PASSENGER CANNOT EVEN REACH THE BUTTON FROM THE SEATED POSITION AS THE BUTTON IS TINY AND CANNOT ACCOMMODATE AN ADULT FINGER TO DEPRESS IT. THIS IS THE WORST EXAMPLE OF ENGINEERING I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. I AM FRANKLY AMAZED THAT THIS DESIGN PASSED ANY SAFETY TESTS. PLEASE ADDRESS THE ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT OR KILLED BY BEING TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE AND UNABLE TO ESCAPE. *TR
