2002 Harley-Davidson Flhtcu-1 Shrine Problems

Owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA, grouped by component

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.

Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

ON 1-20-2006, I WAS OPERATING MY 2002 HARLEY DAVIDISON ULTRA CLASSIC, WHEN THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTDOWN. I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 50 MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE MOTORCYCLE ROLLED TO A STOP AND AFTER A FEW MOMENTS IT STARTED. ABOUT A 1/4 MILE UP THE ROAD IT HAPPENED AGAIN. I HAD BEEN USING THE BIKE FOR ABOUT 16 MILES / 25 MINUTES WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME. IN NOVEMBER 12, 2005, I TOOK THE MOTORCYCLE TO THE HARLEYDAVIDISON DEALERSHIP TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS PROBLEM HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PRIOR RECALL ON A CIRCUIT BREAKER. I WAS CHARGED $70.00 AND TOLD THEY FOUND A PINCHED WIRE. I ASKED ABOUT THE RECALL, AND THEY INFORMED ME, MY MOTORCYCLE HAD THE RECALL COMPLETED DURING A PRIOR MAINTENANCE. I BELIEVE THAT EITHER THE REPLACED CIRCUIT BREAKER IS ALSO BAD OR THERE IS A NEW PROBLEM THAT WILL CAUSE SOMEONE TO GET HURT. *NM

I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, TRADE AND CONSUMER PROTECTION, AND I BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE SENT YOU A COPY OF THAT COMPLAINT. ON JULY 6, 2007 WE WERE RIDING IN THE HILLS OF TENN. WHEN THE ENGINE OF MY 2002 HARLEY- DAVIDSON FLHTCUI FIRE FIGHTER EDITION WITH 36,000 MILES HAD A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE CAUSED BY CAM BEARING FAILURE. THE ENGINE IS JUNK AND NEEDS TO BE REMANUFACTURED. MY CONCERN IS THAT HARLEY HAS KNOWN THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE TWIN CAM ENGINE BEARINGS GOING OUT AND WILL NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT WHICH IS A $3,600.00 REPAIR. THE BIGGER CONCERN IS THAT WE WERE ONLY GOING 25-30 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND I HAD ALL TO DO TO KEEP FROM CRASHING. WHAT IF WE WERE ON THE INTERSTATE DOING 70 MILES PER HOUR. WHAT KIND OF FAITH AM I GOING TO NEED WHEN I GET THE ENGINE BACK AFTER REMANUFACTURED. *TR UPDATED 12/12/07

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
