Recalls, owner-reported complaints, investigations and safety data

Data refreshed

Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

The defect: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Road King (FLHR), Street Glide (FLHX), Street Glide Special (FLHXS), Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), Ultra Limited (FLHTK), Police Road King (FLHP), Police Electra Glide (FLHTP), CVO Ultra Limited (FLHTKSE), 2014 CVO Road King (FLHRSE), and 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low (FLHTCUL), Ultra Limited Low (FLHTKL), Road Glide (FLTRX), Road Glide Special (FLTRXS), CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE), and CVO Road Glide Ultra (FLTRUSE) motorcycles. The affected motorcycles have saddlebag mounting receptacles that may not adequately secure the saddlebags to the motorcycle.
The risk: If a saddlebag is not adequately secured, it may separate from the motorcycle while riding, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected saddlebag mounting receptacles with updated receptacles, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2015. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0166.

106,966 units potentially affected
The defect: Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Harley-Davidson) notified the agency on April 9, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic (FLHTCU), Electra Glide Ultra Classic - Twin Cooled (FLHTCU TC), Ultra Limited (FLHTK), Police Electra Glide (FLHTP), Street Glide (FLHX), Street Glide Special (FLHXS), CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE), 2015 Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low (FLHTCUL), Ultra Limited Low (FLHTKL), Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low - Twin Cooled (FLHTCUL TC), Road Glide Special (FLTRXS), Road Glide (FLTRX), and 2014 CVO Road King (FLHRSE) motorcycles. On July 31, 2015, Harley-Davidson expanded the recall to cover an additional 61,065 motorcycles. In the affected motorcycles, the clutch master cylinder may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch, especially if the motorcycle has been parked for an extended period of time.
The risk: When the engine is running and the motorcycle is in gear, if the clutch cannot be fully disengaged, the motorcycle may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
The remedy: Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will flush the clutch system and rebuild the clutch master cylinder, free of charge. The recall began April 23, 2015. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson's number for this recall is 0165.

DRIVING MY BIKE WHICH I PURCHASED NEW IN FEBRUARY 2015 AND CURRENTLY HAVE 18,000 MILES ON IT I LOST CONTROL OF SHIFTING GEARS. TURNS OUT TO BE THE SHIFTER SHAFT AND CONTROL LEVER WERE STRIPPED. THE GEARS WERE WORN DOWN SO BAD THAT THE SHIFTER WAS NOT ACTIVATING THE CHANGE OF GEARS. I WAS IN MILWAUKEE AND HAD TO LIMP THE BIKE OUT OF BUSY TRAFFIC TO DIAGNOISE THE PROBLEM. THEN I HAD TO DRIVE IN SECOND GEAR FOR OVER 8 MILES AT 25 MPH ON ROADS THAT WERE 45 MPH. VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND NOTHING I COULD DO. SIMPLE FIX, REPLACE SHAFT AND SHIFT LEVER. HD KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AND IN TALKING WITH MILWAUKEE HD SERVICE ADVISOR HE SAYS THEY HAVE PLENTY OF THE SHAFTS IN STOCK BECAUSE OF THIS VERY ISSUE. THE SHAFT IS FAULTY AND COULD HAVE BEEN A REAL PROBLEM FOR ME. I LOST ALL CONTROL OF SHIFTING. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE, WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. THIS NEEDS TO BE SERIOUSLY LOOKED AT! I KNOW I AM NOT THE FIRST, AND WILL NOT BE THE LAST. THE PARTS ARE CHEAP TO PURCHASE, BUT THE POINT IS SOMETHING THIS SERIOUS SHOULD NOT BE WEARING CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE BIKE. I HAVE OWNED NUMEROUS BIKES PRIOR TO THIS ONE, AND HAVE NEVER HAD THIS FAILURE UNTIL THIS MODEL YEAR. *TR

I PURCHASED A 2015 ULTRA CLASSIC LOW IN JUNE 2015 A GREAT MACHINE AND ABOUT 4500 MILES ON IT ALREADY BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT. WHEN I TAKE OFF FROM A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION OR TRAFFIC LIGHT THE ENGINE STUMBLES AND KNOCKS, SORT OF LIKE WHEN YOU TRY TO TAKE OFF IN 2ND GEAR. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO ADIRONDACK HARLEY-DAVIDSON 106 BELLEN RD, BROADALBIN, NY 12025 AND JOE'S MOTORCYCLE REPAIR, DYNO TUNING, DYNO PERFORMANCE, 124 N CENTRAL AVE, MECHANICVILLE, NY 12118 TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. I WAS TOLD BY BOTH PLACES THAT THE REASON THE MOTORCYCLE DOES THAT IS THAT THE FUEL PROGRAMMING IS SET TOO LEAN TO MEET HARLEY-DAVIDSON'S REQUIREMENT TO MEET GOVERNMENT EPA STANDARDS. I WAS TOLD BY BOTH, ADIRONDACK HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND JOE'S MOTORCYCLE REPAIR, THAT THEY CAN FIX THE PROBLEM BY INSTALLING HARLEY-DAVIDSON SCREAMING EAGLE PERFORMANCE PARTS: 1.FUEL TUNER 2. HIGH FLOW AIR CLEANER AND 3. FLOW THROUGH EXHAUST. IN ORDER TO DO THIS THEY WOULD REMOVE ALL OF THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON'S EPA REQUIRED ENVIRONMENTAL COMPONENTS, RE-TUNE THE ENGINE, IT WILL RUN PERFECT AND NO LONGER WILL THE ENGINE STUMBLES AND KNOCK LIKE WHEN YOU TRY TO TAKE OFF IN 2ND GEAR. ALL OF THIS FOR THE AROUND $2000.00 PLUS. I ALREADY PAID $25,000.00 FOR THIS MOTORCYCLE SO I DO NOT FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO PAY ANOTHER $2000.00 PLUS TO HAVE THE MOTORCYCLE TAKEN APART REASSEMBLED WITH PARTS THAT WILL VOID MY WARRANTY AND INVALIDATE THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MOTORCYCLE TO MEET GOVERNMENT EPA STANDARDS. SO WHERE DO I GO TO GET MY ULTRA RE-TUNED A LITTLE RICHER UNDER WARRANTY AT NO CHARGE, NOT VOIDING WARRANTY AND STILL MEETING GOVERNMENT EPA STANDARDS. THANKS, IN WHERE YOU ASK: WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN - MOST EVERY TIME I TAKE OFF FROM A STOP SPEED - 0-10 MPH DATE HAPPENED - NOT JUST ONE DATE FROM NEW, 14 JUNE 2015 AND STILL DOES IT TODAY. WAS THERE A CRASH - NOT YET JUST A MATTER OF TIME.
