Owner complaintsComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

Safety recallsA safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard. Recall repairs are free. Whether a specific vehicle is covered depends on its VIN — a recall listed for a model year does not necessarily apply to every vehicle of that year.

InvestigationsNHTSA opens an investigation to examine whether a safety defect may exist. An open investigation is not a determination that a defect exists, and many investigations close without a recall. Investigations can, however, lead to one.
0
Crash or fire reportedComplaints whose submitter recorded that a crash or a fire occurred. These are the reporter's own answers on the NHTSA form, not verified findings.

PURCHASED TWO GAS CAPS FOR 1986 FXSTC PART # 21-327 AND 21-328 FROM JIREH CYCLES AT 10 MAIN STREET, FESTUS, MO 63028 PHONE 877-6810448. THE GAS TANKS WERE ALSO PURCHASED FROM THIS COMPANY. WHEN I PUT THE GAS CAPS ON AND DROVE THE VEHICLE THE FUEL LEAKED OUT FROM THE TOP OF THE TANKS DOWN THE SIDES LIFTING THE TWO WEEK OLD PAINT OFF THE TANKS POURING ON TO THE HOT ENGINE AND HOT EXHAUST PIPES. I IMMEDIATLY CONTACTED THE BUISINESS I PURCHASED THE PARTS FROM AND WAS TOLD BY THEIR SALES MANAGER THAT ALL SHE (KRISTIE) COULD DO IS REPLACE THE GAS CAPS. WHEN I ASKED FOR THE NUMBER AND NAME TO THE MANUFACTURER SHE GAVE ME THE NUMBER TO THE DISTRIBUTOR A COMPANY CALLED MIDWEST MOTORCYCLES- 111 MANUFACTURER DR., ARNOLD, MO PHONE 800-325-3914. I ORIGINALLY SPOKE TO A REP ( WALTER STOCKMAN ) AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO HIM. HE TOLD ME HE WOULD GET BACK TO ME WITH THE NAME OF THE MANUFACTURER SO I COULD BE COMPENSATED FOR THE DAMAGE. HE WOULD NOT TAKE MY CALLS FOR THREE DAYS , I TOLD THE SECRETARY I WAS GOING TO CONTACT THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION IF I DID NOT HEAR BACK FROM HIM. HE CALLED THE NEXT DAY AND INSTRUCTED ME TO SEND THE PART BACK TO JIREH CYCLES AND HAVE THEM FORWARD IT TO HIM TO DETERMINE IF THE PART IS DEFECTIVE. HE REFUSES TO GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION ON THE MANUFACTURER, SO I CAN CONTACT THEM. THESE GAS CAPS CAN BE A DEFINATE FIRE BALL HAZARD NOT TO MENTION THE POTENTIAL OF PROPERTY DAMAGE.

Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers. Older model years have had longer for reports to accumulate.
