2001 Honda Accord Owner Complaints

Data refreshed

Complaints on fileComplaints are reports submitted to NHTSA by owners and drivers. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a complaint does not establish that a defect exists. Volume is influenced by how many of a vehicle were sold, how long it has been on the road, and how much attention an issue has received.

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Accord. The contact purchased the vehicle and was provided a copy of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V182000 (AIR BAGS) by the original owner of the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted; however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The dealer refused to release the vehicle because of a "Do not Drive" warning on the vehicle. The contact had to sign a release form to retrieve the vehicle. The contact stated that the dealer deactivated the front driver’s side air bag. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated and remained illuminated. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Dealer has falsely stated that past airbag recall work was completed. The timeframe they gave of completion is incorrect. We owned the car during the timeframe they said the repairs were done, but they were not done. We had a mechanic from Honda call use around the stated time (years ago, I cant recall specifically, dealer has the info), but the mechanic never came yet marked the work as completed. I asked the dealer and they ran a report and said wok was done. I'm basically driving a ticking time bomb.

The SRS light comes on and once cleared/reset it will typically return after 2-4 trips. it was confirmed when the car when air bags were checked for recalls. This first appeared in 2018 with airbag recalls. It became a recurring issue in 2021 when after each reset it would return. The reset would last months and when the battery was drained it might reappear. In 2024 Jan. the reset and light return cycle become more consistent with it returning within 2-4 trips.

The automatic transmission is failing. Yes it is available for inspection upon request. It is slipping and sometimes will accelerate extremely slow. Will also jolt forward aggressively at times. Making it dangerous and a safety issue. The transmission can go out soon and make the car stop moving. Putting me and everyone else at risk being stuck on the road.

I am able to turn the ignition to the off position and remove the key without putting the vehicle in park. While this has not resulted in an accident YET, the car did roll down my driveway once. Someone could die as a result of this problem. I believe the issue is with the ignition interlock. Both the dealer and an independent mechanic told me it was an expensive repair and “not worth doing on this car”. The thing is, there is a recall for this very issue on other 1999-2002 Honda Accord sedans, but the recall does not include my car’s VIN. This is a public safety threat that make me afraid to sell or donate my car. The problem has been ongoing for about 3 years. There are no warning lights associated with the problem, but a number of other electrical issues have been developing.

Have had the car in the shop multiple times in the last year attempting to solve a consistent radial pull. This has become a safety issue as the car is now being used by a 21 year old granddaughter. Discount Tire has consistently refused to help. The latest alignment was conducted by Advance Auto Tech of Angleton Texas which shows the alignment is not the problem. It is one of the tires now identified as the left rear. Alignment test was conducted on 07/01/2021. Consumer stated tires are 205/65 R15.

I AM WRITING TO YOU IN REGARDS TO A SAFETY CONCERN WITH MY 2001 HONDA ACCORD. THE ENGINE SUBFRAME OF MY 2001 HONDA ACCORD LX HAS 1/4 ENGINE CONNECTIONS ROTTED THROUGH. THIS IS LOCATED ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE NEAR THE STRUT ASSEMBLY, BENEATH THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN, AS NOTED BY OTHERS ON POSTING ON THE INTERNET. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS RUSTED. THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION OTHERWISE, ESPECIALLY WITH VERY LOW MILES (156,000) THERE IS VERY LITTLE RUST ON THE VEHICLE CONSIDERING IT'S AGE. MY MECHANIC SAYS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. HE WRITES: 'DURING DEGREASING (AND REPAIR OF RADIATOR) FOUND ENGINE SUB-FRAME RUSTING OUT AND COMING APART. ADVISED CLIENT THE VEHICLE IS A SAFETY RISK TO DRIVE IN THIS CONDITION'. IT APPEARS TO BE THE RESULT OF A DESIGN FLAW RELATING TO THE LOCATION OF THE AIR CONDITIONER DRAIN. HONDA SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS DESIGN FLAW AND HONDA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO REPAIR THIS UNSAFE SITUATION. I AM SHOCKED THIS CATASTROPHIC SAFETY CONDITION WAS ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITHOUT WARNING BY HONDA AND/OR THE NHTSA!!

HONDA ACCORD 2001 4-DR SAB: PASSENGER SIDE REAR FRONT ENGINE SUPPORT COMPLETELY RUSTED AWAY DUE TO AC LEAK. DRIVER SIDE REAR FRONT SUBFRAME IS COMPLETELY FINE, NO RUST. MECHANIC SAID CAR IS TOO DANGEROUS TO DRIVE UNLESS I INVEST IN NEW SUBFRAME FOR OVER $1,200. MY CAR ONLY HAS 70,000 MILES ON IT AND I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED IT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED FOR CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE AC LEAKAGE. I HAVE FOUND MANY FORUMS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM INCLUDING THE ARTICLE 'CENTER FOR AUTO SAFETY REQUESTING RECALL OF 1.5 MILLION HONDA ACCORDS FOR RUST ISSUE IN SUB- FRAME AND HONDA ACCORDS FOUND WITH SUB-FRAMES RUSTED OUT BY THE NHOU. I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED DRIVING THIS CAR WHILE I WORKED AS A FOOD DELIVERY DRIVER FOR GRUBHUB. I DESERVE COMPENSATION, MY PASSENGER SUBFRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT AND HANGING BY A THREAD WHEREAS MY DRIVER SIDE SUBFRAME IS COMPLETELY FINE. THAT DOESN'T JUST HAPPEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED.
