What this page shows
Everything below is an owner-reported complaint submitted to NHTSA about the 2005 Honda Accord, grouped by the component NHTSA recorded on the report. These are not confirmed defects, and they are not recalls. NHTSA does not verify most reports before publishing them, and a category with more reports in it is not evidence that a part is defective.
Complaints are reports submitted by owners and drivers to NHTSA. They are not verified and do not establish that a defect exists.

Each component in detail
What the reports in each category say, in the owners' own words
Airbags
Reports naming the air-bag system — deployment behaviour, inflators, sensors and warning lights.
From owner reports, verbatim
Front air bag indicator light stays on while driving. Was replaced twice. And the problem is still going on. It's been four years since it's been replaced.
The contact owns a 2005 Honda Accord. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V320000 (Air Bags); however, the dealer refused to complete the recall and had not provided a reason for declining the recall repair. The contact stated that the dealer and manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Electrical
Reports naming the electrical system — wiring, battery, charging, control modules, infotainment and electrical accessories.
From owner reports, verbatim
Since I have owned this vehicle (bought used with 68,000 miles) it has had an issue that over 10 mechanics have not yet solved. It has slowly escalated to the point it is now unable to be driven at 250,000 miles. It is an idle issue, the car started revving up to around 3,000 rpm’s (on hot days it seemed but it also started to happen in the winter ) whenever I would put the car into park after driving it a small amount of time. The safety mechanism would kick in on the vehicle making it impossible to put back into gear and I would be forced to shut the car off and let it rest for around 30 minutes before it would start without immediately revving up to the red line again. I’ve replaced everything that every mechanic has told me that it could be. Even tried to replace almost everything all at once. Over time this issue began to get extremely worse and the vehicle would start to accelerate on its own to the point I almost crashed it three different times because I would be unable to slow the vehicle down coming to a stop sign and I’d have to throw the e brake on while pressing the main brake system. Afterwards I’d have to quickly find a parking spot and shut the car off due to the damage I felt like the engine was taking. Then it seemed like possibly an electrical issue because the power would drain overnight and the car wouldn’t start without a jump even after replacing the starter, alternator, battery, etc. I’ll end by saying now when I can get the car started, the last time that I drove it, it had the same issue of accelerating on its own and the rpm’s increasing to around 2,500 or 3,000 or even more at times and felt as if the automatic transmission was missing or slipping gears and the car would almost stall out and shake violently as if you were driving a manual transmission and it was the moment right before you killed the engine. The last time I drove it I had to pull over at a gas station and call someone to come pick me up and pull the car home.
I was driving in Kansas City Kansas. On 635, It was around 6 pm. When I started exiting onto another highway. Due to car stalling by either transmission slipping, or the fuel pump stalling the engine headlights too dim with weird angle in lighting as well, Long story short.... I was almost the cause of a massive wreck ... it made for a quiet drive home... So I was also going to see if they've had a recall on 2005 honda accord aside from airbags.
Powertrain (other)
Powertrain reports that are not specifically the engine or transmission — driveshafts, axles, transfer cases and differentials.
From owner reports, verbatim

The contact owns a 2005 Honda Accord. The contact stated while entering a parking lot the vehicle accelerated on its own. The contact stated he noticed several unknown warning lights illuminated. The contact desperately pressed on the brake pedal, but the vehicle continued to accelerate. The front driver-side air bag deployed without any warning obstructive the contact's view and causing him to crash into a building and causing the other air bags in the vehicle to deploy. The contact's daughter stuffed minor injuries but did not seek medical attention. The front end of the vehicle was damaged. The vehicle was not towed, but the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. A police report was not filed. The dealer was contacted but the dealer stated that there were no open recalls under the VIN. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 315,986.
Driver assistance
Reports naming forward-collision avoidance, lane keeping, back-over prevention, cruise control and related electronic driver-assistance systems.
From owner reports, verbatim

AFRAID CAR MIGHT KILL ME! Hello, I have reported this issue before but am getting zero help. My car has a problem where it is burning through the oil, I've had numerous mechanics try to figure out what is causing it but, nothing. I would get an oil change today and before the month is out, I would have to continue checking and putting oil in the car because it would be completely dry. No leaks ever detected... I've change the oil to full synthetic and still have the problem. The vehicle continuously losses power when driving uphill, My check engine light stays on and the light in the glove compartment does not go off while driving. I'm worried my engine will blow up if the problem persist. I am the original and only owner of this vehicle. There is also a problem with the suspension or axel, when I push hard on the brakes, the car makes a noise like the bottom fell out and is dragging metal on the floor. Mechanic also cannot figure that out, I've paid over 6k in diagnosis, repairs and time trying to get help and nothing. I would like to get my honda checked and fixed. I Anxiously await a response and solution to this car. I have Covid and this is my only source of transportation.

The contact stated while driving 35 MPH and attempting to pass a vehicle on the right lane of the road, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and pulled to the left side of the road and towards the median. The contact did not recall whether a warning light was illuminated. The vehicle crashed into the pole of a traffic sign, and the traffic sign broke the windshield. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belts pretensioners failed to engage, causing the contact to hit her head against the windshield. The shattered pieces of the windshield were propelled to the contact. The contact stated that she was unconscious for an hour. The contact was transported to the hospital by emergency unit. The contact sustained severe headaches and was advised to follow up with a neurologist. Additionally, the contact sustained minor lacerations on the legs and arms. A police report was filed. Fuel system
Reports naming fuel storage or delivery — tanks, pumps, lines, injectors and fuel leaks.
From owner reports, verbatim
Occasionally when coming to a full stop the engine will sudden rev and try to pull the car forward. Remaining on the brake will hold the car, slowly lifting the brake will allow the car to move forward a short distance and revving will cease.
I was driving in Kansas City Kansas. On 635, It was around 6 pm. When I started exiting onto another highway. Due to car stalling by either transmission slipping, or the fuel pump stalling the engine headlights too dim with weird angle in lighting as well, Long story short.... Visibility
Reports naming windshields, glass, wipers, defrosters and mirrors.
From owner reports, verbatim
WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR WHEN THE ROOF LINEAR FABRIC CAME OUT BLOCKING HER VISIBILITY FROM THE REAR. SHE COULD NOT SEE DRIVING IN THE FAST LANE AND WITH THE BABY IN THE BACK SHE PANICKED AND PULLED OVER. HALF OF THE ROOF LINEAR CAME DOWN BLOCKING VISIBILITY TO THE REAR AND TO THE SIDES.
WIPERS AND WIPER WASHER STOPPED WORKING; NO BLOWN FUSES INVOLVED; KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM NOT WORKING; REMOTE CONTROL IS NOW OPENING JUST THE TRUNK BUT NOTHING ELSE; RADIO BACKLIGHT NOT WORKING & POWER STEERING GETS HARD IN COLD WEATHER OR AFTER DRIVING ON STREETS OR ROADS WITH LITTLE MANEUVER. EVEN AFTER PUMP REPLACEMENT.
Interior & seats
Reports naming seats, latches, locks, linkages and interior fittings.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE BACK SEAT DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A FLAT STURDY SURFACE FOR AN INFANT CAR SEAT. I HAVE PULLED AS TIGHT AS I CAN ON THE SEAT BELT AND LATCHES AND FIND THAT NEITHER OFFERS A SECURE 1" STANDARD OF PLAY. THE SEATS TIP WHEN I TURN A CORNER WITH MY GRANDCHILD IN IT. IT IS UNSTURDY. I HAVE TRIED HEAVY AND LIGHT SEATS AND THEY STILL TIP. I HAVE TO STUFF TOWELS UNDERNEATH TO TRY TO BALANCE, BUT OF COURSE A TOWEL IN AN ACCIDENT WILL NOT PROTECT IN AN ACCIDENT. BY LAW I MUST USE A BACK SEAT AND NOT A FRONT SEAT. IS THERE A FLATTER MORE STABLE BACK SEAT?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ACCORD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE DRIVER EXITED THE PARKED VEHICLE, IT LOCKED ITSELF INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS UNLOCKED AT THE SERVICE OF A LOCKSMITH HOWEVER, THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR DID NOT UNLOCK. THE CONTACT CALLED THE FISHER HONDA ACURA DEALER (303-245-6416, LOCATED AT 6025 ARAPAHOE RD, BOULDER, CO 80303) AND WAS ADVISED TO TOW THE VEHICLE TO THE AUTO CENTER. THE VEHICLE WAS INSTEAD TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE ONLY REMEDY WAS TO BREAK THE FRONT DRIVER'S DOOR PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 135,000.
Exterior lighting
Reports naming headlights, tail lights, turn signals and other exterior lighting.
From owner reports, verbatim
THE CLUSTER LIGHTS AND THE DOME LIGHT WILL GET DIM. THE DOME LIGHT DOES WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOORS. THE CLUSTER LIGHTS WILL WHILE THE HEAD LIGHTS ARE ON. THE LIGHTS ON THE RADIO DO THE SAME. THE RADIO WILL MAKE A LOUD NOISE AND STOP PLAYING UNTIL YOU TURN OFF AND TURN BACK ON.THE WIRING TO BACK SPEAKERS IS PUT IN WRONG DONT WORK AT ALL. THE SEAT BELTS WILL LOCK WHEN TRYING TO PULL THEM AND IT DONT MATTER IF ITS IN MOTION OR STATIONARY.
HEADLIGHTS HAVE TOP LAYER COMING OFF THE FINISH. THE HEADLIGHT THEN TURNS YELLOW AND THE CLEAR LENS BECOMES CLOUDY. THIS GREATLY REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT ON THE ROAD WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. THIS CAUSES INCREASED DANGER OF A CAR HITTING AN ANIMAL OR PEDESTRIAN WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT. AFTERMARKET LENS CLEANING KITS ONLY OFFER A TEMPORARY FIX. THE ONLY TRUE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE HEADLIGHTS, AT A COST OF ALMOST $1000. THE HEADLIGHTS ARE A SAFETY DEVISE THAT SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE CAR, JUST LIKE A SEAT BELT OR AIR BAG. THIS HEADLIGHT PROBLEM CAN BE FOUND ON EVERY CAR MANUFACTURE, NOT JUST HONDA. CLOUDY HEADLIGHTS SHOULD BE REPLACED AT NO COST.
Tires & wheels
Reports naming tires, wheels, hubs, or the tire-pressure monitoring system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ACCORD EQUIPPED WITH AFTERMARKET SUMITOMO FALKEN TIRES, SIZE: 205/60/R16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE TIRE. THE FAILURE DAMAGED THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLAMP ASSEMBLY AND WHEEL WELL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TIRE SHOP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE TIRE; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE STILL HAD THREE OF THE SAME SUMITOMO TIRES. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 287,769. *LN*JB
DRIVNG ON THE FREEWAY AT FREEWAY SPEED WHEN MY FRONT DRIVERS SIDE TIRE SPONTANEOUSLY SEPERATED AND CAME APART CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL VEHILE DAMAGE. I HAVE DETAILED PHOTOS OF TIRE AND AUTO DAMAGE.
Other / unspecified
Reports whose component NHTSA recorded as unknown, or that do not map to one of the categories above.
From owner reports, verbatim
DRIVER SIDE FRONT AND REAR WHEEL WERE STOLEN WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE THE APARTMENT COMMUNITY.
AS I WAS COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, PARKING, THE CAR SPED UP INVOLUNTARILY. I KEPT PRESSING ON THE BRAKES, BUT IT DID NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE UNTIL THE CAR WAS STOPPED BY HITTING A BUILDING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALER INSPECTED THE BRAKES WHILE THE CAR WAS AT THE BODY SHOP, AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED, AND I CONTINUED DRIVING IT. THE INVOLUNTARY ACCELERATION OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES AGAIN, BUT I DID NOT THINK ANYTHING OF IT BECAUSE I WAS NOT COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, AND IT ADJUSTED ITS SPEED AGAIN. UNTIL...I HAD ANOTHER ACCIDENT EIGHT YEARS LATER DUE TO NONE OTHER THAN INVOLUNTARY ACCELERATION. SEE A SEPARATE COMPLAINT.
Suspension
Reports naming suspension components — springs, struts, shocks, control arms and related hardware.
From owner reports, verbatim
Axle shaft assembly broke right side, removed and Replaced. Control Arm Removed and Replaced. Ball Joint Lower Right Side. Service Wheel Alignment. Replaced Tire. Control Arm Upper Right Side Removed and Replaced. Tow Truck Order.
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THROUGH SOMEONES YARD AND ITS LIKE MY VEHICLE MADE A GRINDING SOUND AND A MALFUNCTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED AN EXCLAMATION POINT IN A TRIANGLE. I ALMOST GOT STUCK AND I WAS HORRIFIED AT THE SOUND. LATER ON I STARTED NOTICING IT WAS HARDER TO CONTROL THW VEHICLE AT HIGHER SPEEDS ON THE ROAD. ESPECIALLY AFTER IT RAINED I WOULD LEAVE MY YARD AND WOULD ALMOST BE TRAPPED IN MY YARD. VERY EERIE GRINDING SOUND WITH 3 MALFUNCTION LIGHTS ON: ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKE LAMP ILLUMINATED.
Heating & air conditioning
Reports naming the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system.
From owner reports, verbatim
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ACCORD. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY SHUT OFF AND THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE BATTERY. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE MORE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AGAIN AND THE ALTERNATOR WAS REPLACED; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO RESOLUTION TO THE MALFUNCTION. RECENTLY, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE AIR CONDITION SYSTEM COMPONENT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THERE HAD BEEN NO FURTHER OCCURRENCES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34,300. UPDATED 10/14/08 *BF UPDATED 10/23/08. *JB
WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF A HEAT WAVE, THE AIR CONDITIONING IN MY 2005 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID HAD STOPPED BLOWING COLD AIR. I HAD ONLY HAD MY CAR FOR THREE MONTHS, SO I WAS CONFUSED AT WHY MY AIR CONDITIONING HAD GONE OUT. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME THAT A ROCK HAD HIT AND DAMAGED THE AC CONDENSER, CAUSING THE FREON GAS TO LEAK FROM THE CONDENSER. HE SAID THAT THE CONDENSER IS LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE RADIATOR AND BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION IS WILL ALWAYS BE EXPOSED TO DEBRIS WHILE DRIVING. THE CONDENSER CAN BE SEEN THROUGH THE LARGE HOLES OF THE VENT AT THE FRONT OF THE CAR. THE MECHANIC GAVE ME A $750 ESTIMATE FOR THE PART AND LABOR. SINCE THE CAR IS A NEWER MODEL, THERE ARE NOT OLD PARTS AVAILABLE. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS NOT DESIGNED TO PROTECT THE CONDENSER, THAT IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THE PART WILL BE DAMAGED AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS PART IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY $750 EVERY TIME THIS OCCURS. *TR
Too few reports in this category for a page of its own — they appear in the full complaint list.
Higher-selling and older vehicles accumulate more reports. Counts are not failure rates and are not directly comparable between vehicles that sold in very different numbers.
